okay, i confess i have never heard of this film until earlier this year and while watching it i didnt know what would be in the last scene. but when i saw it, i was literally stunned by its power. i cant remember a scene in the movies, especially that captured such monumental heartbreak, regret and loneliness. what was really devestating was knowing i have played that scene in my life too many times, it is terribly familiar.

Oakland's Peerless Coffee is still going strong
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
More: Peerless' cupping room, in fact, might be the most charming around, with the same furniture that John Vukasinovich used decades ago lining its cramped quarters, along with a shiny new spittoon - essential for cupping. "We thought for hygienic purposes, we should retire the old one," jokes George Jr. Perhaps it will last into the next generation - there's already a fourth in the wings. Will Kristina's oldest son, 7-year-old John William, become the family's next great cupper? "I hope," George Jr. says with smile. "Bring him on."

Finishing fourth in the men's category was another American, Ryan Hall. Hall, 27, is a rising star on the world running circuit and made headlines last year by running the London marathon in a stunning 2:06:17. Americans once dominated long-distance running, bringing home consecutive gold medals from 1970-82. Marathon legend Bill Rodgers won the New York City four years in a row from 1976 to 1979, and Alberto Salazar took walked away with successive victories from 1980-82. The marathon, which began in 1970 with a mere 127 runners, now hosts 38,000 athletes from around the globe, according to the marathon's Web site. Known for its diverse, punishing terrain, the annual event spans all five of New York's City's boroughs, finishing in the heart of Central Park. Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.

Crazy Sheriff Joe Arpaio facing FBI investigation for abusing his power by arresting his critics
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-1-2009
We described Arpaio's incredible thuggery late last year in his dealings with the public, especially those who dare criticize him. An anti-Arpaio group called Maricopa Citizens for Safety Accountability, which formed last year in response to investigative reports and studies demonstrating that Arpaio's insane obsession with illegal immigrants was destroying his office's ability to actually deal with real law enforcement work, began showing up at county board meetings and asking to speak. Arpaio actually sent out his deputies in force to patrol these meetings, and they arrested people for merely applauding Arpaio's critics. If that sounds fascist to you, that's about right -- after all, some of the local neo-Nazis are Arpaio's biggest fans -- and he's been known to return the love.

'Fear detector' being developed that will be able to sniff out terrorists
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-1-2009    1
Evidence that the smell of fear is real was uncovered by US scientists last year who studied the underarm secretions of 20 terrified novice skydivers. The researchers found that people appear to respond unconsciously to the sweat smell of a frightened person. Scientists at City University London now hope to develop security sensor systems that can detect the human fear pheromone. Team leader Professor Tong Tun told The Engineer magazine: 'The challenge lies in the characterisation and identification of the specific chemical that gives away the signature of human fear, especially the fear in relation to criminal acts.'

The *real* balloon boy of 1964
Lexica
by Lexica  10-20-2009
More: As his feet flew off the ground, one of his father's friends grabbed his legs and tried pulling him down. The yank wasn't strong enough to bring the balloon back, but it did cinch the rope tightly around four fingers of his hand. "I couldn't have let go if I had wanted to," Nowell said. "It was almost like a dreamlike experience. As the people on the ground got smaller and smaller, all I wanted was to do anything I could to relieve the pain." Nowell says it hurt so much he was trying to reach his pocketknife, thinking he would cut the rope, even if it meant dropping from the sky. Meanwhile, up in the basket, balloonist William Berry of Concord was utterly unaware that he had a passenger. The racket from the hot air burner kept Berry from hearing Nowell yelling. It wasn't until he reached 3,000 feet that he turned off the burner and looked over the side to see a boy hanging from a rope.

Salman Rushdie should have got a prostitute'
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-18-2009
Last week, in her first interview since the split, a furious Pia accused Rushdie of being ‘cowardly, dysfunctional and immature’. Far from her being the one who made all the running in the relationship, it was Rushdie who pursued her for more than a year, she insisted. But once they had become lovers, she claimed, the great novelist showed little real interest in her, apart from sex and parading her around in public as a trophy girlfriend. She says he was also obsessed with his fourth wife, the beautiful Indian-American model and TV presenter Padma Lakshmi – and would begin the day by putting his own name into Google, the internet search engine, to see what had been written about him. Self obsessed little bollocks!

Australian & Canadian Employers Adding Jobs!
merrie
by merrie  10-9-2009    1
......after a 31,900 increase in August. The jobless rate was probably unchanged at a 33-year low of 4.3 percent. The Bureau of Statistics releases the report tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in Sydney. Sustained jobs growth justifies the Reserve Bank's decision to raise its benchmark interest rate in August to damp inflation pressures in an economy that is growing at the fastest annual pace in three years. Miners are hiring workers as they expand to meet surging Chinese demand and retailers are opening new stores as consumer spending picks up. ``The odds favor another decent jobs number, consistent with the underlying strength of the economy,'' said Su-Lin Ong, senior economist at RBC Capital Markets in Sydney. ``We expect the unemployment rate to hold down at a three-decade low confirming the stretched nature of the labor market.''

Medicare Waste Goes Unchecked: Thanks to Pete Stark (D-Calif) and Dave Camp (R-Mich)
merrie
by merrie  10-6-2009    1
From wheelchairs and walkers to orthopedic shoes and needles, Medicare buys tens of thousands of products every day for elderly Americans. "There were products that we had as much as 75 percent savings. The average was 29 percent," said Mike Leavitt, the former HHS secretary who oversaw the program. "It would have saved billions if we could've actually implemented it, but Congress deferred it. In Washington speak, that means we put it off forever," he said. Leavitt blames Congressmen Pete Stark (D-Calif.) and Dave Camp (R-Mich.) for introducing legislation that terminated the contracts and postponed the program for 18 months. Leavitt says the congressional intervention helps explain why many are suspicious of claims that Washington can cut enough waste to actually pay for health care reform, as President Obama told a joint session of Congress last month . "Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid will pay for most of this plan,"

Following The Damage Inflicted By The Pelosi-Obama-Reid Economy …

Maybe we’re out of the woods in the sense of the economy finally starting to grow again, but Pelosi, Obama, and Reid shrunk it by about 3.8%. There’s a lot to make up, and one decent quarter, if that’s indeed how the third quarter turned out, does not a turnaround make.

Beekeepers Tell Pesticide Firm to Buzz Off
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-4-2009    1
This is absurd! As Graham White, a beekeeper in the Scottish Borders and an environmental author states: "Putting Syngenta in charge of UK research into the causes of honeybee deaths is arguably the equivalent of putting the tobacco companies in charge of research into lung cancer." It’s a foregone conclusion that Syngenta will find that they are not responsible for the decline in bee population. This is a clear case of government in the back pocket of another corporation. And once again, the public is powerless to have any effect on stopping this travesty and government just rubs our noses in the fact.
