POPSHawaii False Killer Whales May Be Placed on Endangered Species List "The dolphins can grow as long as 16 feet and weigh more than 1 ton. They resemble killer whales but are almost completely black instead of black and white. They're found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide, including Maryland, Japan, Australia and Scotland. But scientists estimate only about 120 live in waters up to 60 miles off Hawaii's coasts." Because False Killer Whales also exist in waters further out from Hawaii (known as the Pelagic population) Scientists are considering whether the "insular" stock should be considered as a "distinct population of animals under the endangered species act."

POPSComputers Can't Show You the Monet A study in the journal Computers & Graphics finds that computer programs for identifying works of art fall far short of even nonexpert human judges, because of our ability to psychologically evaluate scenes.

POPSDo dolphins deserve protection as ‘people’? Not sure why a lot more scientific research needs to be done.I thought science was not supposed to have the answers to moral questions. I remember Born Free (even if it was faked, we kids didn't know it). There has already been a fair amount of work done on this issue under the headings of Wild Law and Earth Jurisprudence.

POPSScientists say Dolphins Should be Treated as 'Non-Human Persons' Marino and Reiss will present their findings at a conference in San Diego, California, next month, concluding that the new evidence about dolphin intelligence makes it morally repugnant to mistreat them. “The scientific research . . . suggests that dolphins are ‘non-human persons’ who qualify for moral standing as individuals,” he said.

POPSSurrogate robotic arms for monkeys This may be old but it isn't any less exciting for that. Monkeys are able to use robotic limbs, they are able to tell the difference from their limbs, the precision at which they operate those limbs is high enough to be useful and it is expected to be increased. This means that humans that have lost a limb could use robotic prostheses, while humans that keep all their limbs could potentially use supernumerary limbs. SciFi may not be completely out of reach.

POPSArdi Oldest Human Ancestor n it's Female :D Nicknamed Ardi, the 4.4 millionyear-old female partial skeleton, Ardipithecus ramidus, was discovered in the Ethiopia in 1994. It took a team of 47 international scientists approximately 15 years to piece together her fragile remains in order to reveal her significance. Some of the questions answered by studying Ardi include how hominids became bipedal (walk on two feet) and revealing the first evolutionary steps taken by our ancestors after humans diverged from a common ancestor we once shared with chimpanzees http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/ardipithecus/ardipithecus.html

POPSAre Humans Brighter Than The Sun "Both humans and the Sun are pretty close to being such radiators, and it’s not too bad to just assume they’re blackbodies. " I quite like the inquiry of this article... and the humour of the pic as well

POPSMilitary Working Dogs; Saving Lives on the Battlefield “These dogs are important because of the job they do for our military,” said Chirdon, who has been in the Marine Corps for more than six years. “They clear houses, roads and many other areas for our deployed military men and women. “Military working dogs are also very smart and, no matter how good technology is, a dog is always better. They also provide a huge psychological deterrent to enemies and stop many potentially bad situations before they even start. Nobody wants to be bit by a dog,” he said. Chirdon understands that facing ferocious attacks, hammering in constant commands and providing frequent praise will one day pay off with human lives saved on the battlefield.
