prohibiting slavery in territories north of Arkansas and substituted popular sovereignty -- territory residents could vote slavery up or down. We cannot say with assurance that the Kansas-Nebraska Act was unpopular -- Dr. Gallup didn't start polling until 81 years later. But the results of the next election were pretty convincing. The Republican Party was suddenly created to oppose the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the 1854-55 elections transformed the Democrats' 159-71 majority to a 108-83 Republican margin. Democrats didn't win a majority of House seats for the next 20 years. Nor did the Kansas-Nebraska Act settle the issue it addressed. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers fought it out in "bleeding Kansas," and Douglas felt obliged to break with the Democratic administration and disown election-stealing by the pro-slavery side. The issue roused a former congressman named Abraham Lincoln to re-enter politics, and he beat Douglas in the popular vote (but not in the legislature)

POPSWhat Obama Might Look Like If He Read Polls And Michael Barone's Column He had already realized that his sentiments were leading him away from the Whigs and toward the new Republican party, and in 1856 he became a Republican. He quickly came to the fore in the party as a moderate opponent of slavery who could win both the abolitionists and the conservative free-staters, and at the Republican national convention of 1856 he was prominent as a possible vice presidential candidate. Two years later he was nominated by the Republican party to oppose Douglas in the Illinois senatorial race. Accepting the nomination (in a speech delivered at Springfield on June 16), Lincoln gave a ringing declaration in support of the Union: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The campaign that followed was impressive. Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of debates (seven were held), in which he delivered masterful addresses for the Union and for the democratic idea. He was not an abolitionist, but he regarded slavery as an injustice and an evil .....

We must continue to push for "Medicare Part E - Everybody" - so we can rebuild the social safety net to encourage entrepreneurialism - and along those lines let's fix the bankruptcy bill, and strengthen social security. Finally, we need to think of work differently. Lincoln once said that labor is superior to capital because it precedes it. Nobody gets rich until somebody makes something. We once had an economy that valued laborers - the true producers of wealth - and the middle class. You know. almost everything on this gift list was, in their day, enthusiastically endorsed by Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. And Barry Goldwater. And Richard Nixon. Somehow this country went insane in 1981 when Reagan took power and declared that "greed was good" and America was to be reinvented."

POPSThe party of "government" is the end game. Wise up! Will losing the health care battle keep the "Government Party" from growing in strength and power over the electorate? No. Until we vote all of the power-mongers out we will not have a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

The ocean of fratricidal blood in the war following Lincoln's election would be the worst thing to happen in America's history. For decades after the Civil War, cripples and amputees roamed city streets. The wounds would take a century to heal. Still, in 1859, Americans gave thanks. In 1934, seventy-five years ago, our nation was firmly in the thrall of the Great Depression. The unemployment rate was near the highest level in American history, about twenty-five percent, and the patent medicine of FDR's Neal Deal was making things worse. Our government dropped the gold standard and piled up federal debt at an alarming rate. Hitler was consolidating his wicked power in Germany. Holomodor, the mass extermination by deliberate starvation of perhaps ten million Ukrainian men, women, and children, showed the depths of Stalinist evil and danger. Japan had annexed Manchukuo and was obviously scheming to grab more of China. Sober and caring Americans might well have asked in 1934: How, by

After all, the writ of habeas corpus is not the right itself but merely the ability to issue orders demanding the right's enforcement. It is important to note the political environment of the decision. Post-war, under a Republican Congress, the Court was reluctant to hand down any decision that questioned the legitimacy of military courts. The President's ability to suspend habeas corpus independently of Congress, a central issue, was not addressed probably because it was moot with respect to the case at hand. Though President Lincoln suspended the writ nationwide on September 24, 1862, Congress ratified almost six months later, on March 3, 1863. Milligan was detained in 1864, well after Congress formally suspended the writ. That notwithstanding, military jurisdiction had been limited.

President Steve Raab described the fact that Lincoln took the time to write the letter even as he dealt with the impending Civil War as ‘touching.’ According to Vice President Nathan Raab, it is the only known surviving Lincoln letter written to a child. A number of events have been held across the U.S. this year to mark the bicentenary of the former president’s birth.

This is how an emergency bailout program morphs into a White House's "walking around" money. Senator Thune has tried several variations on the end-TARP theme, and with each attempt has picked up Democratic support. When he offers this new proposal "perhaps as part of must-pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling to an eye-popping $13 trillion "taxpayers will be watching "deficit-hawk" Senators, from Alaska's Mark Begich to Arkansas's Blanche Lincoln to Nebraska's Ben Nelson. For Democrats who claim to care about runaway spending, no vote could be easier. TARP has served its purpose, and then some. End it.

President Roosevelt ordered them tried by military commission, but the detainees filed a petition of habeus corpus to challenge their military detention using the Fifth and Sixth Amendments. Could the president arrest and detain such persons in the United States without involving the judiciary? Unanimously, the Supreme Court ruled that he could. Saboteurs without uniforms were "enemy combatants" and therefore subject to military jurisdiction. Even Haupt, the U.S. citizen, could be so held. The Supreme Court stated: "Citizens who ... enter this country bent on hostile acts are enemy belligerents within the meaning of the Hague Convention ..." Thus, as far back as 1942, the Supreme Court clearly described the legal status of enemy combatants. No President -- not Lincoln, not Wilson, not Roosevelt, not Kennedy -- no President has
