Psychology, Sociology most politically correct fields
jklugman
by jklugman  Yesterday 3:30 PM    1
The first thing that Simmons does in the study with the database — which covers a range of disciplines and institution types — is to identify a politically correct cohort, reflecting largely common views on a set of issues that are seen as defining political correctness. He finds a set of issues that produce this cohort. The views are the belief that gender gaps in math and science fields are largely due to discrimination; support for affirmative action; and belief that discrimination is a key cause of racial inequities in American society. Generally, members of this cohort see race and gender as fundamental — and share that belief much more than beliefs about the curriculum or scholarship, such that the study says that “multiculturalism trumps postmodernism.” Via Tyler Cowen

Girls Score Just as Well as Boys in Math Tests
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  7-24-2008
My daughter used to complain that her high school math teacher would often call on a boy to answer a question than call on her when she had her hand raised in class. She knew nothing of the stereotype that females are not as good as males in math. She lived it. Follow the link and read the entire article for further interesting findings.

X, Y, Z of genders :)
balthazarus

Professor Carey Cooper, a psychologist who specialises in sex differences at Lancaster University, said: "It is probably a combination of the genetics and hard wiring of the brain together with the social imprinting of gender that has led to the behavioural differences we now see between men and women."

Crickets eat junk food! Maybe it's a matter of 'learning' to eat well. (good habits?) Often it can be a case of what is available, or easy to get, rather than what is good and nutritious. Sometimes a small change in diet can lead to a marked improvement in an aspect of the health of the consumer. Generally alongside overall improvement. A 'diet' doesn't have to be a revolution. It can be a replacement of a preference that is unhealthy, with one that is healthy. (Of course that's easy to write)

Men and women are programmed differently when it comes to temptation
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-15-2008    2
"One interpretation of these studies is that men are unable to ward off temptation. We do not subscribe to this. Instead, we believe men simply interpret these interactions differently than women do," said Lydon. "We think that if men believed an attractive, available woman was a threat to their relationship, they might try to protect that relationship."

Sales Workers Top Employees in Distress
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  7-14-2008
Workers in sales, those putting in 60 hours or more per week and those with jobs considered untraditional for their genders had the highest rates of psychological distress, according to a new study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The study, which surveyed more than 60,000 Australian workers at 58 different companies, measured distress by asking questions about how often people felt sad, nervous, hopeless etc. Overall, the study shows that there's a high rate of psychological distress among workers. It's hard to know if this is a growing problem or one we've just become more recently aware of but it shows that a lot more people than you might expect aren't coping well with the daily grind.

Gender difference real or fiction?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-12-2008    1
In search of bridges across the math gender gap, Sapienza and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 276,000 children in 40 countries. The large number of subjects and broad range of social systems represented were key to the validity of the study. Each child took the 2003 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), an internationally standardized assessment of math, reading, science and problem-solving ability. The team used four tools to measure how well women were integrated into each society compared with men. These tools were the 2006 Gender Gap Index (GGI) developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Women
dulios
by dulios  7-9-2008    2
With the horror of the recent "honor" killing in Georgia as the backdrop, I'm inspired to remind everyone that women die at the hands of male family members every day in the US. In fact, 4 times a day. I'm tired of the Right acting like they really care about women and gender equality. The only mention of women in the 2004 Republican platform is their insistence that if a woman gets pregnant, by law she'll stay that way until delivery. I went to a number of right wing websites and typed the words "violence against women" into their search engines. If any stories were listed at all, they were about honor killings in the Muslim world. The Right wrap their "concern" for women in the cloak of anti-Islamic rhetoric concerning honor killings and are dumb, deaf, and blind to all else. Enough. Islam is not the problem. Patriarchy is.
