POPS 9.11 Remembered 9/11: Timeline of Terror Special Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 at 10 p.m. ET http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548605,00.html "We love you, Dad, and we miss you," said Philip Hayes Jr., whose father, long retired from the Fire Department, rushed to the site that 2001 morning and ultimately gave his life. President Barack Obama, observing his first Sept. 11 as president, had signed an order declaring it a day of service. He and first lady Michelle Obama marked a moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House as a bugler played taps at 8:46 a.m., when the attacks began. Obama has distanced himself from many of the anti-terror policies of former President George W. Bush, but his remarks recalled Bush's speech to Congress in the immediate aftermath of the attacks: "We will not tire, we will not falter and we will not fail." Defense Secretary Robert Gates oversaw the ceremony held Friday at the Pentagon memorial.

POPSYankees’ Postgame Wrap-Up in the Name of Charity This story is really about how individuals are doing something to help the needy. You cannot and should not expect the government to do it. They are more concerned with making money for their corporate brethren. Syd Mandelbaum started an organization, Rock and Wrap It Up, in 1990 by persuading rock bands to send their prepared, but unserved, backstage and concessions food to local charities and has succeeding in doing so after the performances of 160 bands. Since 2002, his group has added 31 sports teams — including the Yankees, the Mets, the Jets, the Giants, the Nets, the Knicks, the Rangers, and the Devils — and their concessionaires. Carl Thomas, a volunteer warehouse worker recovering from his own hard times, sums it up this way: “When I do this, it keeps rewarding me. It comes back to me at different times, tenfold.” “They who give have all things; they who withhold have nothing” - - Hindu proverb.

POPSThe American Empire Is Bankrupt by Chris Hedges
The cost of daily living, from buying food to getting medical care, will become difficult for all but a few as the dollar plunges. States and cities will see their pension funds drained and finally shut down. The government will be forced to sell off infrastructure, including roads and transport, to private corporations. We will be increasingly charged by privatized utilities—think Enron—for what was once regulated and subsidized. Commercial and private real estate will be worth less than half its current value. The negative equity that already plagues 25 percent of American homes will expand to include nearly all property owners. It will be difficult to borrow and impossible to sell real estate unless we accept massive losses. There will be block after block of empty stores and boarded-up houses. Foreclosures will be epidemic. There will be long lines at soup kitchens and many, many homeless. Our corporate-controlled media, already banal and trivial, will work overtime to anesthetize

POPSVeterans make up 1 in 4 homeless This is a shameful travesty. The mental health toll from war is enormous. With the spotlight on the plight of Iraq veterans, they hope more will be done to prevent homelessness and provide affordable housing to the younger veterans while there's a window of opportunity. "People get tired of it. It's not glitzy that these are young, honorable, patriotic Americans. They'll just be veterans, and that happens after every war." said John Keaveney, a Vietnam veteran and a founder of New Directions in Los Angeles, which provides substance abuse help, job training and shelter to veterans. A big problem is that military training does not translate to civilian jobs. What is combat specialist supposed to do? Honorable veterans should never face this situation.

POPS6 Daily Habits That May Make You Sick continued: When the weather turns nice, many of us throw open our windows to breath in the fresh spring air. But that may be an unhealthy move, considering the combination of seasonal allergies and poor air quality of many cities throughout the U.S. According to a recent report by the American Lung Association, 60% of Americans are breathing unhealthy air. 6. Sitting in Front of the TV Sitting in front of the television has become a national pastime and one of our least healthy behaviors, particularly because we often do it while snacking on food that is high in calories. POPSCows With Gas Other institutes, such as the New Delhi-based The Energy Research Institute (TERI), are working on methane capture strategies. One long-running project has been biogas production — cow dung is utilized to make biogas for use in kitchens and even compressed biogas for use in vehicles. "Biogas plants have been very successful," says R.K. Rajeshwari, a fellow at TERI, "Farmers are able to use biogas in their kitchens, to light lamps and to even drive vehicles."

POPSThe Longest Recession Since WW2 Those in denial about the depths and extent of the current recession are apt to call it part of the "normal business cycle." Those who are apt to say this largely do so because the oppose the policies of the Obama administration to address the current severe recession. They minimize the problem because they oppose the remedy. But it doesn't matter. The length and extent of this recession is a matter of fact. It's hardly part of a "normal" business cycle. Another curious fact about those who deny the severity of the current recession: they often predict a recovery will happen. But they are quick to interject that the recovery will not result from the measures that Obama has taken. Rather, the recovery gets the same vague explanation as the recession itself: it will be part of the "normal business cycle." They don't want to credit what will be the historical refutation of their pet economic theories. They are preparing their denials in advance.
