do who I say, not what I do
fudomyoo
by fudomyoo  12-30-2009
in closing: "I've long thought that the solution to the cheap, cost-free moralizing that leads very upstanding people like Karl Rove to want to ban same-sex marriages (which they don't want to enter into themselves, and thus cost them nothing) is to have those same "principles" apply consistently to all marriage laws. If Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and their friends and followers actually were required by law to stay married to their wives -- the way that "traditional marriage" was generally supposed to work -- the movement to have our secular laws conform to "traditional marriage" principles would almost certainly die a quick, quiet and well-deserved death." http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/2010-California-Protection-of-Marriage-Act/

Why Does Interpol Need Immunity from American Law?
merrie
by merrie  12-28-2009    2
Being constrained by the Fourth Amendment, FOIA, and other limitations of the Constitution and federal law that protect the liberty and privacy of Americans is what prevents law-enforcement and its controlling government authority from becoming tyrannical. On Wednesday, however, for no apparent reason, President Obama issued an executive order removing the Reagan limitations. That is, Interpol's property and assets are no longer subject to search and confiscation, and its archives are now considered inviolable. This international police force (whose U.S. headquarters is in the Justice Department in Washington) will be unrestrained by the U.S. Constitution and American law while it operates in the United States and affects both Americans and American interests outside the United States. by Andy McCarthy

Laws of Sustainability (3)
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-27-2009
Following Bartlett's logic, it's a case of do or die (if not, do and die), if not on the level of the individual, then on the level of humankind. People need to start to care for themselves (and others!) on the level of the species. The selfish individualism fostered by the consumer economy and the whole trash heap of economic growth theory needs to thrown overboard first, otherwise the boat will most certainly sink.

Thanks to Eric Snyder for this. I wanted to Amplify it a bit more (and classify it in our collections). Bartlett is brilliant and pulls no punches. For some of his other utterly complelling thinking on which these sustainability "Laws" are based. Here what we said in Clipmarks in 2007. "To understand the nature of accelerating change, see the Clips below. They show the statistical nature of the problem. Dr. Albert Bartlett: Arithmetic, Population and Energy (transcript) - Part 1 http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/9ACF7407-5408-4A61-9DEC-DAFA7484AECE/ Dr. Albert Bartlett: Arithmetic, Population and Energy (transcript) - Part 2 http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/26B7972E-AD22-4AC6-8AEC-E76CEF735804/ The solution has be implemented virtually instantaneously, if there is to be any chance of survival. But all it takes is a change of mind about the purpose of life -- from earth consumer / exploiter to earth carer / partner. To change one's mind takes only a micro-second and we alr

Obama Sets Interpol Above US Law
Antara
by Antara  12-26-2009
"Interestingly, Interpol's US headquarters is in the Justice Department, run by the same corrupt, pro-terrorist lowlife who quashed an investigation into Black Panther voter intimidation on Obama's behalf. NRO wonders: Why is it suddenly necessary to have, within the Justice Department, a repository for stashing government files which, therefore, will be beyond the ability of Congress, American law-enforcement, the media, and the American people to scrutinize? Interpol works closely with the International Criminal Court, a gang of moonbats who would gladly round up prominent Republicans like Dick Cheney and throw them in jail on charges of insensitivity to terrorists. America has refused to surrender its sovereignty to this ultra-left kangaroo court — a policy Chairman Zero is likely to reverse. In most banana republics, you only have to worry about your own police. But in the dystopia of "Hopey Change," who knows who may soon be dragging you out of bed in the middle of th

Latin America Ends Year With Major Advancements In Gay Rights
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  12-22-2009
With the debacle in the Middle East brought about by the previous administration, serious questions are emerging that the U.S. now lacks the ability to project power on the international stage. Now, with Mexico City's decision on Monday to approve gay marriage, it appears that local governments in two countries steeped in conservative, Catholic tradition - and allegedly not as progressive as the United States - have taken a far more expansive view of human rights and equality than the U.S. If the U.S. cannot project military power, and we can't seem to get a grip on human rights and equality in a way that two Latin American cities have done, what can we do in this country anymore? I am ending the year on a pessimistic note, but it seems to me that the only thing we are good at anymore is consuming anything and everything we're told to, polluting the environment and yet denying the very existence of global warming, cheating the most vulnerable among us, and

Reid Bill Says Future Congresses Cannot Repeal Parts of Reid Bill
merrie
by merrie  12-22-2009    4
i'm not even sure that it's constitutional, but if it is, it most certainly is a senate rule. i don't see why the majority party wouldn't put this in every bill. if you like your law, you most certainly would want it to have force for future senates. i mean, we want to bind future congresses. this goes to the fundamental purpose of senate rules: to prevent a tyrannical majority from trampling the rights of the minority or of future congresses. According to page 1001 of the Reid bill, the purpose of the Independent Medical Advisory Board is to "reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending." For any fearmongers out there tempted to call an unelected body that recommends Medicare cuts a "Death Panel," let me be clear. According to page 1004, IMAB proposals "shall not include any recommendation to ration health care"--you know, just like the bill says there's no funding for abortion. Paging Sarah Palin: the death panel is unkillable.
