Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina
amgumen
by amgumen  7-11-2008
There is a news report quoting one of the most important experts in the glacier that has the following headline: "The Perito Moreno rupture is not consequence of greenhouse effect: "Ricardo Villalba, director of the Argentinean Institute of Glaciology, Snow and Enviromental Sciences (Ianigla) tells Los Andes newspaper that the position of the ice and the tides can be blamed for this unusual breakup in the winter."

Climate Democracy
merrie
by merrie  7-10-2008    2
The point is fundamental. Whether warming or cooling is beneficial depends largely on where you live. Federal control of climate is therefore inappropriate. International control, even worse. Climate democracy requires local control. If the political discussion remains national during this election season, the candidates should – at the very least – choose vice presidential running mates who favor warming: at least acknowledging that the north matters. Local climate control: how can it be done? - the facts are these. To say that climate engineering is in a pre-early stage of development is a vast understatement. There is no such thing. Governments can no more control climate globally than they can locally. We have a long, long way to go technologically before any such thing as climate democracy can become reality. Wake up and smell the crap – it’s a scam! They want to raise taxes and increase government control over earthly endeavors and you won’t get anything for it in return.

pokkets
by pokkets  7-10-2008
The article clipped was written on Tue 8 jul. The bridge collapsed around 1120am local time on Wednesday. This site has some more pictures. http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90781/90879/6446698.html The bridge is part of a glacier, that has been known to collapse in summer, and refreeze in winter. Now it is collapsing in what is the middle of the southern hemispheres winter. There is a link in the clip to live footage of the bridge. The site with the video is in spanish and the link in the article does not lead directly to the video, but there is the option to view the site in English

A Novel Bacterial Species Is Found Trapped In 120,000-year-old Ice
Mohir
by Mohir  6-3-2008
The ultra-small size of the new species could be one explanation for why it was able to survive for so long in the Greenland glacier. Called Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, the species is related genetically to certain bacteria found in fish, marine mud, and the roots of some plants. The organism is one of only about 10 scientifically described new species originating from polar ice and glaciers.

Birds and bees acting up with climate change
pokkets
by pokkets  5-14-2008
Due to space, I have only included a few examples, but there are more details of changes throughout the world on the page. It seems ironic that we can be prepared to cast blame, while ignoring the problem. Nature will not be ignored. I remember an old Japanese saying "Do not look for blame. Look for solution." Then of course there was King Canute. Despite his authority over people the tide continued to rise. The worst thing we can do is give up. We can't argue with the elements, much less change them. We have to change our behavior. Reminds me of dieting. It is not a short term thing. For dieting to be successful, it has to be a permanent change in eating habits. Very soon, with the correct diet, the improvement in health can make us wonder why we ever ate incorrectly in the first place. Also similar to things like stopping smoking, or drinking Alcohol. They only seem hard until you become determined to stop. Then it's not long before the benefits become clear.

1941 National Park Service Photo Mural
alanocu
by alanocu  5-1-2008    4
"In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned noted photographer Ansel Adams to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The theme was to be nature as exemplified and protected in the U.S. National Parks. The project was halted because of World War II and never resumed." I included the entire set, so the clip is REALLY long. - you may want to view when you have more time. At the source page, you can download any of these photos in much higher resolution. I scaled them all to 500 px wide for the clipmark.

Hundreds Get Naked on Glacier in Switzerland
eikah
by eikah  8-20-2007
Nearly 600 volunteers stripped before the camera on a melting Swiss glacier high in the Alps on Saturday as part of a publicity campaign to expose the impact of climate change. The eco-conscious volunteers turned up under blue skies near the foot of the Aletsch glacier, a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. Environmental group Greenpeace commissioned the photo shoot from world renowned photographer Spencer Tunick. "Their numbers are close to 600," Nicolas de Roten of Greenpeace Switzerland told AFP. "It's relatively chilly but that doesn't seem to be disturbing them." The campaign is aimed at drawing attention to melting Alpine glaciers, one clear sign of global warming and of man-made climate change, according to the group. Greenpeace says the human body is as fragile as glaciers like the Aletsch in southern Switzerland and the world's environment. The glacier itself is now shrinking by about 100 metres (110 yards) a year.
