POPSThe story of a thoroughbred. The racing industry slaughters horses who fail to make the grade. Stolen pets are slaughtered to feed people in countries who eat horse flesh. A sad indictment of the human race, but some people are working hard to stop this abomination. Please sign their petition.

POPS19th-Century Painter Van Gogh Died Of Self-Inflicted Gunshot 29 July 1890 * Born: 30 March 1853 * Birthplace: Groot Zundert, Holland * Died: 29 July 1890 (self-inflicted gunshot) * Best Known As: The marvelous painter who cut off his own earlobe A 19th-century painter, Van Gogh is almost as famous for his mental instability as for his vivid paintings. His career as an artist lasted only 10 years and coincided with frequent bouts of depression and anguish Among his favorite painters at this time were Jean François Millet, Rembrandt, Honoré Daumier; among his favorite authors, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Harriet Beecher Stowe - all of them interested in the poor and dispossessed. Complementing Van Gogh's dismal subject matter of this time were his colors, dark brownish and greenish tones. The masterpiece of the Dutch period is the Potato Eaters (1885), a night scene in which peasants sit at their meal around a table.

POPSFear of Terrorism Lowest Since 9/11 More bad news for McCain. "Sen. McCain's greatest strength is in foreign policy, particularly his reputation as the candidate best able to fight the war on terror," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director. "As the threat of a terrorist attack continues to recede in the mind of the American voter, the state of the economy and other domestic issues are likely to become even more important. That would be good news for Sen. Obama, since the Democrats currently beat or tie the Republicans on every issue except terrorism." The piece also cites Bush's low approvals as a source of worry for Team McCain.

POPSWorm-like Marine Animal Providing Fresh Clues About Human Evolution The human genome has only about 25 percent more genes than the amphioxus genome, according to Holland. During evolution, humans have duplicated genes for different functions. Such duplication has given humans and other vertebrates a much larger "toolkit" for making various structures that are absent in amphioxus, including cells for pigment and collagen type II-based cartilage, for example.

POPSBeer has gone to the dogs "Imported from Holland, where it is called Kwispelbier - "tail-wagging beer" - it is being sold at £1.99 for a 33cl bottle. Made using a traditional brewing process, the drink contains malt barley extract. A spokesman for Pets at Home said: "While initially people may think of the drink as a novelty, it makes a delicious treat for a thirsty dog. "It also encourages drinking, which is good for the kidneys, and is a great source of vitamin B. "It means pets are even more a part of family life as they can enjoy a beer, too."

POPSMan's Best Bud Deserves Beer Kwispelbier currently retails at 7.35 Euros ($9.60) for four bottles plus postage on www.dogbeer.eu. This makes it an expensive tipple when compared to Holland's better-known beer brands which, as yet, have not unveiled plans to move into the pet market. Cats too will soon be able to get their whiskers into something stronger than the usual saucer of milk. Berendsen is planning to launch an as-yet-unnamed beer for felines in 2008. Meow!
