Rich "Victims"
darkeforce
by darkeforce  10-25-2009
The conservatives have a mentality where they need to identify themselves as victims, no matter how good they have it, and then demand that things be made "better" for them, at the same time as they scream "oppression" at anyone who has a differing opinion. It's part-and-parcel of the pathological selfishness that marks right-wingers (really, only a step above sociopaths)

Saudi Arabia Wants Compensation if Global Warming Bill Passes
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-18-2009    2
Saudi Arabia, which sits atop the world's largest proven oil reserves, is seeing economic growth slide because of fallout from the global meltdown, but experts still expect the country, flush with cash from oil's earlier price spike last year, to be better able than other nations to cope with the current crisis. Al Sabban accused Western nations of pursuing an agenda against oil producers, under the guise of protecting the planet. “Despite the variability in the region, the current Arab position is mainly focused around protecting the oil trade rather than saving the planet form the adverse impacts of climate change,” said Wael Hmaidan, the executive director of IndyACT.

Asad and Tahir would be the first ones to die. As the months dragged on, I grew to detest our captors. I saw the Haqqanis as a criminal gang masquerading as a pious religious movement. They described themselves as the true followers of Islam but displayed an astounding capacity for dishonesty and greed. Whole thing. I hope Obama, Emanuel, Axelrod, Biden, Reid, Levin, Pelosi, etal, are paying attention. You know, between Filkins and Rohde, I’m starting to warm up to the Times a little. At least until the next al-Qaeda early warning system alert goes up. What’s going on … when even the AP’s Kabul bureau seems to be starting to get it? * Though maybe not as far from Stockholm, New York, your town as some people would like to think. Yes, we’re still having this conversation in 2009.

Robert Khuzami, director of enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission, said the charges show Rajaratnam's "secret of success was not genius trading strategies." "He is not the master of the universe. He is a master of the Rolodex," Khuzami said. Rajaratnam, 52, was ranked No. 559 by Forbes magazine this year among the world's wealthiest billionaires, with a $1.3 billion net worth. Also charged in the scheme are Rajiv Goel, 51, of Los Altos, California, a director of strategic investments at Intel Capital, the investment arm of Intel Corp., Anil Kumar, 51, of Santa Clara, California, a director at McKinsey & Co. Inc., a global management consulting firm, and Robert Moffat, 53, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, senior vice president and group executive at International Business Machines Corp.'s Systems and Technology Group. The others charged in the case were identified as Danielle Chiesi, 43, and Mark Kurland, 60, both of New York City.

More facts, not profit inducing hype
gemfemfox
by gemfemfox  4-3-2009
The article goes on to give concrete examples of the damage "free trade" has caused us. This "recession" is happening for two reasons: 1-the government's greed and acquiessence to banking industry because of tax revenues & campaign/lobby contributions. And, the gutting of our wealth producing industries. For god's sake, go through your pantries and pull out only the goods that state MADE, PRODUCED or MANUFACTURED in America. If the label says "distributed", call the company and ask WHERE it was processed. You will be shocked. Now realize that China is quietly amping up prices and re-valuing the yuan. All the "cost savings" from off shoring will soon be for naught. And, we no longer have the machinery, equipment or government regulation (lack of) to re-create the industry.

Doctors' Piecework: How Many Unnecessary Operations?
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-13-2009
I’ve always thought when money is the bottom line, LOOK OUT! Health care is one of those touchy subjects that people would like to feel, money has no power over. How naive! When money is involved, forgetaboutit, you become a $ sign. I once worked for a funeral home and I was amazed how money was the bottom-line. This creative industry didn’t like, waiting for people to die to make their bucks, so they devised something called pre-need funeral contracts. It’s a contract signed by a consumer who agrees to pay installments on goods and services to assure they have the paraphernalia needed to get rid of their earthly remains upon death. The funeral directors (salesmen) get paid a commission on what they sell. So they try to sell the most expensive items (much like car salesmen) to prospective customers often, resulting in aggressive, hard selling. It’s disgusting, but not as bad as doctors convincing patients to undergo unnecessary procedures to increase their OWN wealth. THAT’S SICK!

We have to admit now that so called "chemical revolution" in fact was chimera, which directed us to our present dead end.

Obama's fear of lawyers may be influential in his decision making. So he should know how it feels. Besides, is it really in line with the image of the man he tries to present himself as to be so limited in his duties? Does the picture of that bold, all-confident, past self-doubting, truth-proclaiming, definer and decider of validity on any issue, man of today really seem like the one who would let a rich, powerful, influential group of people direct his policy-making on an issue so important to the American people? Uhhh,.(pshh) ....Yeahh.

It's the fight against death.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-9-2009
Having empathy and concern for others can be a misfortune because there is so little one can do to help the forgotten ones. That's the way the Insurance Industry would like those who can't afford their high premiums to become... FORGOTTEN. It's only people with a platform such as Mr. Olbermann, who can bring to light the outrageous greed in this country where bottom-line is more revered than humaneness. I guess if they could just get rid of those who can't line their pockets, they would do so but since we are a nation of laws all they can do is lie, mislead and spend exuberant amounts of money lobbying their status quo. Thank all that is good, for Keith Olbermann, he is the guiding light to benevolent thinking of which we all, Conservatives and Liberals alike, can follow, if you happen to possess a heart. He truly is A VOICE OF REASON. thinkingblue View the whole segment here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33213245/

Finally a Consumer Fights Back.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-5-2009
Although, I don’t relate to this woman's belief system, I DO relate to her as a consumer. All of us who have struggled with credit card debt and job losses know the frustrations of climbing a greased pole. The banks have been putting the screws to us for a long time. As a child, I would hear adults talking about LOAN SHARKS. On TV there were stories of bones being broken for non-payment by such LOAN SHARKS who charged exorbitant interest fees. I was glad to find out, this technique was illegal and US banks could never resort to such tactics to coerce payment. In adulthood, I learned quickly, that there were legal procedures of torture, no physical bone breaking but just as vexing. In Capitalism, the torture is mental and longer lasting. Today’s banks use teaser loans to lure us, once we’re captured by their come-ons they pounce and raise the APR's so high, that there is no escape from debt. I salute this lady who didn't take it lying down! She threw a few punches back!

But we spend eight to ten to twelve hours of our daily lives at work, where we have no say. I think when anthropologists dig us up 400 years from now--if we make it that far--they're going to say, "Look at these people back then. They thought they were free. They called themselves a democracy, but they spent ten hours of every day in a totalitarian situation and they allowed the richest 1 percent to have more financial wealth than the bottom 95 percent combined."

Lyrics: The paranoia is in bloom, the PR The transmissions will resume They'll try to push drugs Keep us all dumbed down and hope that We will never see the truth around (So come on!) Another promise, another scene, another A package not to keep us trapped in greed With all the green belts wrapped around our minds And endless red tape to keep the truth confined (So come on!) Chorus They will not force us They will stop degrading us They will not control us We will be victorious Interchanging mind control Come let the revolution take its toll if you could Flick the switch and open your third eye, you'd see that We should never be afraid to die (So come on!) Rise up and take the power back, it's time that The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that Their time is coming to an end We have to unify and watch our flag ascend Chorus They will not force us They will stop degrading us They will not control us We will be Victorious

Durga Puja is coming up. Swami Sivananda says: do not sacrifice animals for Devi
enbar
by enbar  9-26-2009
Commentary from Swami Sivananda, founder of the Divine Life society, on the observance of Durga Puja. Traditionally, animal sacrifice has often been a part of the ritual, but Sivananda declares this a violation of the principle of ahimsa, which is binding on all Hindus no matter what caste, jati, or situation they belong to. An interesting example of second-order discourse in contemporary non-Western religion.
