POPSPolite Obituaries? Not So Much for Jesse Helms Last Year The Washington Post stressed Helms “rode his divisiveness to victory.” The New York Times obituary threw punches, describing him as the senator “whose courtly manner and mossy drawl barely masked a hard-edged conservatism that opposed civil rights, gay rights, foreign aid and modern art.” The networks were no better. NBC’s Lester Holt blatantly copied the Times: “He staked out firm positions against everything from communism and foreign aid to civil rights and modern art.” let's recall how Helms was eulogized on the Ed Schultz radio show last year. Fill-in host Norman Goldman said this: "That race-baiting, racist, horrible Jesse Helms ad got him ahead of Harvey Gantt and got him reelected in 1990. Harvey Gantt would have made a much better senator and Jesse Helms shamelessly played the race card. He was a miserable rat. The world's a better place without him. I hope he's down there in hell roasting with Jerry Falwell."

POPSLawmaker Wants Letterman Fired
Yeah, he made a joke. Alot of us thought he was talking about the "now 18 yrs old Bristol" getting knocked up by A Rod. Bristol is doing what 10's of thousands of young adults are doing, getting pregnant without benefit of having the father around. Where is the surprise that this joke was laid out there. Gov Palin is pushing this" young girl, raping young women" way too far. This is alot for just one joke Letterman made. In her quote on Letterman inviting the Gov and her husband, she said, "......... no intention of providing a rating's boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show,""Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman." They can't believe Americans are thinking Letterman would think of Wilow as an object of attention. I liked Palin, but she is going in the direction of Jerry Falwell with this DRAMA. Being an Independent in this country is the only way of being assured of not getting sucked into the extremists of both parties.

POPSHypocricy U Is this surprising? Not really. As the article states is that what is surprising is that there were any Democrats at this "university" to begin with. What a joke!

POPSJerry Falwell's College Bans College Democrats Club The College Republican Club hasn't been banned from the college but the Democrats club has been. In this action we see what theological conservatism amounts to: suppression, denial, exclusiveness, sectarianism, and a seething contempt for freedom of thought and speech. It's appalling and an affront to democracy.

POPSWill Geert Wilders Show His Film on the Koran? That's about to change with the expected television premier on January 25 of an un-named film by a leading Dutch politician Geert Wilders dealing with the Koran. Wilders in the past has compared it to Hitler's Mein Kampf and wants it banned; the film will likely make arguments along these lines: "With this film I'm trying to show not only in words but also images exactly what I mean," he says. Unlike the British, American, Danish governments or the Vatican, the Dutch government has prepared. It has adopted a two-track policy of (1) trying to stop the screening and, should that fail, (2) getting ready for crisis mode. An article in today's Volkskrant, "Vrees voor rellen rond Koran-film van Wilders" (translated as "Fear of riots over Wilders' Koran film") provides some details. First, the government is trying to shut things down: FULL ARTICLE http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2007/12/will-geert-wilders-show-his-film-on-the-koran.html

POPS A Bit of Fry&Laurie: If Rupert Murdoch hadn't been born... If Ronald Regan, Margaret Thatcher, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Irving Kristol, Prescott Bush, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Ted Turner, Vladamir Putin, Vince McMahon, Generoso Pope, Jr. ___, hadn't been born.

POPSAn Open Letter to President Obama About the Republicans (From a Former Republican) The Religious Right supply the kind of people who at McCain and Palin rallies were yelling things such as "kill him" about you. That's the constituency to which your hand was extended when looking for compromise on your financial bailout bill. There's only one thing that makes sense for you now. Mr. President, you need to forget a bipartisan approach and get on with the business of governing by winning each battle. You will never be able to work with the Republicans because they hate you. Believe me, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are the norm not the exception. James Dobson and the rest are praying for you to fail. The neoconservatives are gnashing their teeth and waiting for you to "sell out Israel" or "show weakness" in Afghanistan, whatever, so they can declare you a traitor.

POPSMy Paul Weyrich Obit Weyrich, who died this morning , was a founding member of the religious right. Keeping a lower profile than similar minds like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, Weyrich managed to continue his career of professional hatred, bigotry, and lies until the day he died. Good riddance. For those of you reading this who are appalled that I'd be so callous on the occasion of a death of a fellow human being, I counter that Paul Weyrich wasn't a human being. He was hate and ignorance and antidemocratic philosophy incarnate. Paul Weyrich, bigot, idiot, and great big fan of voter suppression, dead at 66. The world is no poorer for the loss.

POPSWhy many Christians reject "Left Behind" views It expresses a minority view - albeit a popular one - that misses the main themes of the New Testament. Its adherents are largely unaware that other Christians find it a distortion of the Bible. Its trendy, highly questionable theology forms the basis of unquestioned support for Israel.

POPSWhat Obama Means to America's 'Info Ops' One of the themes of this conference was information operations, or "IO" -- how the U.S. can influence others around the world. This officer and other conference-goers were disgusted, by how badly the U.S. had bungled this war of ideas, and allowed opinions about America to sink so low. Candidate Obama, the group concluded, was the best IO campaign America had had in years. Allies were more ready to listen. Enemies' narratives about America were being undercut.

POPSMcCain's problem All politicians stretch the truth. Unfortunately, for John McCain he and Palin have taken it to new heights and the MSM is going to keep calling him on it....to his detriment.

POPSThe Lunatic Fringe's Political Twilight Zone (revisited) After 8 long years of the Bush Twilight Zone. Here we are again being sucked into the McCain's version of this same Zone. Where the HELL is reality? McCain's pick of Sarah Palin is almost as troubling as a W. Bush second win. After proving himself totally incompetent with his first 4 years, the US people gave him the majority vote to rule for another 4 years. I know the rest of the world must think of us as Nut Cases. And we deserved the title! Sarah Palin is as nutty as a Jerry Falwell, the "man" who had babbled "AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it's God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." AND, "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." ALSO, "Good Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions." POPSA Special Report: The Right's America-Hating Preacher
Once his plan to “swallow entire America” is complete, Moon told his followers in one sermon, there will be “some individuals who complain inside your stomach. However, they will be digested.” But Moon’s hatred of America is not deemed news, in part, because Moon has financed the Washington Times since 1982 to the tune of more than $3 billion, according to former newspaper insider George Archibald. Moon also has lavished many millions of dollars more to pay for conservative conferences and to bail out key right-wing figures when they have found themselves in financial distress, including Republican direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie and the late Jerry Falwell. Plus, Moon has paid large speaking fees to former President George H.W. Bush – estimated in the millions of dollars – and has feted President George W. Bush’s brother Neil at recent events for the Moon-sponsored Universal Peace Federation. In 2004, thankful Republicans even gave Moon use of a room in the Senate Dirksen

POPSObama's Minister Committed "Treason" But When My Father Said the Same Thing He Was a Republican Hero My dad's books denouncing America and comparing the USA to Hitler are still best sellers in the "respectable" evangelical community and he's still hailed as a prophet by many Republican leaders. When Mike Huckabee was recently asked by Katie Couric to name one book he'd take with him to a desert island, besides the Bible, he named Dad's Whatever Happened to the Human Race? a book where Dad also compared America to Hitler's Germany. We Republican agitators of the mid 1970s to the late 1980s were genuinely anti-American in the same spirit that later Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson (both followers of my father) were anti-American when they said God had removed his blessing from America on 9/11, because America accepted gays. Falwell and Robertson recanted but we never did.

POPSTheocracy Rejected: Former Christian Right Leaders 'Fess up
About 30 years ago, a young lawyer named John W. Whitehead worked alongside people like Jerry Falwell to help birth the Religious Right. Hoping to give the movement an intellectual grounding, Whitehead penned a series of books attacking the separation of church and state and demanding a government based on Christian fundamentalism. Whitehead's books -- The Separation Illusion, The Second American Revolution and The Stealing of America -- made him a popular figure in Religious Right circles. Whitehead repudiated theocracy years ago. It's unlikely he'd be welcome at a CNP meeting now. "Politics," he said in a recent interview, "would never even figure into Jesus' mind. He was a homeless person. He was like Gandhi. It wasn't in the picture. Christianity was not founded on politics. It was founded on helping the less fortunate .... That's how you impact culture." Schaeffer and Whitehead are two high-profile Religious Right apostates, but they aren't the only ones.
