A second chance at life, thanks to strangers on a train
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
More: Mr. Medaglia and Dr. Tolani rode the subway downtown together… He’d missed the 5:13 train and while he was waiting at Penn Station for the 5:59, a woman came up and said, “You did the CPR on that guy, is he really going to live?” “I said I think so,” recalled Mr. Medaglia. “She blew me a kiss. She said, ‘God bless you — you did a great thing.’ I just sat on the train home, thinking, ‘Holy Jesus.’ ” …This was Lieutenant Kelly’s fourth CPR call in 13 years. The three other aideds all died. “Best thing I ever did in my life,” he said… Having gotten a second chance, Mr. Kiernan, a lifelong bachelor, said he is trying to be a better partner to his longtime girlfriend and is trying to eat more carefully, drink less, and seize each day a little more. “I’m not religious,” he said, “but I keep thinking, ‘Who put that cardiologist on the train?’ Coming home tonight, I looked around the subway car — there wasn’t anybody who looked like a cardiologist.”

Managing Distraction
Kelika
by Kelika  11-1-2009
more: "Surfing or multitasking may have even more of a place in 21st-century society as strategies of learning," says Jackson. "But going forward, we need to do much more than hopscotch across the web, split-focused and pulled this way and that by choice distractions. We cannot mistake fragmented, diffused attention as avenues of higher thought-or deeper relationships." "Instead, we need to do better at cultivating deep focus, keen awareness and meta-cognitive "executive" attention-the package of skills that is crucial to moving forward in a complex, high-tech age," says Jackson. "If we can 'green' the earth, we can clean up our noisy, interrupt-driven environment, and set the stage for a renaissance of attention for all."

Walmart Caskets: Buy Your Final Resting Place Online
disenchantedcitizen

If you are going to buy one of these things it would be a good idea to find out who makes it (is it American made or did it come from China). You wouldn’t want it to fall apart on you. Not that you would know. Which invites shoddy workmanship, because after all it only needs to hold together until it’s in the ground. Autumn is Apple Time
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-14-2009    3
Early varieties include the classic Red Delicious, which are striped to solid and red, and have a sweet taste; and the Jonagold, a cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious, and are bright red and can be sweet or slightly tart. Later varieties include Rome, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Jonathan. Romes are a deep red and are slightly sweet. Fuji’s range in color from gold to red and often have red striping, and are great for snacking. Granny Smith apples are green, tart apples that are perfect for baking. Jonathans have light red stripes over deep red or yellow and are slightly tart. For a quick and easy simmered fall punch, combine 2 cups apple juice, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 2 or 3 cloves. Simmer on the stove for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove cloves before serving. ---------------------------

recipe: Clean-out-the-fridge frittata
Lexica
by Lexica  9-27-2009    2
More: This particular frittata got wrapped up and taken to Seward Park for a dinner picnic, which is almost as good an idea as Clean Out the Fridge Frittata. Imagine a dinner party where you invite all the interesting people you don’t see nearly enough, but with the added benefit of not having to clean your house. It’s genius, I tell you. Throw in some blankets, some grapes, salad, bread, cheese, a bottle of wine, and cookies or cupcakes (or in our case, both!) and you have the makings of a very fine evening indeed. IMG_1674 As an extra bonus, when at last it gets dark and you have to pull yourself away from the park and your friends, you’ll have a much cleaner fridge to come home to. I'm my world, that's never a bad thing.

Remember When?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-30-2009    10
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties. It was unbelievable that dodgeball wasn't an Olympic event. Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better. Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin. Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare." If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!!! Didn't that feel good? Just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that!" Here's another blast from the past. Do you remember? .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CR8DMFfFs8

Understanding Government Subsidies
sahara
by sahara  9-24-2009    1
There are many people who will rally behind "socialized" oil, but read on: Hidden Oil Subsidies The real price of gasoline is what people actually pay for it, not just what they pay for it at the pump. That might seem subtle, but there's a big difference. The Cato Institute, a libertarian think-thank, did a study on the subject. What they found is simply mind-boggling. They calculated that the US spent between $30 to $60 billion (with a 'b') a year safeguarding oil supplies in the Middle East during the 1990s, even though its imports from that region totaled only about $10 billion a year during that period. A more comprehensive study that includes the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and other oil protection services (the coast guard is clearing shipping lanes and doing navigational support to oil tankers, etc) shows that actual subsidies to Big Oil are between $78 to $158 billion (again, with a 'b') per year.

Are Earlobe Creases a Sign of Heart Disease?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-16-2009    1
Why a connection between ELC and heart disease? Nobody knows. We continue with our checklist of heart disease signs: Retinopathy. Ring finger length. - A short ring finger in males = lower level of testosterone = higher risk of heart attack early in life. Male pattern baldness - men with frontal baldness were about 9 percent more likely to have heart disease. Those with baldness at the crown (top) of their heads were 23 to 36 percent more likely. Bad breath - Some studies claim people with lots of antibodies due to bum gums have a 50 to 100 percent greater chance of heart disease. Acne - men who had acne as teenagers had a 30 percent lower chance. Green snot - there's a connection between heart disease and green snot. Earwax - Dry earwaxers had a greater risk of arteriosclerosis than wet earwaxers. (Unconfirmed, but if you're going to worry about snot and bad breath, you might as well worry about earwax, too. )

Instead Watch My Top Picks
debbyski
by debbyski  1-25-2008    6
Ok, I'm not a lesbian, but I'm not exactly heterosexual either. So watch my top picks in this particular genre because I'm right half the time :D 1. Fried Green Tomatoes Unfortunately the movie version has been "sanitized" to attract the heterosexual audience. Even though it fills my emotional cache I still wish they would have had the guts to lift it above that level, but I'm a sucker for the southern accent. 2. Aimee and Jaguar This movie is huge in it's structure and huge in it's emotion. AND it's based on a true story. It's great love in times that make love seem impossible. 3. Loving Annabelle. OK, so it's a sexy, cheesy, student/teacher, kinda disturbing love affair with Simone stuck in a loveless affair with a man (of course). I'd watch it again just for the music though. 4. But I'm a Cheerleader. This boot camp is so absurd that it's funny. And the moral of this review is that I cannot come up with 5 good lesbian movies. What a shame.

Californian Condors In Peril

by celestialdancer  9-12-2009
This is so like what is happening here, though, our wildlife is not quite as endangered as the condors. What magnificent and majestic creatures, what a pity to lose them!!! :-( So Tejon Ranch Company developed an elaborate smokescreen and called it “Tejon Preserve.” And, in order to keep the “incidental take” issue quiet while they concocted their “Habitat Conservation Plan”, TRC filed a protective order with its own lawsuit. Then, last month, in a clever PR move, TRC announced the lifting of the protective order. Tejon Ranch Company is asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Department of Justice to support its efforts to have a U.S. District Court vacate a Protective Order issued to maintain the confidential nature of settlement negotiations between the Tejon Ranch and the FWS over a federal lawsuit filed by the Ranch in 1997. As a result of the settlement, for the past ten years Tejon Ranch has been working with FWS toward completion of an H

Organs For Health Care

and I don’t want to spend the rest of my career waste-deep in a tub of hybrid vehicle battery acid. I just want to note a major beneficial aspect of the one-party autocracy system that Friedman left out. The work camps for political prisoners. Not only would they be a great place to throw angry peasants and annoying right-wing talk show hosts, shutting them up and making them a useful source of cheap labor for jobs that undocumented comrades don’t want to do, like working in vats full of whatever chemicals they need to make all the ”green” stuff. But the government also could sell their organs to help pay for universal health care. There, that’s my idea.

. . . . . really owes the White House an apology. This airbrushing was worthy of Stalin. Other NRO commenters at the link admire the assist the Politburo has gotten from the state-controlled media. The Moderate Voice : A case of poor vetting … Funny, that’s how I feel about the Obama administration, too. Aww, this is cute. Fellow-traveling Think Progress , wielding an airbrushlet: Racist right-wing conspiracy/hate campaign drives out smiling, well-intentioned, plucky environmental advocate. It’s an interesting presentation that makes no mention of you know what. Andrew Sullivan, to his credit, notices why Van was hounded out, but finds the gleefulness unseemly. Gutless wonder of a conspiracy theorist quits gutless wonder of a White House in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Labor Day weekend. Good work, Rahm. It’ll be out of the papers by Tuesday. Given that the Van Jones Truther scandal was barely covered in the first place, it’s like it never happened

But let’s look at his parting shot and, as they say in the streets of middle America, break it down. 1. opponents of reform There’s a loaded phrase, eh? Because the key word here is reform. By that can we assume he meant the changing of the “whole system” from the ground up? “We gonna change the whole thang.” By reform is he talking about changing our existing American system of government to bypass elected officials almost entirely by appointing czars surreptitiously, for the very purpose of avoiding any usual vetting process? Is he referring to the dismantling of our Capitalistic society in order to “give” jobs to the “chronically unemployed?” Are black people currently prevented from going to school? Prevented from applying for jobs? Doing the work of building this hallowed new system of gleaming clean energy? 2. vicious smear campaign Here he is most likely referring to Glenn Beck and Fox News, for having the journalistic sensibility to

Crazy Conspiracy Theorism Disavowed

The evidence that President Obama's "Green Jobs Czar" is a total radical continues to grow. Gateway Pundit is now reporting that Van Jones in addition to having said he was a communist in the past, also signed onto the radical 9/11 "Truther" statement. "Truthers" believe President George W. Bush and the U.S. Government were responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States, or at the least had foreknowledge and did nothing to try and stop it. Below you see the image of Jones' name listed among 100 prominent Americans who had signed onto the statement. Growth of Ocean ‘Garbage Patch’ Alarms Experts
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-28-2009
Nope, it’s not going away. It’s the smallest pieces that are of most concern, the “bite-sized” pieces that are interacting with the food chain: bottlecaps, bags and wrappers. Plastic sea trash doesn't biodegrade and often floats at the surface, coming from overflowing sewage systems and then drift thousands of miles. The sheer quantity of plastic that accumulates in the North Pacific Gyre, a vortex formed by ocean and wind currents and located 1,000 miles off the California coast, has the scientists worried about how it might harm the sea creatures there. Plastics have entangled birds and turned up in the bellies of fish, and one paper cited by the NOAA estimates 100,000 marine mammals die trash-related deaths each year. Only humans are to blame for ocean debris. Only humans can do something about it.
