Humans use the technology, not viceversa
jmora
by jmora  12-27-2009
It is very easy to blame the technology on the worst problems of humanity. But technology is only a catalyst, which accelerates and empowers human activity. New weapons enable more lethal wars, new equipments allow saving more lives in hospitals. If new technologies seem to generate new problems it is because of this effect, which transforms something, rendering it at a greater scale and thus noticeable. For those who think otherwise, they have at their disposal may alternatives, as the Amish lifestyle.

Drugging Our Kids to Enrich MDs and Big Pharma
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-14-2009    1
We Americans will do anything for money; outsource our jobs, imprison the poor, rip off our Grannys, militarize our sons, pimp our daughters, drug our kids. We call it capitalism and praise it to the skies. We denigrate, scapegoat and cast out anyone who dares to criticize. More from the article below: ""All these drugs may curb a target symptom slightly more effectively than a placebo does for a short period of time, say six weeks," Whitaker said. However, what "you find with every class of these psychiatric drugs is a worsening of the target symptom of depression or psychosis or anxiety, over the long term, compared to placebo-treated patients." "So even on the target symptoms, there's greater chronicity and greater severity of symptoms," he reports, "And you see a fairly significant percentage of patients where new and more severe psychiatric symptoms are triggered by the drug itself."

How Many Lies Is Enough?
merrie
by merrie  12-5-2009    1
“I intend to take serious steps to reduce America’s long-term deficit because debt-driven growth cannot fuel America’s long-term prosperity.” So what happens when your debts become greater than your assets? You end up like GM and Chrysler - bankrupt. The country will be sold to the highest bidder, just as it is now being sold off to Red China. Cloward-Piven But Obama isn’t concerned with that, in fact, it’s exactly what he wants. Break the bank and redistribute the wealth to those who no longer have any income after the economy has collapsed and the country finds itself in a deep depression - taking much of the free world down with it. That is the Cloward-Piven strategy for the destruction of capitalism and the free market. In September of last year, American Thinker published my article, Barack Obama and the Strategy of Manufactured Crisis. Part of a series, (http://bit.ly/7Cn04V) it connected then-presidential candidate Barack Obama to ....

Eating healthy to fight depression
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-9-2009    3
The connection between physical and mental health seems absolute, so i suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that eating well is not only good for your body, but for your emotional well being too. I don't mean to sound naive or overly simplistic, but if everyone made a commitment to healthier eating and drinking i think it would solve a whole lot of our problems - including bringing down the overall costs of health care. I say this mostly sarcastically, but in some way i feel that people who eat and drink like crap should have to pay higher taxes - there is no doubt their eating habits cause a greater economic burden on society.

From the article this interesting question arises: How could this happen when Washington has thrown trillions of dollars into the pot, including the famous $787 billion in stimulus spending that was supposed to yield $1.50 in growth for every dollar spent?

Stop The Energy Tax Call Your Congressman at the main U.S. House of Representatives Switchboard at 202-224-3121
merrie
by merrie  6-26-2009    1
Main Switchboard at 202-224-3121 U.S. House of Representatives Warren Buffett Opposes the Energy Tax Billionaire investor Warren Buffett supported Barack Obama's Presidential bid last year, and has never been a proponent of major tax cuts. But in an interview today with CNBC, Buffet slammed the new Energy Tax being voted on in Congress this week saying it is a "huge tax" that will "harm an awful lot of people". Warren Buffett Slams Speaker Pelosi's Huge National Energy Tax While Buffett's opposition to this legislation underscores the damage the Energy Tax will do to our economy, you don't have to be a financial wizard to know that a massive tax increase isn't the cure to our ailing economy. In fact, it could turn this recession into the next Great Depression. The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Friday on the new Energy Tax legislation that will cost working families thousands of additional dollars

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy extensively in my work with children, adolescents, and adults. It has, in my experience, made the greatest impact in the shortest possible time in psychotherapy, especially when addressing depression and anxiety issues. Research studies have long provided support for the efficacy of CBT. Here's the latest empirical support.

Primer for Pessimists
Kelika
by Kelika  3-30-2009    1
More: "If you still aren't convinced that your doomsaying ways can ever be changed, consider this: only about 25% of a person's optimism may be hardwired in his genes, according to some studies. That's in contrast to the 40% to 60% heritability of most other personality traits, like agreeableness and conscientiousness. Science suggests that the greater part of an optimistic outlook can be acquired with the right instruction."
