POPSIndonesia minister says immorality causes disasters I wonder what his reaction was to the govt being blamed for these natural disasters. Maybe this is his way of deflecting blame. The politician should be attempting to lead the people into this century, not treating them as backward.

POPSIndonesia quake toll soars past 500 The U.S. Geological Survey declined to say whether the two quakes were linked. "The simple answer is we can't speculate on a connection," said Carrieann Bedwell of the USGS. "Both are in highly seismic areas." POPSSuicide blasts at Jakarta Ritz, Marriott kill 8 see images of the aftermath: http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/07/17/indonesia.hotels.explosions/index.html#cnnSTCPhoto Suspicion will fall on the Southeast Asian Islamist militant group Jemaah Islamiyah or its allies. The network is blamed for past attacks in Indonesia, including a 2003 bombing at the Marriott when 12 people died. The blasts at the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels, located side-by-side in an upscale business district in Jakarta, blew out windows and scattered debris and glass across the street, kicking up a thick plume of smoke. Facades of both hotels were reduced to twisted metal. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw bodies being shuttled away in police trucks. Alex Asmasubrata, who was jogging nearby, said he walked into the Marriott before emergency services arrived and "there were bodies on the ground, one of them had no stomach," he said. "It was terrible."

POPSIndonesia's "love shacks" "He is my special man," she says giggling, nervously flipping her pack of clove cigarettes. "None of the other customers are special." At first he was like all the rest, coming several times a week with friends after long, backbreaking days. Her man tours the local factories, searching for discarded waste that he can clean and resell — Indonesia's version of the recycling truck. He quickly became one of Lina's many regulars and after only a few months, she says they decided to get married. Now, when he visits Balebut, he comes not as a customer, but as Lina's husband. When they get enough money, she said, they plan to find a house and move away from the Citarum area.

POPSHead Scarf Emerges as Indonesia Political Symbol Golkar Party officials rejected accusations by the president’s party that they were trying to exploit Islam for politics; they also denied having anything to do with the recent distribution of leaflets that stated, falsely, that Boediono’s wife was not Muslim, but Roman Catholic. The fundamentalists are trying to force women to wear the jilbab as an act of submission, and had already done so in various municipalities across the Indonesian archipelago in recent years, Ms. Neng said. For the progressives, she said, wearing the jilbab was an expression of a woman’s right. “For women in Indonesia, whether they want to wear the jilbab or not is their choice,” said Ms. Neng, who started wearing one five years ago. “It shouldn’t be political.”
