Asking a porno peddler if he thinks introducing young people to porn is a good idea what do you expect him to say, NO? Good grief why don't we ask an overeater if promoting all you can eat buffets is a good idea? How about we ask a serial killer if a website dedicated to how to kill a person and get away with it is a good idea? DUD!!!!!

merrie
by merrie  11-11-2009
"I took all my money out of my pocket. I took off my coat and threw it out the window. I jumped out the window and the police officer brought me to the cafeteria." When asked if he was afraid Zach said: "I was more nervous than afraid." Zach told Rosanna Scotto that he knew about the hand signals from the military. Zach's father is a Marine and his two older brothers are in the Army and currently serving in Iraq. Zach wants to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Marine. In Memory of the Berlin Wall
JackieDel
by JackieDel  11-4-2009
Today, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, 57 percent, or an absolute majority, of eastern Germans defend the former East Germany. "The GDR had more good sides than bad sides. There were some problems, but life was good there," say 49 percent of those polled. Eight percent of eastern Germans flatly oppose all criticism of their former home and agree with the statement: "The GDR had, for the most part, good sides. Life there was happier and better than in reunified Germany today." Something in the water perhaps?

John "the Penguin" Bingham: On whether "slow" runners should be allowed in marathons
Lexica
by Lexica  11-2-2009
More: The Grumpy bar has been pushed back to 4 hours which means, I think, that anyone running UNDER 4 hours is safe from bashing by the new elite. If you extrapolate out it won’t be long before the 5-hour marathoners will be the new elite and they will complain about the slow marathoners. Where will it end? It won’t. As long as there are people who need to use others to feel good about themselves it won’t end. As long as there are people for whom excellence is relative it won’t end. So, I’m not going to worry about it.… Standing at the start line of a marathon – or any race – or any training run – you only have to answer one question; am I prepared to do my best today? And that’s all I have to say about that.

Tea Party Movement's New Target :The GOP

They feel they were had by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), who urged them to stomach earmarks for the good of the party; by George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove, who urged them to stomach a massive expansion of education and Medicare for the good of the party; and by the rest of the Washington gang that collaborated in the largest expansion of government in their lifetime for the good of the party. Erick Erickson, founder and editor of the conservative RedState blog, said grass-roots activists are done listening. “Republicans are going to have to come our way,” he said, before going on to trash NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele for backing Scozzafava. Their “level of disingenuousness ... is disgusting,” Erickson said. His influential blog is now calling for Sessions to get the boot from the NRCC as a penalty for mishandling the race. Erickson’s bombast may seem overboard, but it captures the dep

Good Intentions with Disastrous Effects
billpar
by billpar  10-27-2009
But fraud and corruption are only part of the failed system that is Medicare – the other is basic accounting. In this morning’s Washington Post, Robert J. Samuelson compares the troubles with Medicare to the “public option,” which he calls a “mirage,” that is gaining strength in Congress. While Medicare is a monopoly, the proposed government-run health insurance plan seeks to attract investment capital to subsidize the enormous costs that it will incur (such as marketing campaigns). If this fails, which it undoubtedly would, Congress would step in to bail it out. When asked why it has taken Medicare so long to figure out they were being scammed, Attorney General Eric Holder told CBS’s Steve Kroft, "I think lack of resources probably. And then I think people I don't think necessarily thought that something as well intentioned as Medicare and Medicaid would necessarily attract fraudsters. But I think we have to understand that it certainly has." Good Intentions maybe but...

Magic Numbers in Politics: Part II by Thomas Sowell
merrie
by merrie  10-19-2009    1
Bluntly, it means more severe injuries and death. Many of the same people who protest against "trading blood for oil" when it comes to military interventions in the Middle East seem not to see that higher miles per gallon can also mean trading blood for oil. The magic number du jour is the number of Americans without health insurance. Apparently getting more people insured is another "good thing"-- which is to say, it is something whose costs are not to be weighed against the benefits, or whose costs are to be finessed aside with optimistic projections or a claim that these costs can be covered by eliminating "waste, fraud and abuse." In real life, people weigh one thing against another. But in politics one declares one thing to be imperative, so the issue then becomes how we do it. In real life, all sorts of desirable things are not done, either because of other desirable things that would have to be sacrificed to do it or because of the dangers incurred .

Obama Administration and Medical Marijuana
iulawboy

Good to see some progress on this issue. I think that, given current law, this policy strikes a good balance. It recognizes that recreational use of marijuana is illegal but that there are medicinal benefits of using this drug that should not be ignored. We don't allow recreational use of morphine, but we don't deny that the drug is useful. We can at least do that for pot.
