POPSBushie the Moonie It seems the Bush family just can't seem to help throwing its support and dollars at the so called Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Yes, the daddy of the Moonies is in cahoots with the daddy of the Bushies, and has been for years. For anyone who is not sure why this should be an issue, just do a bit of reading about Moon and his ruinous cult.

POPSMcCain Totally Trashes George Bush!
This, just 11 days before the election, is astounding. IMO, and many others think that if McCain had talked like this -- and focuses his criticism on Barack Obama's lack of military experience and thus a poor choice for the president's role as Commander-in-Chief -- he could have won. His list of criticism and emphatically also the list of many Democrats criticisms (except the war) and also spelled out a list of many Republican dissatisfactions about Bush (esp. big government, spending too much money). It also shows off his real 'maverick' streak.which has a lot of appeal to Independents (one-third the electorate). Yup...appeal to Democrats by echoing some of their gripes, appeal to Republican gripes, appeal to Independents, point to himself as better Commander-in-Chief -- it was a path to victory. But no...he made ridiculous smears to link Obama to terrorist; he made empty accusations of voter fraud, he talked 'Joe the Plumber," he picked Palin for VP -- it was like a c

POPSPlanning Sustainable Communities I remember being 17 and registering for college, wanting to study anthropology. The guidance counselor says to me, "You just want to jump right in, don't you!?!" My mistake; I thought college was about learning who you were and how you could best make a difference in the world. I had a fascination with drawing communites like this as a teen, not knowing what I was doing... if only I had known this was a vocation...:sigh:

POPSA Mobile Sea Barrier To Save Sinking Venice The project is building 78 floodgates at the 3 inlets that link the Venice lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. When the giant doors are at rest, they will be lying on the bottom of the inlet channel, invisible to the world. Each gate will be up to 92 feet long, 65 feet wide, and will weigh 300 tons. The gates allow one inlet to close and not the other so you are not obliged to close the whole lagoon. Some 37 percent of the work has been completed, and MOSE should open as planned in 2012.

POPS Tipping Point For Global Warming Movement
HOLLYWOOD TARGETS CHILDREN WITH CLIMATE FEARS In addition to Gore's entry last year into Hollywood fictional disaster films, other celebrity figures have attempted to jump into the game. Hollywood activist Leonardo DiCaprio decided to toss objective scientific truth out the window in his new scarefest "The 11th Hour." DiCaprio refused to interview any scientists who disagreed with his dire vision of the future of the Earth. In fact, his film reportedly features physicist Stephen Hawking making the unchallenged assertion that "the worst-case scenario is that Earth would become like its sister planet, Venus, with a temperature of 250 centigrade." I guess these "worst-case scenario's" pass for science in Hollywood these days. It also fits perfectly with DiCaprio's stated purpose of the film. DiCaprio said on May 20th of this year: "I want the public to be very scared by what they see. I want them to see a very bleak future." (LINK) "DiCaprio's Eco Movie Bombs"

POPSDept. of Defense Releases new War Strategy Manual Anyway, I learned today that more than 250,000 people have downloaded the manual in three weeks. Those are New York Times bestselling numbers. And it says something about how much people are looking at this manual. Some authors toil for years for such numbers. So the military is considering publishing the manual and selling it in bookstores, just as it did for 3-0. If you want to check it out, See above link and scroll down to last sentence.

POPSExploding comet draws attention The comet has grown larger than Jupiter, and can now be seen with the naked eye in the constellation Perseus. It is said to be, like the shoemaker levy collision with Jupiter, a once in a lifetime event. I'don't know how far away it is, but I'll paste to a link in comments with more technical details, (and a better picture) in comments.

POPSThe house that shaped an architectural generation Since this small house came into being, the idea of deconstructing traditional elements and reassembling them according to obscure and abstract comments has become the norm in the industry, particularly for major public buildings. There is considerable controversy surrounding his work and the current state of Deconstructivism, though the influence of Gehry’s approach to design is unquestionably felt throughout the practice of global architecture today.

POPSHOW TO - Build your own wind turbine Kagetsuki sent in this how-to on building a model vertical wind generator using household items, wire and magnets - " These plans are for the construction of a machine called a Savonius wind turbine. Wind turbines come in two general types, those whose main turning shaft is horizontal and points into the wind, and those with a vertical shaft that points up. The Savonius is an example of the vertical axis type. It consists of two simple scoops that catch the wind and cause the shaft to turn."

POPSGov. Sarah Palin was for "Bridge to Nowhere" In fact, the Palin administration has spent "tens of millions of dollars" in federal funds to start building a road on Gravina Island that is supposed to link up to the yet-to-be-built bridge, Weinstein said. Republican Mike Elerding also told McClatchy Newspapers, “he would have a hard time voting for the McCain ticket because of Palin's subsequent neglect of Ketchikan and her flip-flop on the "Ralph Bartholomew Veterans Memorial Bridge." Yet another outing of Liepublicans.

POPSThat Strange Falling Sensation Scientists and researchers continue to study sleep twitching and jerking in a small capacity, but state that the sensation is completely normal for our bodies and is “of little medical significance”. Our bodies go through several procedures of shutting down and preparing for an extended period of rest. “Hypnic jerking” is just one of them. It doesn’t appear to cause damage to body and poses no danger to our physical wellbeing. That may be true, but it could pose a significant danger to my bed when I mess my pants next time I wake up thinking I just fell off of a building.

POPSFound ! 'Missing link' brown dwarf Scientists have often wondered how big a gas cloud had to be, before the collapse due to it's own gravity would turn it from a large planet into a small star. They have found gas giants, and brown dwarfs either side, but this is the closest to the line. There will probably be a few 'missing links', because beside the mass, the flash point could depend on what the clouds are made of. Scientists always love it when they find something that needs a new category.

POPSEmpire State Building Lightning strikes
Saw a clip on Empire State Building Lightning strikes by ericw, and followed the link suggested by wiccantexan. I wondered, whether with the energy consumption of New York, and the tendency of of the Empire State Building to act as a lightning rod, can this electricity be stored or redirected to the power grid, rather that just being earthed. Seems like we'd just have to introduce it to a detour, and consolidate it with an insulating channel that could be created with a computer generated polymer, and a variable resistor that would respond to current fluctuations, and distribute the charge using a cascade effect so the current has multiple potential pathways. We need to split the charge as it strikes, and allow sequential switching to multiple lines as each becomes saturated. It's just that first short sharp shock. The best way to reduce an impact's effect is to spread it over a greater relative area Lightning seems like the sort of elementary force that we just have to redirect.

POPSDollhouse from recycled cardboard boxes at A Little Hut Patricia of A Little Hut has some great ideas for recycling/repurposing things into new, useable items. I love this idea of building a dollhouse out of cardboard boxes. It's a great parent/child project, and can be modified to meet a child's specific interests. Why not a castle, a fire house, a car? Once the project is complete, it's easy to continue the theme by using recycled carpet remnants for the floors, wallpaper for the walls, even magazine cut-outs for art, or to make paper doll people. I'll be interested in the follow-up photos to see where she goes with it. Link
