green-card marriage scam
dl211
by dl211  12-31-2009    1
To cover up the scam, some obtained driver's licenses under aliases before marrying. Camarillo and others prepared fake divorce decrees, tax returns, birth certificates and Social Security numbers cards. The documents helped fool immigration officials, who didn't necessarily verify that they were legitimate, Bleil said. The scam began to unravel after an informant told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about Camarillo in July 2004. When Olga Hernandez and her husband went to the Citizenship and Immigration Services office in 2005 for an interview, the couple were placed in separate rooms. Discrepancies surfaced during questioning, and eventually Hernandez broke. She told officers she'd just been just trying to help a friend and withdrew the petition for a green card.

Government Permission Will Be Required to Travel
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-21-2009
"Protecting air safety is essential, but professional screening at airports already provides for it. Giving the TSA as an official agency the additional authority to decide who gets to go where reaches beyond safety into overextended governmental power. This newly minted "Secure Flight" rule fundamentally imbalances long-standing citizens' rights both to travel and to be left alone. If your name appears among hundreds of thousands on "watchlists," you assert that the government should not require ID to fly, you don't want to reveal your date of birth for concern about identity theft, or you don't choose to declare your gender, you can stay home. PASS ID Act "is REAL ID 2.0"--Same Federalized Drivers License/National ID Scheme
blueridge
by blueridge  8-20-2009
This is like Blackwater changing its name to Xe. No real change, just a new "makeover" to sell it. This tramples the 10th amendment right of the states by pretending that the new federal Dept. of Homeland Tyranny has a right to dictate standards for drivers licenses to the States. It also attacks your 4th amendment privacy, by setting up the same desired data-mining capabilities to watch every 'free American" on demand. RFID included. Tell your Congressmen "no".

“Operation Get Rich or Die Tryin” Perp, Busted Again
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    2
“We’re not seeing a huge array of hackers capable of doing this, but rather a more select group, demonstrates that there is a level of sophistication involved in these hacks,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Erez Liebermann of the Justice Department’s New Jersey district office. But these are just the latest in a string of high-profile breaches that have been connected to Gonzalez. He and 10 others were charged in May and August 2008 with network intrusions into TJX, OfficeMax, Dave & Busters restaurant chain and other companies. Jury selection is slated to begin Sept. 14 in one of those cases. With regard to the Heartland-Hannaford cases, Gonzalez and the two unnamed Russian hackers have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. They each face a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a possible maximum fine of $250,000 on the computer-fraud count and

trust in social networking used to spread viruses
chara
by chara  3-2-2009
If the online "Trust" network breaksdown, then you get a pretty bad week for social networking in general. To an internet fraudster an identity is worth £80, suggests research from the UK's Get Safe Online campaign. The same study revealed that in 2008 23% of net users fell victim to phishing attacks - far higher than the 8% it claims were caught out in 2007. Small wonder that Britain has been described as being in the midst of a cyber crimewave. Here the BBC offers some advice about how to stay safe online. How bad is identity fraud? In 2006, a government estimate put the cost of ID theft at £1.7bn a year. In 2007 Cifas - the UK's fraud prevention service - helped more than 65,000 victims of ID fraud and theft. Fraudsters use personal details to gain access to bank accounts, run up bills, launder money, create false documents such as passports or birth certificates and carry out benefit fraud. The consequences can be very distressing and a headache for victims to sort
