Expert Says Oceans Are Turning Acidic
shalaco
by shalaco  11-12-2006
In a study titled "The Future Oceans - Warming Up, Rising High, Turning Sour," Rahmstorf and eight other scientists warned that the world is witnessing, on a global scale, problems similar to the acid rain phenomenon of the 1970s and 1980s.

Why Greenland isn't so green
pokkets
by pokkets  8-29-2008
Greenhouse gas levels before the Industrial Revolution were 280 parts per million (ppm), and now stand at around 385 ppm - just shy of the 400 ppm that prevailed in Greenland's pre-ice era. The more they study climate models the more uncertainty they have, because the weather keeps showing them it involves a lot more than they imagined. But almost any weatherman could tell you that. They usually have trouble predicting tomorrows weather. They also know, that in 20 years they'll be forgotten, and people will be asking the incumbent weathermen. Who will still be predicting a 60% chance of showers. In case you were interested In 982 Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder., he named the land Grænland ("Greenland").] Greenland was also called Gruntland ("Ground-land") and Engronelant (or Engroneland) on early maps. They also say (in Wikki) that while only small parts of the island are green, they are, they are Very green. Perhaps it's the contrast.

Energy at your feet
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-15-2008
Finally, unlike roof-top solar arrays, which some find unattractive, the solar collectors in roads and parking lots would be invisible.” In the lab, small slabs were exposed to halogen lamps, simulating sunlight. Larger slabs were set up outdoors and exposed to more realistic environmental conditions, including direct sunlight and wind. The tests showed that asphalt absorbs a considerable amount of heat and that the highest temperatures are found a few centimeters below the surface. This is where a heat exchanger would be located to extract the maximum amount of energy. Experimenting with various asphalt compositions, they found that the addition of highly conductive aggregates, like quartzite, can significantly increase heat absorption, as can the application of a special paint that reduces reflection.

Rescue drama on slopes of Merapi
invictus
by invictus  6-15-2006
The fierce heat from the volcano's recent eruptions has melted shovels and the tyres of diggers as rescuers try to dig through two metres of rubble. The two men have been trapped in the bunker since Wednesday night, when they fled there to escape a burning cloud emitted by the simmering volcano.

Nice Shooting!
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008
The missile, introduced to service seven years ago but never tested, was fired from a navy Seasprite helicopter in a joint operation with the air force. The Seasprite flew from the deck of the frigate Te Kaha and was accompanied by another helicopter. An air force Orion flew overhead to make sure the area was clear and film the test. Commander Jason Haggitt, who was in the second "chase" Seasprite, said the many people involved had been preparing for several months and "everybody was very focused given it was a rare occurrence and it was important to get it right".
