Dinosaur find linked to giant plant eaters
ofcapri
by ofcapri  11-12-2009
The Aardonyx celestae species dates back to the early Jurassic period. Dr. Yates said the creature found in South Africa stood nearly 6 feet high at the hip and weighed about 1,100 pounds. It was about 10 years old when it died, and its death may have been caused by drought. The species shares many characteristics with the plant-eating herbivores that walked on two legs, Dr. Yates said. But the new species also has similar attributes to dinosaurs that grew to massive sizes and went about on all fours with long necks and whip-like tails. Kevin Richardson- The Lion Whisperer
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  10-28-2009    4
Kevin Richardson, zoologist and animal behavioralist, raises and trains some of the most dangerous animals known to man. To do this he does not use the common methods of breaking the animal's spirit with sticks and chains, instead he uses love, understanding and trust. With this unusual method of training he has developed some exceptionally personal bonds with his students. He sleeps with lions, cuddles newborn hyenas, swims with lionesses. Kevin can confidently look into their eyes, crouch to the their level and even lie down with them - all taboos in the normal world of wild animal handling - yet he has never been mauled or attacked. Some call him crazy; others shake their heads at his unique method of interacting with the animals. And Kevin's secret - get to know the particular personality of each animal, what makes them angry, happy, upset, irritated - just like a mother with a child..

Faster Than the Speed of Whaaa?
dmoonme1

Yes I know it's a pic of the New York skyline, but, what do you want from a Chinese newspaper? My friends in Johannesburg use those Internet cafes to message me, we can't use the chat because it takes so long. When they use Google's gmail, on their cellphones, it is almost immediate. I don't understand much about this stuff, but I hope things do get better for that country. I don't know where they even got the $mil to get that underwater cable. I guess Zuma is trying to pull it off though. He has a lot on his plate already.

Don't Worry Be Happy if you are a communist in ZAF
dmoonme1
by dmoonme1  9-10-2009
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande is often seen wearing a Mao cap and is known for breaking out into his favorite tune: "My mother was a kitchen girl, my father was a garden boy. That's why I am a communist." But his new wheels have soured his relationship with his close ally COSATU, the country's largest labor organization. COSATU has asked ministers to return their costly cars and instead opt for cheaper ones favored by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who bought two cars for the same price as Nzimande's one. "Nzimande was the one least likely to go on a profligate expedition ... when the (SACP) often rails against the excesses of unchecked capitalism," said a Wednesday editorial in Johannesburg's daily newspaper The Star. But the SACP has defended Nzimande, saying the German luxury sedan was bought on the recommendations of the police VIP protection unit. The rule book for ministers also allows for such purchases. over the limit....sorry not much more anyway.

"The gender verification test is an extremely complex procedure," said a spokesman, "The investigations will take some days or weeks, and I'm not a doctor to give a conclusive answer as to his or her gender." The track and field sensation had a good laugh at that one. "Just cop a feel!" he said. "You'll have all the verification you need."

The Land of ‘No Service’
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  8-18-2009
"So, like it or not, coming here forces you to think about the blessings and curses of “connectivity.” “No Service” is something travelers from the developed world now pay for in order to escape modernity, with its ball and chain of e-mail. For much of Africa, though, “No Service” is a curse — because without more connectivity, its people can’t escape poverty. Can there be a balance between the two?"

Charles Bronson got your tongue? A review of "District 9"
Lexica
by Lexica  8-17-2009
More: The movie does end on a note of incompletion: characters still at large, maybe the second half of the story yet to come. I craved that, and walked out of the theatre speculating on what more the story could have given me: a virus that turns every human into an alien; an interspecies romance; how the black intern's role could have been bigger. What would protest marches and interspecies activist alliances have looked like, among the aliens? If they landed in 1982, what would the anti-apartheid Sun City campaign that started not much later have looked like? And if they were in South Africa that whole time, why haven't the world intelligentsia anointed some of them for speaking tours? I would totally love to see "Christopher Johnson" in an ascot at some Ivy League colloquium, deep in debate over the roots and meaning of alien poverty. So. There was potential there, but the movie couldn't do it…the ambition was there, but not the follow-through.

Pepper-spray defence means South Africa robbers face loss of balance at cash machines
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-16-2009
"Patrick Wadula, spokesman for the Absa bank, which is piloting the scheme, told the Mail & Guardian Online: "During a routine maintenance check at an Absa ATM in Fish Hoek, the pepper spray device was accidentally activated. "At the time there were no customers using the ATM. However, the spray spread into the shopping centre where the ATMs are situated." In conjunction with the police, Absa is using the technology at 11 sites, identified as high-risk by branch managers. If successful, it will be expanded to cash machines around the country. Transporting money is one of South Africa's most risky occupations. In May a Group 4 security guard was killed in Johannesburg when a gang used explosives to blow open a cash transit van. His partner was shot in the back as he tried to escape. ""

“It took 4 million years to develop our unique human foot and our consequent distinctive form of gait, a remarkable feat of bioengineering. Yet, in only a few thousand years, and with one carelessly designed instrument, our shoes, we have warped the pure anatomical form of human gait, obstructing its engineering efficiency, afflicting it with strains and stresses and denying it its natural grace of form and ease of movement head to foot.”

more: They like to scavenge things, rip up train tracks. So the authorities shift them 200 miles away, into the African veldt. They've built a concentration camp. The residents of Joburg want them gone." Some of the visual effects for the film were done by Wellington's Weta Digital. " the aliens are so mundane and so part of the geography that you don't really focus on them at all," Jackson said. "The film has a documentary rawness to it. It's original, which is good because the film industry today only wants to remake every 70s TV show and superhero graphic novel." * Watch the trailer here.

SA court orders life saving transfusion for 12 year old girl
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  2-21-2009    5
The girl is doing well. SA Human Rights Commission chairperson Jody Kollapen said that in such cases, the right to life took precedence over the right to religion. He said adults were regarded as fit to make informed decisions about their own bodies, but in the case of a child, state intervention was sometimes necessary. Jehovah's Witnesses argue that there are often alternatives to a blood transfusion, and they want to be allowed to consider other options.

tutu talks international peace & reconciliation
chara
by chara  2-21-2009
The name Desmond Tutu resonates strongly with people all around the world. He is internationally respected as a "moral voice" to end poverty and human rights abuses. In 1996, he was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a body set-up to probe gross human rights violations during apartheid. Tutu spoke in London on Thursday to mark the 75th anniversary of the British Council. "I never imagined in my worst dreams that I would live to see the day when the United States would abrogate the rule of law and habeas corpus as has happened in the case of those described as "enemy combatants" incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay. Or that I would hear an American government and its apologists use exactly the same justification for detention without trial, as had been used by the apartheid government of South Africa - a practice that the United States at the time condemned roundly, as was so utterly right to have done."
