POPSGod Did It! (cont) "In December 2005, federal Judge John E. Jones III ruled that ID must meet the same fate that creationism met in 1987 when the Supreme Court ruled religious doctrines can't be promoted in secular institutions because they violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Judge Jones wrote in his decision regarding a policy of the Dover, Pennsylvania, school district that added ID to the school's biology program: The citizens of the Dover area were poorly served by the members of the Board who voted for the ID Policy. It is ironic that several of these individuals, who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy...."

POPSI Wonder If He Attended? Bruce goes on in his diatribe to quote mine after accusing atheist of this same activity. Well, what can you expect. He is the president of the Discovery Institute, that bastion of creation...er, Intelligent Design.

POPSEvidence vs Dogma This clip pretty well sums up the point. Fundamentalists simply don't realize how abjectly stupid they sound when they constantly parrot the religious right mantra that evolution is "only a theory". No matter how often they hear that they are wrong in their use of the word theory they keep on trying to use the same old tired argument. They truly are ignorant in the manner in which they ignore what is being said. As the article clipped say, they literally stick their fingers in their ears and go la, la, la. How pathetic.

POPSBritain's (and America's) Secret Religion--Deism
This recent article begins with "the world's most famous atheist" becoming a Deist, i.e. Professor Antony Flew. The reason was this: New scientific discoveries persuaded him, he said, “that intelligence must have been involved” in producing life. In other words, natural reason necessitates belief in a Creator. But the article goes on to describe the difference between Deism, Atheism, and Theism. Any discerning reading (contrary to modern Christian attempts) of America's founders and documents absolute supports that they were not Christians, but Deists, whom, like Thomas Paine, sometimes quoted the Bible, but denied its historical trustworthiness and inspiration, and denied miracles recorded, etc.. It appears Deism is likely to be revived as natural "intelligent design" (which is Deistic, but anti-scriptural philosophy) is made popular and too difficult to deny. Deism is incompatible with Christianity but compatible with Freemasonry, like the Founders.

POPS10 Post-Modern Religions Info: Oh, you thought I was going to forget Him, didn’t you? His Noodlyness wouldn’t be pleased. In an open letter to the Kansas School Board, Bobby Henderson challenged the state to either include his version of Intelligent Design or dismiss it from the curriculum altogether. He gives a very convincing argument for the belief system of his Noodly Savior. Bobby claims that he has written documentation that the world was created by a flying spaghetti monster. He demands that if the Board is okaying the admission of teaching in school systems about the Christian God and his teachings, then the FSM teachings should be included as well.<<

POPSID Course Syllabus I actually found this hilarious. They're required to provide 10 posts to "hostile" websites defending creationism! Priceless!

POPSThe lesson of Amazon.com: start simple and evolve. Though it's taken me a number of years to actually practice this discipline, i have always believed that simple, narrowly defined user experiences are prerequisites for building something big. Google, twitter and amazon are great examples of that.

POPSThe 10 Emerging Technologies of 2009 "Each year, Technology Review chooses 10 emerging technologies with the potential to change lives around the world. Some of this year's choices, such as paper-based medical tests and intelligent software that acts as a personal assistant, could reach the market within a year. Others, like biological machines and nanopiezotronics, could take longer but promise fundamental shifts in fields from computing to medicine, communications to manufacturing. The list includes technologies miniature and massive--from fast, cheap, capacious computer memory to batteries that can store enough energy to power a city. All are technologies that we bet will make a huge impact in the years ahead".

POPSPredisposition to believe in creationism?
Creationist tendency "What her work suggests is that the creationist side has a huge leg up early on because it fits our natural tendencies," says Paul Bloom, a psychologist at Yale University. "It has implications for why most people on earth are creationists, I think." For this reason, it's not surprising that non-religious, college-educated adults fall back on purpose-seeking explanations. Many people have little understanding of evolution and instead view it as a cultural belief, thinking: "'I'm a good secular liberal, I'm no yokel, I believe in Darwin,'" Bloom says. He also wonders if extensive science education could blunt the tendency to fall back on teleological explanations. "It might turn out that if you put Richard Dawkins or Einstein or whomever , no matter how expert or educated they are, they might still make these mistakes." Indeed, Kelemen is running similar experiments on volunteers with stronger science backgrounds to see if they, too, fall ba

POPSIlliterate Bible Readers
<<<Now, here's the rub: Evolution is, according to this view, inconsistent with the existence of God because it causes a few headaches for biblical literalism. So it's God or Darwin; you can't have both. From there it follows that we'd better be sure that our kids learn about God—or at least not about Darwin. And it isn't enough for me to worry about my own children; I have to worry about yours, too. Because if our kids learn about evolution in high school, they will end up having no moral code to live by. It's Lord of the Flies all over again. That is a classic false dichotomy. Most people of faith don't think that the question of God's existence turns on what some archaeology graduate student uncovers with the next shovelful of sand. And most people don't worry that their neighbor might kill them in their sleep if the Earth is more than 6,000 years old. The Bible and On the Origin of Species both offer insights about the world and our place in it. Religion and science can work tog

POPSTomorrow the responsibility for evolution may rest on our own shoulders Our Post-Darwinian Future; Pluripotent stem cells, gene targeting, and artificial chromosomes could leapfrog over evolution and let us take control of our genome, maybe even turn ourselves into a whole new species. “There is no scientific basis for thinking that we couldn’t,” Silver says. “There’s nothing really special about the human genome. There’s nothing that says this is the end.” more from the article: "Who should have the final say on when and how the human genome should be changed? On the other hand, if technology can enable us to eliminate disease and disabilities from our children or insert genes that might make them smarter or better looking, why wouldn’t we use it?"

POPSGay Snipers Are Out To Ruin Your Family OMG!!! The queers are out to not only ruin the "biblical" definition of marriage, but to hit your pocketbook with costly litigation! Imagine the nerve. Who are these people to demand equal rights? Well, they are your neighbor, the nurse that took care of your dying parent in the hospital, and your friend that sits beside you in church. This is fear mongering plain and simple. It's normal to not understand those desires that are not your own, but intelligent people recognize the differences in us all and celebrate them. The truth of the matter is that our Governor Joe Manchin would never sign legislation giving the equal rights routinely given to heterosexuals who are allowed to marry each other. He knows if he wants to serve another term he would never even think such a thought. It's political suicide in this state.
