POPSSept. 9, 1982: The First Private Rocket Launch More than a generation before the X Prize spurred billionaires to put up 10 times a $10 million purse to pursue scientific and technological achievements that have eluded even governments with limitless resources, this was a shot heard ’round the world. It was fired by people who weren’t out to invent anything — they just wanted to prove that you didn’t need a massive space program to power something into space.

POPSConversation starter: gambling with followers
I think it's a really interesting topic. But also a fine topic to get an idea of today's online discussion. I wonder if and how many comments this article gets. And what does that say? That we care? Or do we consume daily news as we consume our bread: thoughtless? Is 'what's new and interesting' determined by our own followers, or do we still rely on well known sources; sites and bloggers with the most followers? In that respect, it makes sense to question the 'currency' of 'followers'. And there's another thing: the intruiging Power of Numbers. Weight. Mass. Depth. As the makers of Bet Your Followers wrote: "we’ve watched the race to accrue followers become a strange obsession." The search for followers may stand for the archetypical desire to gather an army to conquer the world, or to build a stronghold to hide behind. If so, a game like Bet Your Followers may well be the start of a new kind of online strategic games, with a highly realistic touch. Speaking about sh

POPSWhy Facebook Won't Listen! This is one of the best written articles I have ever read. If I am understanding it correctly, FB really doesn't care about "we the little people" because they are making billions...and in the long run, the owner of a prosperous company does what is best for the company. Period. I'm supposing there simply are not enough petitions I can sign saying how bad FB sucks right now cause I can't "find all my stuff" anymore - so I better just quit whining about it.

POPSThe greener option - burial or cremation.... two new technologies have eco-geeks (not to mention sci-fi fans) excited. The process of alkaline hydrolysis involves liquefying your body in a solution of lye and water, resulting in a pile of bone ash and a bottle of biofluid that you can pour on your houseplants. One of its leading proponents, a Scotland-based company called Resomation Ltd., claims that the procedure has a carbon footprint 18 times smaller than a typical cremator. In the other procedure, called promession, a corpse gets freeze-dried with liquid nitrogen and then shattered into powder, Terminator-style. Neither of these options is commercially available yet, but both the Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida use alkaline hydrolysis to dispose of their teaching cadavers

POPSUS Spy Flies to gain new eyes Techno geeks continue to make it easier to spy on and congratulate themselves for making spy tools smaller and more efficient. Politicians enable warrantless wiretapping to be more legally acceptable. They feign outrage but don’t punish those who authorized and instigated spying on us. The NSA spy-fest during the Bush administration was met with outrage by the press (for a very sort time) but nothing has come of it. Are they still spying on us? The police state grows because, let’s face it, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of resistance. Local police kick and beat suspects, boldly in front of cameras, and they are cleared of any wrong doing, which just emboldens them even further. Bloggers and citizen reporters are the only real sources of what is actually happening to us because the MSM is so concerned with keeping their ad income that true investigative reporting is all but dead. If somehow the internet gets shutdown, we will truly be in the dark.

POPSWhy Geeks & Nerds Are Worth It
3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends. 4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too. 5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing? 6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend. 7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this

POPSEU kills "3-strikes" Internet rule, affirms Internet is a fundamental right After a last-minute scramble, the EU has been persuaded to kill the idea of forcing "3-strikes" copyright/internet legislation on European states. The "3-strikes" rule says that you can have your Internet connection taken away after a copyright holder accuses you of infringement three times -- but the rightsholder doesn't need to show any evidence that you've done anything wrong.

POPSThe sink faucet for geeks.... Is nothing sacred anymore? My first response to this was, "you've got to be kidding me, how pointless"... But then the more I thought about it, the more I thought it was quite genius! If you think about it, most people spend a decent amount of time in front of their faucet throughout the day. Wether brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands you can now check email or the weather while doing any of those without bringing your laptop with. Now if they could just make it know when I want to brush my teeth vs wash my hands so I never have to adjust the temperature at all! Check out the source for a vid, though it's not english you still get to see it in action.

POPSSteve Rubel says Twitter is peaking Steve makes a number of good points in this post. I find it hard to imagine that a platform that limits all communication to 140 characters can sustain the type of growth that twitter is currently enjoying. In some macro sense, that just wouldn't make sense. They have been brilliant in their simplicity, but after a while, i just don't see how people don't get board and frustrated by the limitation.
