Disappearance of the Ganges
Deepti
by Deepti  12-13-2006    2
Much of the river water comes from underneath the glacier. If the glacier at Gaumukh does continue to recede or melt away, and if the Ganges would ever cease its flow or begin to dry up, it would certainly mean the end of an era and a drastic effect on the spiritual culture as we have known it in India. Indeed, it would never be the same.

Science and Hinduism | Interview with physicist V.V. Raman on "Speaking of Faith"
enbar
by enbar  11-13-2006    1
The notion of a conflict between science and religion is dependent on a heavily Christian conception of what religion really is. Interview with a Hindu physicist. Speaking of Faith has a weekly podcast on religion. Always very good. Call ++1 (510) 495-6326 to listen to the most recent episode (thanks Socratoad !).

The Top Dozen Religions of the World
delete101
by delete101  6-11-2007    5
I'm amazed that a large portion of the world is Islam. Obviously, there may be drastic implications of a global, Islamic Jihad, which is why peace must be fostered among ALL religions. Unfortunately, Islamic extremists believe our occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan is a threat/war against Islam. America, on the other hand, can't even agree on what the fuck the meaning behind our occupation is.

Fighting for a Downgrade
CrazyRedHead

Cultural divide — The Hindu social and cultural system in India is divided into castes that are inherited or married into and has been dated to 1,000BC — There are thousands of castes and subcastes in India. Hinduism ascribes degrees of purity to different jobs — Brahmins are traditionally the priestly caste, while Dalits are a “scheduled caste”. Dalits and tribal communities represent half of India’s poor population — Caste discrimination was outlawed in 1950, and 22.5 per cent of university places and government jobs were reserved for Dalits and tribal people
