"It's the combination of the landscape and the people," Melzer a former philosophy professor says "Greeks have an endless ability to be happy, and we Israelis can only learn from them."

They find that Americans have enormous misconceptions about Bethlehem's history, demographics, and even location; while Christian Bethlehemites, who are mostly Palestinians, see Israel as systematically destroying the town's Christian heritage (which, they say, has been protected by the Palestinian Authority).
