Art on the Edge-Architects of Air - Amazing !
einbar
by einbar  9-10-2008
Levity II, is the last luminarium designed by Architect of Air. It is inspired by the beauty of natural geometry and by Islamic architecture. It is a inflatable sculpture of 800 square meters made up of labyrinthine tunnels accessible for all people. It's a sensual world of liquid, light, color and music. All the lighting is natural light filtered through its different layers. In fact, this sculpture is only open when there is natural light from the sun in order to enjoy walking through is labyrinths and tunnels Luminarium Installation, Sziget Festival, Budapest Hungary, 2008-08-17.

Study Of Countries
Socratoad
by Socratoad  1-14-2007    2
I do not claim that sites such as this are the be all and end all of research regarding any given country. But still they are fairly comprehensive. If any given country or nation intrigues you then I recommend further research. If this site creates a even greater thirst for knowledge then I will have done something useful.

On War and Rhetoric: From Hungary to Iraq
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  6-8-2007    1
It has always been striking how Bush has used similar rhetoric to imperialist dicataorships when rationalizing the war in Iraq and lionizing himself. This is no where more alarming then when the obliviously echoes the rehetoric of the Soviet Union and its invasion of Hungary in justifying his own invasion of Iraq. The Soviets and Bush would no doubt hate each other, but there is a common strain in their ideology: they are all true believers, who have convinced themselves that they can do no wrong. Can a country remain a democracy even as its leaders talk like dictators?

Editorial from the President of Georgia
willhelm
by willhelm  8-13-2008    1
"I have staked my country's fate on the West's rhetoric about democracy and liberty. As Georgians come under attack, we must ask: If the West is not with us, who is it with? If the line is not drawn now, when will it be drawn? We cannot allow Georgia to become the first victim of a new world order as imagined by Moscow. "

Higher rate of gun ownership does not mean higher violent crime rate
ghgroenewold
by ghgroenewold  9-2-2007    4
Some more: "The reason that gun ownership doesn't correlate with murder rates, the authors show, is that violent crime rates are determined instead by underlying cultural factors. "Ordinary people," they note, "simply do not murder." Rather, "the murderers are a small minority of extreme antisocial aberrants who manage to obtain guns whatever the level of gun ownership" in their society."

Eastern Europe Can Defend Itself
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2008    2
The small number of interceptors are designed to shoot down an equally small number of Iranian missiles -- not the overwhelming numbers that Russia deploys. Poland and other states should be under no illusion they can count on the U.S. in a crisis. In the past we left Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the lurch. More recently we haven't done much to help Georgia. We have already seen how the tiny Georgian armed forces -- with fewer than 30,000 men -- were routed by the Russian invaders. According to the CIA's World Factbook, Georgia has over 900,000 men between the ages of 16 and 49. It could easily create a larger military force than it has, but that would require spending more on defense. By the CIA's estimate, its defense budget was just 0.59% of GDP in 2005. According to the International Institute of Strategic Studies, one country in Eastern Europe spends more than 2% of GDP on defense. Bulgaria at 2.2%. Romania is in second place at 1.9%, followed by Poland at 1.8%.

No Shortcuts to First-World Wealth
Kore7
by Kore7  9-2-2007    1
New cluster-analysis of the world's product export space reveals the differences in connectivity and diversity between nations' production capacities as well as the very sizable developmental gaps in this network that keep poorer countries on the industrial fringes. The rich countries of the industrialized world tend to have broad portfolios of industries, and accordingly occupy large areas of the product space, usually including much of the network's core. Fast-growing developing countries such as China, Thailand, and Hungary are strong in some of those central, well-connected regions. The poorest countries, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, tend to specialize in a few of the peripheral products—such as oil for Nigeria and copper for Zambia. EDIT :My first title was too generic ("Mapping the Wealth of Nations.")
