Eating healthy to fight depression
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-9-2009    3
The connection between physical and mental health seems absolute, so i suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that eating well is not only good for your body, but for your emotional well being too. I don't mean to sound naive or overly simplistic, but if everyone made a commitment to healthier eating and drinking i think it would solve a whole lot of our problems - including bringing down the overall costs of health care. I say this mostly sarcastically, but in some way i feel that people who eat and drink like crap should have to pay higher taxes - there is no doubt their eating habits cause a greater economic burden on society.

Healthy eaters putting wild fish stocks at risk
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-9-2009    4
In order for fish to properly produce the desired omega-3 fatty acids they need to eat other wild fish. Raising fish in farms, essentially hand feeding them, does not allow fish to produce the desired healthy properties for which fish are valued. Herbaceous fish, such as tilapia, carp and trout are fed fishmeal and oil solely to increase their yields. These fish are beneficial to humans without the further depletion of wild fish. So what you say? This practice places an unnecessary strain on already over fished wildlife and unfavorably affects the price of fish. Farm fish do not taste as good as wild fish, they are not as healthy for us as wild fish and they are endangering wild fish habits wherever farm fisheries are built. This article on Salmon fisheries should get your attention: http://www.farmedanddangerous.org/news/148

Teaching kids to cook
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  12-21-2008    1
I love having my daughter help in the kitchen. (I also secretly love showing her the effort and the love that goes into creating a meal for the family. It doesn't magically appear, you know). She can make a salad by herself now. I even let her use the sharp knife (at 5!). I might be crazy. She is getting her own cookbook for Christmas. Sometimes it is hard for me to let go of my presentation perfectionism and just let her do it as well as she can. I have big plans for her to make a whole meal herself. I'll let you know how that goes. Hahahaha.

I do hope that the whole organization that is built to monitor the Restaurant Menus will include a cast of thousands. Just how many restaurants are there in Kaleeforniay? What is the penalty for posting incorrect carbohydrates? Can it be possible that civilization has existed for thousands of years without sodium content reporting requirements?

Unhealthy Eating Habits, the thinner side.
Rioting Drone
by Rioting Drone  8-13-2007    1
I understand eating disorders. In fact, if I didn't watch how much I ate, I would be a whale of a man. I currently weigh about 210 pounds with about 18 percent body fat (which isn't good, but it isn't too bad either). I am just shy of six foot one. I don't feel I have to loose weight, but I know if I were to eat like i used to (pushed almost 280 @ 25 to 28 percent body fat) I would be putting my self at risk for health problems. I guess moderation is the key. I enjoy the taste of food too much. And I eat when ever I am depressed. One of these is an emotional reaction, one that I can avoid. I guess knowing who you are helps in combating the problems. But then again, I know a crap ton of Americans that could go without eating for a few weeks (and yes I know not eating is just as bad, its just a general statement at the situation of obesity).
