Bringing Overpaid Executives To Heel
debbyski
by debbyski  Yesterday 8:47 PM
"The remedy for the rule of power is the rule of law. We need new laws to check the unfair distribution of the fruits of our labor. One such law could set a maximum ratio at any given company between the highest executive compensation and the lowest worker's wage. Another could set a minimum ratio for the division of income between labor and shareholders. Still another could raise the minimum wage and tie it to the median wage, which would make the minimum wage a consistent living wage. Overpaid executives take more than their fair share and leave too little for the rest of us, threatening our health -- and that of society."

Miracle at Memorial: Mom and Baby Die During Labor, Revived
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  12-29-2009    3
"After trying, in vain, to resuscitate Tracey for several minutes, Dr. Martin decided to do an emergency c-section right there in the delivery room. But when the baby came out, he too wasn't breathing." "Half of my family was laying there in front of me, there's no other way to say it, but dead," said Mike. "Then came the Hermanstorfer's Christmas miracle. "Immediately after delivering him, her pulse came back," said Dr. Martin. Martin tells 11 News, when pregnant women have complications, they have been known to recover once the baby is delivered." After the delivery, doctors rushed Tracey to the operating room to complete the surgery. In the meantime, Coltyn's tiny, lifeless, body was handed to his father Mike. Doctors still worked to get the baby breathing. "They actually got him started right in my hands. That is an amazing feeling," said Mike.

The Holiday Gift This Country Needs
debbyski
by debbyski  12-24-2009    4
"We also need to invest in our infrastructure, and not just the obvious physical things like our old bridges and trains but more importantly our human infrastructure. We must continue to push for "Medicare Part E - Everybody" - so we can rebuild the social safety net to encourage entrepreneurialism - and along those lines let's fix the bankruptcy bill, and strengthen social security. Finally, we need to think of work differently. Lincoln once said that labor is superior to capital because it precedes it. Nobody gets rich until somebody makes something. We once had an economy that valued laborers - the true producers of wealth - and the middle class. You know. almost everything on this gift list was, in their day, enthusiastically endorsed by Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. And Barry Goldwater. And Richard Nixon. Somehow this country went insane in 1981 when Reagan took power and declared that "greed was good" and America was to be reinvented."

Obama-Geithner Plan to Restart the Bubble Economy
katsteevns
by katsteevns  12-23-2009    2
The new twist is a variant on the IMF “stabilization” plans that lend money to central banks to support their currencies – for long enough to enable local oligarchs and foreign investors to move their savings and investments offshore at a good exchange rate. The currency then is permitted to collapse, enabling currency speculators to rake in enough gains to empty out the central bank’s reserves. Speculators view these central bank holdings as a target to be raided – the larger the better. The IMF will lend a central bank, say, $10 billion to “support the currency.” Domestic holders will flee the currency at a high exchange rate. Then, when the loan proceeds are depleted, the currency plunges. Wages are squeezed in the usual IMF austerity program, and the economy is forced to earn enough foreign exchange to pay back the IMF.

"Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009" (amnesty)
merrie
by merrie  12-21-2009    2
Provides temporary visas and work authorization for detained workers when they have been retaliated against by their employer for asserting their labor rights and they agree to pursue labor claims against their employer. Also expands U visas to provide for whistleblower protections with regard to worker exploitation, civil rights violations and retaliation for exercising labor rights. Not to repeat myself, but this is yet another chance to thwart enforcement, in this case affirmatively: by obtaining a work permit. Expect illegal aliens to file bogus claims and sympathetic members of the judicial system to more or less let them get away with it. Ending discrimination: Preempts any state or local law that discriminates against an individual based on immigration status or imposes sanctions on any individual or entity based on the immigration status of its clients, employees or tenants. This is one of the hidden gems, in which they try to prevent things such as the

Oshkosh Award Raises Questions
Darrylstuff
by Darrylstuff  12-20-2009
Agree w/J. Gansler that job creation shouldn't be a criteria for Gov contracts--would result in labor intensive, inefficient bids (oink, oink!). BUT the DOD can't continue to ignore the drastic market shift over 20 years that has virtually destroyed the ability to conduct truly competitive bids for large contracts. Since Bill Perry's "Last Supper," we find only 1 company can build large acft, 2 or 3 can build satellites, 3 can build heavy duty trucks, etc. Budget realities mean that if a firm loses a big contract like this, the next opportunity may not come along for 5, 10, even 20 years. Few firms can afford to stay in the market on the hope that they'll win "next time." Unfortunately, the govies just don't get it, as evidenced in these 2 articles: http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1289/1 http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aIrSOQpbzRfc I haven't seen serious discussion of structural causes, and acquisition strategies to combat them anywhere.
