Avoid Genetically Modified Organisms - Why? How.
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  12-6-2009
The why for me is simple. 1. GMO enables humans to rapidly alter an eco-system by introducing a new plant, insect, microbe, or animal population in large scales. When nature - the large system - senses over-population within any sub-system, it assumes something is wrong; out of balance. That triggers a reaction to restore balance, most often with what we call a disease, unintended consequence, or predator that acts to restore the balance. Humans make believe we are smarter than nature and can always "outsmart" nature. 2. GMO is dramatically different from traditional means of creating hybrids. Traditional creation of new hybrids takes enough time to see if unintended negative consequences were missed and enough time for the natural system to not over-react to a perceived imbalance.

GMO FRANKENFOOD Nightmare.
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  11-18-2009    1
Monsanto has been suing and winning in the courts against farmers who "stole" GMO technology when the GMO pollen contaminated the farmer's non-GMO crops. Now that they are creating super-weeds resistant to toxic chemicals like Roundup, and spreading around through contamination, should they not be subject to the same standards? They should be reimbursing the farmers for infesting their crops with weeds. If there are any more small family farms left, that is. Farmers!!!! Rise up and take back your farms.

Asylum for those who push GM food and us from them
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-1-2009
GM food sounds so attractive until you think about this: Is Monsanto, Bayer, or whomever big corp thinking first about 1. their profit; 2. people's health; 3. dangers to the environment; 4. making crops and farmers more susceptible to crop collapse due to unforeseen or unintended consequences. Who did not vote for #1 as their first priority? What works best for profit is to plant all the same crop - right. What works best for a new insect, fungus, or bacteria - humans plant all the same crop.

Politics of the Plate
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-16-2009
Prices paid to farmers per hundredweight (about 12 gallons) have fallen from nearly $20 a year ago to less than $11 in June. It costs a farmer about $18 to produce a hundredweight of milk. In Vermont that translates to a loss of $100 per cow per month. So far this year, 33 farms have ceased operation in this one tiny state. Meanwhile, the price you and I pay for milk in the grocery store has stayed about the same. Someone is clearly pocketing the difference. Perhaps that explains why profits at Dean Foods—the nation’s largest processor and shipper of dairy products, with more than 50 regional brands—have skyrocketed to more than double the same time last year. We are losing our heritage farms and in the process we are losing a large part of the character of what it means to be a self-sufficient and independent American. Corporate farming and govt subsidies are the biggest causes in this loss and NAFTA and the spread of GMO food products are the driving forces.

Something as basic as seed to grow food, the very substance of life, necessary for the survival of every person, should not in any way be controlled by any corporation or individual. Patents for the control of plant seed is a crime against humanity designed to gain ownership of life itself.

If you don't remember or were not taught that local greens are good food, you could go hungry because you couldn't afford cabbage or spinach. Kenyan scientist rediscovers good greens native to Kenya's environment. Guess they don't need those GMO beans fro India and USA after all! Wonder in how many formerly colonized nations where hunger is common that native foods have just been fogotten or overlooked?

GMO's : An Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-16-2009    11
This is a must read. The scientists behind this appeal, the reasons and dangers of GMO's are all summed up at the source, but especially this bit is quite frightening: 2. It is becoming increasingly clear that the current GM crops are neither needed nor beneficial. They are a dangerous diversion from the real task of providing food and health around the world. Too many instances of rogue scientists having been discovered altering the structure of seeds in order to carry disease, which can and probably are targeting the human race. We see this as inevitable and nothing short of BIO-WAR in our food.

Sign the Petition to Ask Congress to Defeat HR 2749
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  7-11-2009
"What is missing in pointing out this astounding control, is that it opens the door to CODEX and WTO "good farming practices" will include the elimination of organic farming by eliminating manure, mandating GMO animal feed, imposing animal drugs, and ordering applications of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers, thus, will be locked not only into the industrialization of once normal and organic farms but into the forced purchase of industry's products. They will be slaves on the land, doing the work they are ordered to do - against their own best wisdom - and paying out to industry against their will. There will be no way to be frugal, to grow one's own grain to feed the animals, to raise healthy animals without GMO grains or drugs, to work with nature at all. Grassfed cattle and poultry and hogs will be finished. So, it needs to be made clear where control will take us. And weren't these the "rumors on the internet" that were dismissed but are clearly the case?"

Profit & Privatizing vs Survival
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  7-8-2009
If some firms have their way, they could claim ownership of the more than 2,000 varieties of potatoes and then genetically modify them for profit, thereby shutting off the Peruvian people who share their knowledge and assure survival of all varieties. The same scenario is being fought over corn. Should Monsanto and Conagra "own" food genes developed by nature?

Are Your Supermarket Plums Genetically Modified?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  6-15-2009    2
Of course, this tip works not only for plums but for just about any fruit or vegetable in the fresh produce section. Nearly all of these foods are GM so it is wise to avoid them: • Soy • Corn • Cottonseed • Canola It would also be wise to limit products made from these ingredients, such as vegetable oils, maltodextrin and high-fructose corn syrup. In fact, because corn and soy are so widely used in processed foods, at least 70 percent of the processed foods at your supermarket contain GM ingredients. That’s seven out of every 10 products. Other GMO products include: • Some varieties of zucchini, crookneck squash, and papayas from Hawaii • Milk containing rbGH • Rennet (containing genetically modified enzymes) used to make hard cheeses • Aspartame (NutraSweet)

Mahesh Bhatt presents: Poison on the Platter
WIDEEYECINEMA
by WIDEEYECINEMA  4-23-2009
“Poison on the Platter”, is an eye-opening film, made by Mahesh Bhatt and Ajay Kanchan, illustrating how all of our lives are gonna be (adversely) affected by genetically modified foods. It is no more a farmer’s issue alone, it’s a matter of the consumers’ right to food safety. You and I wouldn’t even be able to separate/choose a normal Brinjal from/over a GM one, if Bt Brinjal - a GM crop produced by the mighty agri-MNC Monsanto - is let through by our corrupt regulatory body. Let’s put up strong resistance, demanding a ban on GM food/crops for 5 years, until they are proven safe for human consumption by independent, long-term studies.
