POPSPost Script - The Lovings Short Time Together I had forgotten this bit of history about the life of Richard and Mildred Loving, an unfortunate post script but their life was well-lived together nonetheless inasmuch as they expanded the freedom of all of us. This blog post from Slate also has an interesting link to the Loving's case.

POPSSouth Carolina pardons black brothers convicted of 1913 killing Police initially focused on Mrs Davis and her husband Bart, who were arrested with packed suitcases which included a bloodied pair of trousers. But investigators' attention shifted when Mr Lewis's stolen pistol was traced to John "Monk" Stevenson, a small-time criminal who said he had been given the gun by Bart Davis's brother. He claimed he was only a lookout when Lewis was killed. However, in a plea deal that spared his life, Stevenson – who was also black – changed his story and named the Griffin brothers as the killers and testified against them. According to sworn statements from fellow inmates, Stevenson admitted in jail that the men he implicated knew nothing of the crime. He said that the Griffins "could afford a lawyer and beat the rap". The brothers were the owners of a 138-acre farm, making them probably the wealthiest blacks in the area. All of the land was sold to pay their legal fees and court costs.

POPSLouisiana JP: Inter-Racial Marriage "Confusing".
A few more quotes from the article follow.. I find this astounding, especially that Bardwell has been permitted by the state, at taxpayer expense, to continue as a public servant. "Louisiana Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell has refused to grant a marriage license to an interracial couple over supposed concerns as to the difficulties the couple's future children might face due to their parents' differing ethnicity. "Bardwell says his main concern is that, in his opinion, interracial marriages do not last long. He insists he is not racist*, telling local paper the Hammond Daily Star: "I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves... in my heart, I feel the children will later suffer." "According to an AP article, which can be found here, Beth Humphrey phoned Bardwell to inquire about signing their marriage license on Oct. 6, but was told by his wife that Bardwell did not sign interracial marriage licens

POPSJustice of the Peace Bardwell is wrong that mixed-race children suffer because they are mixed-race
More: These desires and questions don't change just because your parents are from different racial backgrounds. And they certainly don't get easier if your parents are from different faiths, different parts of the world, different ... you name it. So Mr. Bardwell is just simply ridiculous if he thinks he's thinking about the children. Yes, children go through tough times, but we are resilient. Even more important, we learn from our challenges -- and I think we become better people. Because I am of mixed race, I cannot simply stick to stereotypes of how one racial or ethnic group behave. I must look at each individual independent of what I think -- and I think that assessment happens when people look at me and try to figure out what I'm all about. This process of not jumping to conclusions, of really viewing people on some deeper level, makes me a better person. And I think it could work for you, Mr. Bardwell.

POPSLouisiana Justice Of Peace Refuses To Wed Mixed Couples "It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

POPSAmazing -- Yes bigotry lives on. Esp among our elected officials. Left to 'ourselves' I'm sure many states and municipalities would also vote to ban interracial marriage... or other 'activities' the majority didn't particularly approve of, but that are (or should be) protected as individual liberties. Thankfully, we have a constitution that guarantees equal protection -- or at least it says that.

POPSInterracial couple denied marriage license in Louisiana More: If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said. "I try to treat everyone equally," he said. Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.… "It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry." The ACLU sent a letter to the Louisiana Judiciary Committee, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell and recommending "the most severe sanctions available, because such blatant bigotry poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the administration of justice." "He knew he was breaking the law, but continued to do it," Schwartzmann said.

POPSClipping Comments: Living in the USA - The Psychosocial Implications of Hair more @ clip source Where to begin in helping them understand that they are, in fact, reinforcing negative and damaging stereotypes about “good” and “bad” hair? That they are encouraging discourses of self-hatred in their young students, rather than self-pride? That instead of being flattered to be called a princess, they should be fighting the stereotypes that beauty is about approximating Whiteness?

POPSSpecial ones2 - see the comment Alessia Ravarotto is going back in Egypt, where it is her job and the father of her child. "My son loves his father, and he loves him", She said the egyptian fathers are often afraid that their foreign wives can leave for ever with their children, and that's why they often decide to take them away before. "It's a loop, someone has to put an end to it" Alessia Ravorotto thanked the present italian government for the job done to give her back her son, and the italian president of Senate, Renato Schifani, together with the egyptian president Mubarack. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is the owner of the daily newspaper "Il Giornale". I remember some titles: "We have to stop interracial marriages" "Marriages with foreigners last half time" "Caos about marriages with foreigners" But I must admit that they are right when they argue that "some cultures are incompatible" with mine. Their one, for example.

POPSThe Anti-Gay Commercial "Another online amusement: NOM lists answers supporters can give to common, but uncomfortable, questions such as "Are you a bigot?" and "Isn't the ban on gay marriage like bans on interracial marriage?" The suggested answers really speak for themselves. Apparently banning interracial marriage was about "keeping two races apart so one race could oppress the other." And gay marriage has absolutely nothing to with keeping two kinds of people apart or oppressing one of them, right? Right. Seriously, the rest of the questions and answers are pretty priceless. You can check them out here. "

POPSDriving through Tenaha, Texas, doesn't pay for some But in 147 others, Guillory said the court records showed, the police seized cash, jewelry, cellphones and sometimes even automobiles from motorists but never found any contraband or charged them with any crime. Of those, Guillory said he managed to contact 40 of the motorists directly -- and discovered that all but one of them were black. The process apparently is so routine in Tenaha that Guillory discovered pre-signed and pre-notarized police affidavits with blank spaces left for an officer to fill in a description of the property being seized.

POPSStewart to Huckabee: At What Age Did You Choose Not To Be Gay? For over seven minutes last night, Jon Stewart grilled former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee on his opposition to gay marriage. Huckabee is touring the country to promote his new book, "Do The Right Thing." When Stewart compared gay marriage bans to interracial marriage bans, Huckabee restated his view that homosexuality is simply a behavior choice:

But it would've been nice if the directors had acknowledged that it was black and Puerto Rican drag queens such as the late Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera who got things started back when the cops showed up at the Stonewall Inn."
