POPSThe Okapi - the mythical 'African unicorn' "At the beginning of this century the okapi attained near-mythical status, with its ability to lick its own eyes, its large rounded ears with extremely acute hearing and its stripey hind legs. It was one of several animals belived to include the unicorn that roamed the deepest parts of the jungle but could not be caught by man. Phillip Gosse's book The Romance of Natural History, published in 1861, mentioned evidence of the okapi and some speculated that he had found evidence of the unicorn. It was not until 1901 that the okapi was fully understood and given its name."

POPS Sea Turtles' Mystery Hideout Revealed Before this study, scientists had two "snapshots" that provided scant clues about the missing information on the lives of green turtles: When they hatch, the 2-inch-long (5-centimeters) sea turtles push through seemingly colossal surf. Then, between three and five years later, the now juveniles reappear closer to shore. The scientists collected samples from the shells of 44 green sea turtles at a site near Great Inagua in the Bahamas. They analyzed heavy and light stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen from both the oldest (earliest-grown) and newest sections of the shells. The isotopes act as fingerprints for an animal's diet (carnivore or herbivore) and where in the ocean the animal lived. The results indicated the green sea turtles spent their lost years in the deep ocean, feeding as carnivores, before moving closer to shore and switching to a vegetarian diet of sea grasses.

POPS105 foot Dinosaur unearthed in Argentina. Love the name Futalognkosaurus dukei Mapuche indian word for giant/chief. The Duke is an energy Co, It was big, but mainly around the middle but it also had a very long neck and tail. The skeleton was one of the most complete ever found. When I saw the Indian word for giant, I wondered why the English words big, giant, and titan seemed to be so small by comparison. Of course English is a weird language.

POPSDuck billed dinosaur amazes scientists Had a face like a ski jump, and nostrils like a whale. They seemed to have little defense against predators, and they have found few similar fossils. This is the first description of this species. Looks like it has the face, the weight, and the vulnerability, to have spend most of the time in the water. Looks like something that was the ancestor of a whale, but I don't know how close they are.

POPSNYT: The Long Zoom (or: how Will Wright could change the world) The article is more or less about Will Wright's new game "Spore". For those of you not "in the know" this game diverges from the rest... there e is very little violence, and the small amount in it is cartoonish, and not glorified. The games' concept starts at the cellular level, allows you to build a create from a single celled organism, then a tribe, society, civilization, planet, galaxy, universe, all the while learning about diversity, and cause-effect actions. Making your creature a predator (literally, as in the Arnie sense), while allowing your creature to better survive in the wild or as a tribe can have harsh consequences when you meet other civilizations. Likewise, making them an herbivore can make it hard dot survive predators at all... Read the article.. It's quite interesting.. it just irks me that the damned game won't be out till mid-late next year at the soonest!!
