City Slickers Head to the Country For More Security
GridIron
by GridIron  12-20-2009    3
Motivations can vary, but typically there are three groups: young people buying land as an asset or investment, with vague hopes to live on it someday; exurban commuters who have jobs in big towns or cities but want to escape the sprawl; and back-to-the-land types who want to dabble in hobby farming.

The Human Butterfly Crop Circle
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  12-26-2009
Created 7th August 2009 in the Netherlands. Crop circles are one of those things which inspires as much awe as skepticism from people. Hence, I thought long before clipping this. Personally, I find the image utterly beautiful and the symbolism even more inspiring.

Seed behemoth Monsanto stumbles into antitrust trouble (2)
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-23-2009
The Monsanto strategy of industry domination has worked brilliantly. It must be irritating to be so reviled for such success. Can the money really make up for the notoriety? It must also be a drag trying to pretend that GM is the answer to world food shortages, when independent studies indicate that the technology does not even increase yield after the first couple of years. By then the farmers are dependent. It's the classic drug-pusher marketing technique which is why it is so successful and so damaging.

Santa Claus 'buried in Ireland'
foxyarse
by foxyarse  12-21-2009    1
It is thought that the man who inspired the tradition of leaving presents under a Christmas tree, came from a wealthy family and he is believed to have given much of his fortune away. Early pilgrims visited the cathedral in Myra to pay their respects to the bishop. The bishop was originally buried at a local church in Myra, in modern day Turkey, when he died. Historians now believe his body was later moved to the abbey in Ireland by early crusaders. “St Nicholas Church is still standing and there is a slab on the ground which marks St Nicholas's grave,” he said. Few locals know of the much-loved figure’s link with Kilkenny. “It is an amazing story and yet very few people in Ireland know about St Nicholas's connection with this country,” he said. “Every year now we get visitors to the site, but still not that many.” i

GOP'S NEW PRAYER GURU
debbyski
by debbyski  12-22-2009    1
"Engle's role as leader of TheCall has now received some mainstream media notice but the source of his influence is still largely unknown. Lou Engle serves, alongside Sarah Palin's prayer group leader Mary Glazier, on the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, one of the key leadership groups wielding influence over a sprawling, global new incarnation of the religious right known as the New Apostolic Reformation. Peter Wagner was advisor for Rick Warren's dissertation for a Doctorate of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. In a mid-December statement from Rick Warren, Letter To Uganda's Pastors, Rick Warren lied about his connection to Wagner."

NASA Experts Claim Evidence of Life on Mars
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-1-2009    1
The team has also been studying two other Martian meteorites — Nakhla, which landed in Egypt in 1911, and Yamato 593, which was found by a Japanese expedition to Antarctica. In research due to be published shortly, the scientists claim that both of these fossils also show evidence of microbial life. Bill Clinton, then the US President, said of the research in 1997: “It speaks of the possibility of life. If this discovery is confirmed, it will surely be one of the most stunning insights into our Universe that science has ever uncovered. Its implications are as far-reaching and awe-inspiring as can be imagined.”

The photographs of Berlin-born Sibylle Bergemann are awe-inspiring for one because of the diversity of their subject matter and second for their astonishing insights and sensitivity. Bergemann commands subjects such as fashion, reportage, photographic essays, urban and rural landscapes as well as portraits in an equally self-assured manner. At first known as a fashion photographer, she fast became noted for her photographic essays and her precise observations of hidden contexts.

Parents Are Borrowing From Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-23-2009    1
It’s little wonder, then, that some parents, and even a few child therapists, have found themselves taking mental notes from a television personality known for inspiring discipline, order and devotion: Cesar Millan, otherwise known as the Dog Whisperer. The suggestion that the Dog Whisperer is also a Child Whisperer of sorts has popped up — sometimes couched as a joke, but, well, not really — in parents’ forums like blogs, online discussion boards, magazines, Twitter feeds and podcasts. Some parents are starting to take notice. “When we started watching his shows, we had intended to apply his advice toward our dogs,” said Amy Twomey, a blogger on parenthood for The Dallas Morning News who is raising three children under 10 with her husband, Matt. “But we realized a lot of ideas can be used on our kids.” Indeed, Mr. Millan’s advice has replaced a shelf full of books on how to tame an unruly child. “It’s all the same simple concept: how to be the pack leader in your own house,”

Starlight At The Beginning Of Time
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-5-2009    3
Imagine traveling half a billion light years to get somewhere, only to find no one is there...that's the tongue-in-cheek scenario written up in this nifty article from dailygalaxy.com. The picture below shows scientists glimpse of the oldest light in the universe to finally reach earth. According to the article, this is the universe's "first starlight...light "at the beginning of time." I don't pretend to understand the physics behind all of this, but I do enjoy such awe-inspiring pictures. I hope you do, too.

Freedom and Jeff: Inspiring Story of One Man and His Eagle
merrie
by merrie  8-14-2008    1
She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t bear the thoughtof her being euthanized; of her being euthanized; but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just about in tears by then. That was a very good day. We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to glove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jesses, and we started doing education programs for schools in western Washington. We wound up in the newspapers, on radio (believe it or not) and some TV. Miracle Pets even did a show about us. In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I had stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere) doing 8 months of chemo.

Repaving Slave Street
merrie
by merrie  11-5-2009    3
Demanding unquestioning submission, Obama has set about using liberal principles laid as a horsewhip to the back of freedom. Obama offers the false promise of free honey " beckoning Americans inside the gates of the plantation herding them into the field to work with the goal of collecting sweat to “redistribute” for the common good. In an effort to retain power through, “leveling the social and economic playing field” Obama’s slave owner policy initiatives tether Americans to a ball and chain style of socialistic governance that is realized by enslaving those who would otherwise be free. The President’s utopian aspiration is on track to transform Americans into chattel trapped within a restrictive dependency, robbing us of God-given liberty, preventing the acquisition of property and thwarting individual pursuit of happiness. Obama refuses to appreciate that the type of collectivist schema he campaigns for fosters a shadow of the slavery his wife’s ancestors struggled
