How did the Universe Begin ?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-24-2008    5
The no-boundary wave function also states that space-time was not what we see today at the outset of universal expansion. “When the universe started out,” Hartle explains, “there wasn’t ordinary space-time. Instead of three space directions, as we have now, there were four space directions. At some point, a transition was made to ordinary space-time.”

Before the beginning of the universe
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-14-2008
Alan Guth of MIT, who first proposed the inflation theory nearly three decades ago, says he suspects “the reported lopsidedness will more likely turn out to be a fluke.” However, he adds, “the concept of inflation is really only the framework of a theory, and so far experiment has given us very little guidance in trying to fill in the details.

We were warned
willhelm
by willhelm  9-28-2008    3
Despite these warnings, Woodrow Wilson signed the 1913 Federal Reserve Act. A few years later he wrote: I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men. -Woodrow Wilson

Happy Birthday Ronald Reagan (Thanks for Ruining America)
dulios
by dulios  2-7-2009    13
The continuing fallout from Reagan's policies – the meltdown of the financial sector, widening income inequality, the emergence of lockdown America, the obscene inflation of CEO compensation, the end of locally owned media, market crashes, blackouts, drug-company scandals, rampant greed and materialism -- is all around us. As D.H. Lawrence once wrote in another context, "The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins."

The Statistical Universe - On the Vastness of the universe
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-21-2008
But inflation does not really make the universe more uniform — just huge. If inflation is correct, then the billions of light-years that our telescopes probe are a mere dot on a far vaster canvas. The multiverse comprises a large number of distinct patches, each far bigger than our night sky. What observers see, therefore, also depends on where they find themselves. Most of the regions in the multiverse are inhospitable to life, and their properties will not be observed. But what exactly is life? In order to extract predictions from the multiverse, my colleagues and I have developed a statistical tool to find regions with observers: We look not for life itself but for the disorder left behind by the complex processes that its formation depends on. To understand the physical signatures of life in this way may help us finally to comprehend our own little corner of the multiverse. Interesting Read.

Background Just the facts... The average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.72, this is $.61 higher than a year ago. The U.S. Congress has acted, but in the wrong direction. Last week, the Senate voted narrowly against reversing a moratorium on oil-shale development. Federal officials and industry experts estimate that up to 1.8 trillion barrels of oil is trapped in the region's oil shale, or three times the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia. Laws and policies that restrict access to America’s abundant energy drive up the price of fuel and electricity. They cause widespread layoffs and leave workers and families struggling to survive, as the cost of everything they eat, drive, wear and do spirals higher. http://www.americansolutions.com/actioncenter/petitions/?Guid=54ec6e43-75a8-445b-aa7b-346a1e096659

Bush: Biggest Spender Ever !!! Worst EVER !!! Top WASTER
righthand
by righthand  10-26-2007    1
Defence Under Bush it's grown on average by 5.7% a year. Under LBJ it rose by 4.9% a year. Both numbers are adjusted for inflation. "Including costs for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, defence spending under Bush has gone up 86% since 2001" Chris Hellman of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. Current annual defense spending — not counting war costs — is 25% above the height of the Reagan-era buildup, he said Homeland Insecurity Spending also has soared, to about $31 billion last year, triple the pre-9/11 number. Bush's super-spending is about far more than defence and homeland security. The 2002 farm bill, 2003 Medicare, 2005 highway bill and education.

The Food Crisis Will Be Back
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-7-2009    2
More than 1 billion people, or every one in six, are starving, according to a report issued by the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) on June 19. The number of the hungry increased worldwide by about 100 million in 2008 alone, a hike of 11 percent. "The silent hunger crisis...poses a serious risk for world peace and security," said FAO Director General Jacques Diouf. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-07/07/content_11668272.htm Global warming, top soil degradation, and water mis-appropriation can all be linked to the decreases in production that in turn lead to food inflation. One Stanford study stated that rice and corn harvest has decreased 20-40% as global temperatures continue to rise. Lester Brown states that for every degree C the earth warms above normal, production yields decrease by 10%. http://www.examiner.com/x-9508-Honolulu-Environmental-News-Examiner~y2009m7d7-Environmental-factors-to-blame-for-rising-food-crisis

The One Percent Myth
willhelm
by willhelm  6-9-2009
"In The Constitution of Liberty, F. A. Hayek stated that, "It would probably be true...to say that the illusion that by means of progressive taxation the burden can be shifted substantially onto the shoulders of the wealthy has been the chief reason why taxation has increased as fast as it has done and that, under the influence of this illusion, the masses have come to accept a much heavier load than they would have done otherwise." "The 1% Myth was a useful tool deployed by Liberals to make the majority of the American public feel like victims so they would vote for the candidate who offered them the prospect of seizing from the rich and redistributing to average Americans what rightfully belonged to them in the first place. It was a wonderful distraction to prevent the majority of the public from realizing that they were the real target all along." Kind of a Clumsy clip. Great info and further detail in source article.

Graphic: Timeline of the Big Bang

An informative graphical timeline of the very creation of time, space, matter, and energy in our universe. Cool! I just clipped the first paragraph of the nicely written description that accompanies it. Of course, cosmology, cosmogony, and quantum physics, and the origins of space-time are some of the hardest fields of study being pursued right now. Any other pointers to clip-size explanations would be welcome additions to Clipmarks.

10 things all economists believe
willhelm
by willhelm  7-29-2008    2
"If economics is finally a science, what, exactly, does it teach? With the help of Columbia University economist Pierre-André Chiappori, I have synthesized its findings into ten propositions. Almost all top economists—those who are recognized as such by their peers and who publish in the leading scientific journals—would endorse them (the exceptions are those like Joseph Stiglitz and Jeffrey Sachs, whose public pronouncements are more political than scientific). The more the public understands and embraces these propositions, the more prosperous the world will become."

Have Traces of Cosmic Strings Been Found? Scientists Says "Yes"

The US news media didn't think this post 9/11 "mercy" flight for Bush's personal friends was worth investigating. ============================== How deep the connection goes "September 13, 2001 - Thousands of Americans were dead. They have been killed in a terrorist operation largely run by Saudis. Nonetheless the two men (Bush and Prince Bandar Of Saudi Arabia) each lit up a Cohiba cigar (on the Truman balcony of the White House)... Few Americans realized that these two dynasties had a history dating back more than twenty years. Not just business partners and personal friends, the Bushes and the Saudis had pulled off elaborate covert operations and gone to war together... They had been involved in the Iran-contra scandal, in secret U.S. aid in the Afghanistan War that gave birth of Osama bin Laden." From: House of Bush, House of Saud: The secret relationship between the world's most powerful dynasties by Craig Unger. Page 15
