Government health care rescues protesters at anti-government health care rally.
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  11-8-2009
By the end of the day, “medics had administered government-run health care to at least five people in the crowd who were stricken as they denounced government-run health care.” Bachmann=proof that being severely developmentally and emotionally delayed does not preclude Government service. Ironically, she's the best argument that the government should not be running anything.

The Hole at the Heart of Our Strategy ~ Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  Today 3:13 AM    1
...to the “noble” “heroism” of suicide bombers and, indeed, objectively supporting the other side in an active war is to be regarded as just some kind of alternative lifestyle that adds to the general vibrancy of the base. Since 9/11, we have, as the Twitterers recommend, judged people by their actions " flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing themselves up in Bali nightclubs or London Tube trains, planting IEDs by the roadside in Baghdad or Tikrit. And on the whole we’re effective at responding with action of our own " taking out training camps in Afghanistan, rolling up insurgency networks in Fallujah and Ramadi, intercepting terror plots in London and Toronto and Dearborn. But we’re scrupulously non-judgmental about the ideology that drives a man to fly into a building or self-detonate on the subway, and thus we have a hole at the heart of our strategy. We use rhetorical conveniences like “radical Islam” or, if that seems a wee bit Islamophobic .......

Speech of Joseph McCarthy, Wheeling, West Virginia, February 9, 1950
katsteevns
by katsteevns  11-2-2009    6
Today we can almost physically hear the mutterings and rumblings of an invigorated god of war. You can see it, feel it, and hear it all the way from the Indochina hills, from the shores of Formosa, right over into the very heart of Europe itself. The one encouraging thing is that the “mad moment” has not yet arrived for the firing of the gun or the exploding of the bomb which will set civilization about the final task of destroying itself. There is still a hope for peace if we finally decide that no longer can we safely blind our eyes and close our ears to those facts which are shaping up more and more clearly . . . and that is that we are now engaged in a show-down fight . . . not the usual war between nations for land areas or other material gains, but a war between two diametrically opposed ideologies.

More, from the comments: So by all of your runners, do you include those under 45 and 50 (male, female)? At 25 with good health, should I also be taking a baby aspirin? Posted by: Jessica Dear Jessica… Yes, EVERYONE regardless of age (if no contraindications) should take a baby aspirin (81mg). In this way, we just may make a dent in the sudden death during marathoning statistic! Posted by: Running Doc

Protect against toxic chemicals
kareval
by kareval  10-28-2009    1
I am shocked and deeply disturbed that the law that is supposed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals is so outdated that China is allowed to export toxic materials into the United States that are not only banned in Japan and Europe, but can't even be used domestically in China. Every American alive today, including newborn babies, has hundreds of chemicals flowing through their blood. Many of these chemicals are linked to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, heart disease, lowered sperm counts, early puberty and other diseases and disorders. Yet, of the 82,000 chemicals available for use in the U.S., only about 200 have been required to be tested for safety. And the EPA has succeeded in banning only one group of chemicals, PCBs, from the marketplace. It's time to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). I urge you to support legislation that will: view more 1. Take immediate action to stop the use of the most dangerous toxic chemicals; 2. Give

More: After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000 Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group’s alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee… Sanaga-Yong was founded in 1999 by veterinarian Sheri Speede (pictured at right, cradling Dorothy’s head; at left is center employee Assou Felix). Operated by IDA-Africa, an NGO, it’s home to 62 chimps who reside in spacious, forested enclosures.

On becoming invisible
Lexica
by Lexica  10-23-2009    2
More: I abandoned my cart, walked over to Customer Service, and asked if I could have a comment form to fill out. The Customer Service employee—who, bless his heart, could see me—said they didn’t have a comment form, but he listened to my complaint… He told me that if I wanted to talk to the Assistant Manager…I could deliver my complaint in person. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the Assistant Manager had been one of the guys who couldn’t see me. What the hell. It was worth a try. I walked over to the Assistant Manager. When I was just a few feet away from him, I stopped, planted my cane, and looked directly at him. Damned if I wasn’t still invisible. It was weird—he was a tall man, but when his eyes moved from one side to the other I could see them making an upward bump in their travel path when they were passing over me. He refused to look directly at me for even a second. I kept looking straight at him. There was no way he could have missed me.

Sneeze kills man
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-24-2009
'I can only image the sneeze combined with the Warfarin could have been the cause of death.' Dr John Bridger, who performed the post mortem, said no 'underlying trauma' or skull fractures was found. Coroner for Torbay and South Devon Ian Arrow said John died of subdural haematoma - trauma to the brain - and coronary artery disease. Retuning a verdict of accidental death, he said: 'The presence of Warfarin means the body is more susceptible to bleeding which means it could have been a minor trauma which lead to his death. 'He would have suffered a minor trauma and on the balance of probably it was likely it was the sneeze which lead to his death.'
