How I Set Up a Home File Server For Free - A Review of FreeNAS
merrie
by merrie  1-3-2010    1
Installation and setup: To set up FreeNAS as a home file server, you must make sure you have all the proper hardware first. This means you need a multiple port router, or switch to connect your file server to as well as a network cable for the server. For the actual server, you will need a PC with at least one hard drive (I started with 2) and a CD-ROM drive. The setup process was very easy. I downloaded the FreeNAS ISO file and created a Live CD which I inserted into my old PC. If I wanted to, I could started using it as a file server right there (by simply changing the IP address of the server), but I wanted something that I could use in the long term... something that could auto restart with no user intervention in the event of a power failure. This meant installing it to the hard drive. FreeNAS setup made this easy to do. I simply selected which hard drive to install to, and that was it. After a reboot, I had to set up the network interface

The Senate Postmortem
merrie
by merrie  12-26-2009
other Republican moderates or deal-makers who earlier this year were prepared to compromise. Some 18 Senate Republicans voted to more than double the size of the children's health insurance program in 2007 over the opposition of President Bush, and Mrs. Snowe and Messrs. Grassley and Hatch and others have long joined with Democrats for health-care subsidy expansions that most Republicans dislike. The GOP had no choice but to oppose this plan or completely abandon its principles. Read full WSJ post @ http://bit.ly/7lW0QL

Why Britain faces a bleak future of food shortages
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  12-13-2009
It's a hard truth to face. Without the food, the population will not continue to grow. As babies starve, then people will have fewer of them, and the population will decline. As for the science having another green revolution up its sleeve, it is in way over its head. GM has proved very disappointing when it come to increasing yields.

Pirates Set Up An Exchange to Manage Their Investments
merrie
by merrie  12-3-2009    1
"The shares are open to all and everybody can take part, whether personally at sea or on land by providing cash, weapons or useful materials ... we've made piracy a community activity." Haradheere, 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Mogadishu, used to be a small fishing village. Now it is a bustling town where luxury 4x4 cars owned by the pirates and those who bankroll them create honking traffic jams along its pot-holed, dusty streets. Somalia's Western-backed government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed is pinned down battling hard-line Islamist rebels, and controls little more than a few streets of the capital. The administration has no influence in Haradheere -- where a senior local official said piracy paid for almost everything. "Let the anti-piracy navies continue their search for us. We have no worries because our motto for the job is 'do or die'." Piracy investor Sahra Ibrahim, a 22-year-old divorcee, was lined up with others waiting for her cut of a ransom pay-out

Health 'Reform' Gets a Failing Grade
jatfla

From someone who should know. I wonder if he was consulted. The article is a clear presentation of the pitfalls and consequences. This Health Care Bill MUST be defeated. Then they need to start over and this time include those who actually deal with patients and the insurance issues. As I heard someone say today, it's hard to phantom that America's government cares so little for the well-being of it's citizens.

Countdown Goes To Free Clinic: 'Hard To Believe I Was In America'
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-17-2009    1
Eighty-three percent of the patients they see are employed, they are not accepting other government help on a large scale, not "welfare queens" as some would like to have us believe. They are tax-paying, good, upstanding citizens who are trying to make it and give their kids a better life just like you and me. Ninety percent of the patients who came through Saturday's clinic had two or more diagnoses. Eighty-two percent had a life-threatening condition such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hypertension. They are victims of a system built with corporate profits at its center, which long ago forgot the moral imperative that should drive us to show compassion to our fellow men and women.

Fighting In The Streets - Life In Obama's America
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  11-17-2009
We conservatives have long talked about our willingness to fight for freedom. In a sense, that's generally been metaphorical, especially when talking about domestic rather than foreign enemies. With the far left now on the march, however, it isn't metaphorical any more. It's just one more sign of the Age of Obama--fighting in the streets, as the extreme Left has been empowered as never before.

How to Install Extensions in Google Chrome
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-10-2009
Interesting but i'll pass on this one. ____________________________________ For valid extensions, the Installed extensions section in the Extensions manager, displays the confirming information. Uninstalling or disabling the extensions is also just a matter of a single click from the extensions page. But all this brouhaha for just three sample extensions! It could be a big letdown, if not for third party developers working behind the scenes on extensions of their own. I can straightaway suggest to you two sites that could empower your browser by a bit… Chromeextensions Chromeplugins These sites are not associated to Google but are merely a place for independent developers. But they are the groundbreakers in every sense of the word as Chrome tries to become the internet’s Swiss army knife like Firefox. The salvo has been fired by Google. With time it could be a toss-up between browsers. We just have to pick the browser we want.

Random Thoughts

One good turn gets most of the blankets. There are two kinds of pedestrians -- the quick and the dead. If quitters never win, and winners never cheat, then who is the fool who said "Quit while you're ahead"? Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. What happens if you get scared half to death twice? Multitasking: Screwing up several things at once. Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Looking for a middle class
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-17-2009
A sad depiction of how our middle class has been steadily losing ground to corporate dominance. This new economy is strangling the very people responsible for the success of many businesses who, along with government’s help, are creating this new economy. The days of job security are over. Beginning when companies began turning their ‘full-benefit’ employees into contractors to save the expense of providing those benefits. The middle class is about to be beat down even further when the drive to reduce the deficit and debt takes center stage. Reduction of Social Security, Medicare and other entitlements will be seen as the answer to rising costs and the middle class will be the biggest losers, again. Ms Cocco advises us to “Fight the myths. Break the back of the corrupt campaign finance and lobbying systems. These are hard political tasks. But being pushed further down is harder, still. Because no one knows where the new bottom lies.” Advice we would all do well to heed.

Understanding Government Subsidies
sahara
by sahara  9-24-2009    1
There are many people who will rally behind "socialized" oil, but read on: Hidden Oil Subsidies The real price of gasoline is what people actually pay for it, not just what they pay for it at the pump. That might seem subtle, but there's a big difference. The Cato Institute, a libertarian think-thank, did a study on the subject. What they found is simply mind-boggling. They calculated that the US spent between $30 to $60 billion (with a 'b') a year safeguarding oil supplies in the Middle East during the 1990s, even though its imports from that region totaled only about $10 billion a year during that period. A more comprehensive study that includes the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and other oil protection services (the coast guard is clearing shipping lanes and doing navigational support to oil tankers, etc) shows that actual subsidies to Big Oil are between $78 to $158 billion (again, with a 'b') per year.

Savage Attack Leaves Man With Half A Head
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-13-2009    6
He was left in a coma for two weeks and his brain swelled so much surgeons removed the front half of his skull just hours after he was admitted. He now suffers frequent seizures, has difficulty talking, and lost much of his memory. Mr Gator now lives with his mother, who is his main carer as he can no longer work. Mrs Gator said: "He's just a different boy. His sparkle is totally gone. He used to be so independent but he can't work any more and he can't drive. He's got half a head and he's completely lost his confidence. "There's absolutely nothing protecting his brain now - it's just under his skin. We're waiting for surgery for a new skull plate to be put in." A Havering police spokesman said they had no plans to look for any other attackers in connection with the case, adding: "We gave the CPS all the evidence available and after reviewing the case they decided not to proceed with it. We adhere to their decision."
