POPSBaby RIce Gourmet Popcorn I'm not shilling for these people, but if you love popcorn you haven't lived until you've had a bowl of baby-rice popcorn. If you live in the farm belt, seek some out locally. Be sure to buy a large quantity, because once you've had it, there's no going back to Orville.

POPSPick a peck of pimientos de Padron More: On menus: Chefs usually pan-fry these peppers, sprinkle with salt and then serve up as bar snacks, which is exactly how you can get them at Cesar in Berkeley. Alembic and Zinnia in San Francisco prepare the less spicy shishito the very same way. Other restaurants serve the sometimes spicy Padrons with heirloom tomatoes - Zuni Cafe pairs them with Cherokee Purples and Incanto puts them alongside Sungolds.

POPSTree People The shaping process takes years. New trees are planted in the Spring and Peter and Becky harvest completed pieces in the Fall. After harvesting, the stumps usually sprout new growth, which can be again sculpted into living art or sustainable furniture. After trees are carefully sculpted for years into the desired shape, the mature pieces are harvested. Peter saws the trees at the base and begins the work of removing the bark to create naturally beautiful and unique art furniture. After a six-month to three-year period of drying, the Pooktre is sanded and smoothed and the finished work is oiled or stained and given new life as a treasured heirloom.

POPSDo you know where your seeds come from?
Americans dislike corporate monopolies. Monsanto has stealthily become just such a monopoly. But they are carrying their game of ‘world domination’ to another level. They are genetically modifying our food stuffs in such a way that will guarantee their position in the food and home gardening industry. They currently control 85%-90% of the U.S. nursery market. Their ‘close relationship’ with government has made it almost impossible to save seeds from plants you grow on your own land. And just to ensure their position at the top of the heap they are genetically modifying every plant they control so that any seed produced is infertile. If your crops experience some sort of disease, Monsanto will sell you the chemical that will turn on the disease fighting gene in that plant. The only way, for now, that we can fight this Franken-monster company is to buy heirloom seeds. Heirloom seeds do not have patents but I imagine Monsanto is working to ‘correct’ this condition.

POPSReally useful (but not expensive) kitchen gifts they'll truly appreciate A few notes: An oven thermometer doesn't make your oven more functional, it makes it functional . The Perfex pepper mill is a bit pricey, but literally heirloom-quality – I inherited mine from my mother, almost 15 years ago, and she'd had it for as long as I can remember. A Dutch oven is really useful for a variety of things; the monkey and I have a small, 2-quart version that works nicely for the two of us. The Benriner mandoline is a kitchen delight, and can be found for as little as $15 at many Asian grocery stores. Microplane zesters and graters are a pleasure to use. And I'd recommend bamboo spoons over wooden, myownself. Didn't clip the tiffin box because I think the choice of how to carry one's lunch is strongly determined by individual taste, and it's a mistake to try to guess what somebody else will like. (I wouldn't like or use a tiffin box, f'rinstance.)

POPSWhite House Organic Farm What a wonderful way to put the spotlight on the growing trend of self-sustainability. There has been increased interest in families starting their own gardens and/or getting involved with community gardens. This would set a great example to people everywhere that it can be done. Please go to the website to add your name to petition the White House to use some of its vast waste of a lawn to grow organic food.

POPSSmith Family Antiques
We sell only quality items and have over 20 years experience in the business. My wife and I are both passionate about fine antiques. There is nothing I love more than to admire the work of the true craftsmen that built furniture 100 or 200 years ago. Some items we sell are "as found" but if something we get needs repair, I try to deliver the same quality as the craftsmen of yesteryear. We hold ourselves to the highest standard. If you have a certain piece you are looking for please email us or give us a call. We will try to help you fine it or If you have a family heirloom or a special piece of furniture that needs to be restored, please look over some of our work using the "Restorations" or the "Hand Carvings" link to the left. There you will find photos of a few of the projects we have worked on and several photos of the type of Wood Carvings that we do. We can help with repair or replacement of veneer and some inlay, color matching, and maybe a few upholstery items. We also pay
