Deep-Sea Volcano Seen By Scientists For First Time
ratilfar
by ratilfar  12-18-2009    2
The eruption was a spectacular sight: Bright-red lava bubbles shot out of the volcano, releasing a smoke-like cloud of sulfur. The lava froze almost instantly as it hit the cold sea water, causing black rock to sink to the sea floor. The submersible hovered near the blasts, its robotic arm reaching into the lava to collect samples. Earth and ocean scientists said the eruption allowed them to see for the first time the creation of a material called boninite, which had previously been found only in samples at least a million years old.

GIANT Crystals!
ouyangwulong

Uh, yeah, I know, it's a stupid title and I normally have something more cerebral to say, but this is just plain cool. I wonder what could possibly explain my fascination with these crystals?

Meet The Man Who Has Exposed the Great Climate Change Con Trick
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    3
What Heaven And Earth sets out to do is restore a sense of scientific perspective to a debate which has been hijacked by ‘politicians, environmental activists and opportunists’. It points out, for example, that polar ice has been present on earth for less than 20 per cent of geological time; that extinctions of life are normal; that climate changes are cyclical and random; that the CO2 in the atmosphere " to which human activity contributes the tiniest fraction " is only 0.001 per cent of the total CO2 held in the oceans, surface rocks, air, soils and life; that CO2 is not a pollutant but a plant food; that the earth’s warmer periods " such as when the Romans grew grapes and citrus trees as far north as Hadrian’s Wall " were times of wealth and plenty. All this is scientific fact " which is more than you can say for any of the computer models turning out doomsday scenarios about inexorably rising temperatures, sinking islands and collapsing ice shelves.

New York City built on 542 million year old natural crystal fiber optics?
Koheli
by Koheli  8-9-2009    1
Interesting to contemplate that one possibly far-fetched but not totally improbable idea is that New York in particular became the “epicenter of communication” it is today because of this naturally occurring rich lattice work of crystalline rock

Hydrocarbons in Deep Earth
amgumen
by amgumen  7-31-2009
“We were intrigued by previous experiments and theoretical predictions,” remarked Carnegie’s Alexander Goncharov a coauthor. “Experiments reported some years ago subjected methane to high pressures and temperatures and found that heavier hydrocarbons formed from methane under very similar pressure and temperature conditions. However, the molecules could not be identified and a distribution was likely. We overcame this problem with our improved laser-heating technique where we could cook larger volumes more uniformly. And we found that methane can be produced from ethane.”

The World's Richest and Most Extensive Marine Bone Deposit
amgumen
by amgumen  6-20-2009    1
These animals were dying over the whole area, but no sediment deposition was going on, possibly related to rising sea levels that snuffed out silt and sand deposition or restricted it to the very near-shore environment
