Parallels to Obamamania in ABC's "V" Sci-Fi Mini-Series
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009
An excerpt from Garvin's Sunday, November 1 Miami Herald review (“'V': The saucer-shaped bandwagon”), which the Chicago Tribune headlined “'V' aims at Obamamania.” Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care. The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don't you show some respect?!!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

Evil: A How-To Guide
Jorjor
by Jorjor  10-31-2009
From the source: Being an Evil Overlord seems to be a good career choice. It pays well, there are all sorts of perks and you can set your own hours. However every Evil Overlord I've read about in books or seen in movies invariably gets overthrown and destroyed in the end. I've noticed that no matter whether they are barbarian lords, deranged wizards, mad scientists or alien invaders, they always seem to make the same basic mistakes every single time. More there. Rumor has it that Dick Cheney had this list posted in his undisclosed location.

CITIZENS FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT
kareval
by kareval  10-6-2009    1
"Nations richer and more powerful in their day than we are in this, have been sabotaged, defeated, enslaved. Babylon was the largest and richest nation of its time, but its lust for luxury made it an easy mark for the Medes and Persians who overran it, and divided its land and enslaved the people between them. Rome was a greater military power than we ever were, but when free bread and circuses became more important to the people than hard work and patriotism, Rome was invaded and looted by the tougher Vandals. The Incas were the most civilized, richest people in the Americas, but ruthless, better-armed invaders destroyed them as a nation, and looted everything they owned and had spent generations in creating. In every case it was the self indulgent weakness of the victim which made victory of the invader easy. Undoubtedly there were Babylonians, Romans, Incas who warned against overindulgence and weakness, who warned that each citizen is responsible for his nation, and that

Who are the Quetta Shura Taliban? The key to understanding Helmand, Afghanistan
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-2-2009
Good analysis of why things are not going well for US, Brits or other outsiders in Afghanistan - the Afghans really know how to organize to defeat those who want to dominate them. As the late election shows, that talent is not applied to bringing the people of Afghanistan together. That may be understandable since for more than 1,000 years they have "survived" all the invaders by being expert at decentralized governing.

"Global Islamic Terrorism."
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  9-24-2009
"Global Islamic Terrorism." --- the phrase of the New Crusades, the propaganda for long term worldwide war Sounds pretty slick. Rolls off the tongue easily. Doesn't take much thought. Creates a nice evil image of the enemy. But...Palestine is not fighting for Islam. It's fighting for it's homes. Afghanistan is not fighting for Islam. It's fighting for it's homes. Iraq is not fighitng for Islam. It's fighting to get it's country back from invaders who started the war based on deliberate fabricated lies. I hope more of us wake up to this and point it out, put it down where and when we see it: we're being sold a false bill of goods....the USA declaring worldwide wars outside the bounds of it's own Constitution, and using lies and propaganda and a one-sided view of who's right and excusing all it's own wrongs. ONE AND A HALF MILLION PEOPLE KILLED IN IRAQ! - someone said at the UN podium yesterday. And not one WMD. Who's the real terrorist? The real warmongers. T

Britain BC / Britain AD
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  9-16-2009
Episode 1 of 2 (BC) and 1 of 3 (AD). Fascinating new understandings of British culture, history, and archaeology. Rather than being solely the inheritors of Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and Norman invaders, Pryor demonstrates that there was a sophisticated homegrown British culture that didn't just roll over when the next group of heavily-armed foreigners in boats showed up. And that in the absence of outside "civilizers" Britons didn't just revert to mud-wallowing barbarians.

Russia Arrests 8 Suspects in Arctic Sea Hijacking
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    1
The invaders reportedly had tied up the crew, beat them, claimed they were looking for drugs, then sped off about 12 hours later in an inflatable craft. Serdyukov reportedly said the hijackers boarded the freighter under the pretext that there was a problem with their inflatable craft. The hijackers, who were armed, then forced the crew to change course and turned off the Arctic Sea's navigation equipment, he was quoted as saying. By the time the Swedish report of the attack had emerged, the ship had already passed through the English Channel, where it made its last known radio contact on July 28. Signals from the ship's tracking device were picked up off France's coast the next day, but that was the last known trace of it until Monday. Serdyukov said the ship were found about 300 miles (480 kilometers) away from the island nation of Cape Verde. The 15 crew members were safe and had been taken aboard the Russian naval vessel for questioning, Serdyukov said.

The American Way of War
foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-31-2009    1
 (3) Explain the invasion to the American public in simple moral terms suitable for middle-school children at an evangelical summer camp: We are bombing cities to bring the gift of democracy and American values, or to defeat some vague but frightening evil, perhaps lurking under the bed, or to get rid of a bad dictator no longer of service to us, or to bring freedom and prosperity to any survivors. (This doesn’t work in Europe, which is honestly imperialistic.) The public can then feel a sense of unappreciated virtue when the primitives resist. Sententious moralism should always trump reason. (4) A misunderstanding of military reality helps. Besides, comprehension would only lead to depression. As Napoleon said, or may have, in war the moral is to the material as three is to one, which implies that unpleasant facts should be played down in favor of cultivating a cheerful attitude. Most especially, it should not be noted that a few tens of thousands of determined, probably genetically

Ancient Fortress City Unearthed in Egypt
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-14-2009    1
First excavated in 1886 by the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, who recognized it as Psammetichus I's camp for Greek mercenaries, the desert site has since been flattened by wind erosion, which left the archaeological remains originally unearthed by Petrie barely visible. "The new fieldwork at the site by Egypt's Supreme Council for Antiquities is most valuable at this time, particularly in that it is rescuing one of the sites of the Delta endangered by development and environmental factors, " Jeffrey Spencer, Deputy Keeper at the British Museum's department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan, told Discovery News ~~~~~ More at the site

Saddam 'feared Iran more than US'

So in the end he was just an excuse to do what daddy and the boys wanted. His crimes against human rights sit comfortably with those of the invaders. The anger many of us felt at the lies, is now justified. Along with the attitude that all politicians lie. Not healthy. And now we watch as the oil is finally given to the lobbyists' employers.

World hunger 'hits one billion'
tabsey

When faced with starvation, laws don't matter. Look at New Orleans, Maccas ran out of food and the trouble began. Maybe if they get their economies free of mining companies and set up dictators, there might not be invasions. I wonder who will comment that the US will blow away starving refugees/invaders, conveniently forgetting the fact that it is already happening there.

Gaza: The Wider War
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-13-2009    2
It is welcome news for al-Qaida. Indeed, Osama bin Laden has frequently characterised the alliance between the United States and Israel in ideological terms as a "crusader-Zionist" assault on Islam. In this light, the great advantage of the Gaza war of 2008-09 to Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and their associates is that it revalidates and reinvigorates the Zionist dimension of their worldview before a global audience. The implications of that are both complex and uncertain, but it is certain that the Gaza war will be used repeatedly in the years to come to implant and reinforce the al-Qaida message.

Well, he we go again. People if you don't want your pet when it grows up, don't buy it at all. If you must get rid of it, have it euthanized . People who just can't don't have the heart to have it killed are the real problem. In some cases it's just plain laziness and/or ignorance. For instance the proverbial kittens off the bridge. But Pythons etc. in the river? Come on. These life forms do so much damage to indigenous fauna and flora it's hard to calculate. I'm thinking better laws and enforcement on bringing these darn things into the country in the first place. Comments? Please...I'd like to hear more from you.

Yankee War Crimes Exposed, Origins of US War Policy
blueridge
by blueridge  5-26-2009
Liberators or terrorists? Saving the Union or destroying cities and civilians? Almost every major city in the South and Missouri was set on fire. Remember "Gone with the Wind"--Atlanta? The imperial terrorism of US wars did not begin with Fallujah. It is a war policy that began here. "Burning (General) Sherman" was a megalomaniac madman unleashed upon the South whose policy was virtual genocide, extermination and destruction, brutal to both blacks and whites, males and females, not sparing unarmed non-combatants. Union Brigadier General James H. Lane: “We believe in a war of extermination. I want to see every foot of ground . . . burned over – everything laid waste. . . .” If "war is hell", the U.S. since the Civil War is playing the Devil. "...blows the lid off the conspiracy of silence about the violent, mass-murdering origins of the American Leviathan state..." -- -Thomas J. DiLorenzo, www.LewRockwell.com
