POPSDream Views-Learning Lucid Dreaming I have had episodes of 'Lucid Dreaming' Where the dream is a state where there is the awareness that the experience is a dream. When it happened there was the awareness of both a relative ability to control actions, plus the 'knowledge' that being a dream, there was no danger of, for example 'falling off a cliff'. Knowing it is a dream, means Gravity has no hold, and the imagination can experience the dream equivalent of 'flying' While I have had the memory of the dreams, I did not consider it to be something that could be induced, rather I thought it was just a natural dream variation. This site gives some details on how it can be induced, with associated information on some clinical aspects of dreaming, and sleep. Somewhere I heard that one of the major factors that can dictate the nature of some dreams, is the thinking just before falling asleep. Particularly the last thought.

POPSChanging minds and persuasion How we change what others think, believe, feel,do. One of the most notable features of social manipulation, is that it is most successful when it goes unnoticed. When learning the principles, it can show us what to look for, and identify examples.Insight can also be gained regarding social interaction, and how we can interact in similar ways for similar reasons, which can form a link, and clarify our understanding of each other.

POPSFederal abortion ban endangers women's health Editorial by Cassing Hammond, an ob-gyn at the Northwestern University School of Medicine. Some of my patients, after finally becoming pregnant, learn that they need an organ transplant or that they are suffering from heart disease so severe that continuing the pregnancy would not only jeopardize their current health but might worsen the underlying heart condition. Others have had brain tumors, ruptured brain aneurysms, strokes and many different types of cancer. These patients terminate their pregnancies to avoid risk to their health and to begin lifesaving therapy for themselves, often in hopes of one day becoming healthy enough to have a baby under safer circumstances. If the Supreme Court allows the federal abortion ban to go into effect, it will jeopardize my ability to provide the safest health care to women confronting these severely troubled pregnancies. POPSBabies' brains are more sophisticated One reaction to this research has been to say that all that knowledge must be built into our genes and that, therefore, experience and learning play only a small part. But studies show that this is not the case. Far from being irrational and illogical, in some ways children are brighter than adults. Even the youngest children turn out to have remarkably sophisticated and powerful learning abilities.

POPSYou Bet Your Tintype, Buckaroo Mr. Kendrick belongs to a growing group of commercial and art photographers who have retreated in recent years from the ease and exactitude of the digital age and taken up the difficult, ethereal techniques of early photography, including the ambrotype (in which a unique image is created on a glass plate), daguerreotype (on polished silver) and tintype (usually on tin-plated iron ). The pictures — made by exposing and developing the metal plates after they have been coated with a light-sensitive solution of silver nitrate — are a kind of ideal meeting of subject and style. Mr. Kendrick, like most cowboys, is much happier when doing things the hard way.“Making these kinds of pictures, you don’t need the mental skills that you have to have a Ph.D. for,” he said. “It’s more like learning to be a carpenter. It’s work and it’s satisfying. What you get is unique, not mass-produced. You can’t repeat the process. So it’s the antithesis of digital.”

POPSConsciousness Is Not a Thing Review of 'Operational Consciousness'. Noble, H.(2005) by clipper Pat Parslow. Pat's stuff has introduced me to some specific research and theory on consciousness, AI, learning, symbolic representation etc. I guess he is an academic, I'm not. But I rely on academics to do the spade work (wahey!), Also, specifically, it seems to me there is amazing opportunity for this relatively specialised stuff to crosscut fields relating to cognitive and evolutionary psychology, semiotics and my own major interest at the moment - the place of brain mapping of visceral body states as the function of conscious feeling in an undifferentiated 'mind'body-other' continuum. I should add that it also has direct relevance to teaching and learning, is pragmatically textured.
