Talking of USA, it is one country that significantly increased its post-independence size through purchase of land from Russia, France, Mexico, Denmark etc. It must have made the most profitable land deal in history when it purchased Alaska from Russia at a little over 7 million dollars in 1867, which comes to about $10 per sq. mile (2 cents per acre). Just imagine that Alaska accounts for 20% of total oil production in USA, not to speak of the huge reserves of natural gas, and mineral resources like coal, gold, zinc etc. and you will appreciate the magnitude of the bargain!

Facts About US Energy
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  11-9-2009
How long are we going to allow our government to prohibit us from accessing our OWN ENERGY? Heck all this talk about the economy and yet we let billions and billions of dollars sit in the ground while we ship our money to other countries to buy their resources that they are more than happy to sell. WAKE UP AMERICA before we are all living in the DARK LITERALLY!

Former UK Ambassador: CIA Sent People to be ‘Raped with Broken Bottles’
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-7-2009
Murray alleged that in the late 1990s the Uzbek ambassador to the US met with then-Texas Governor George W. Bush to discuss a pipeline for the region, and out of that meeting came agreements that would see Texas-based Enron gain the rights to Uzbekistan's natural gas deposits, while oil company Unocal worked on developing the Trans-Afghanistan pipeline. "The consultant who was organizing this for Unocal was a certain Mr. Karzai, who is now president of Afghanistan," Murray noted. "There are designs of this pipeline, and if you look at the deployment of US forces in Afghanistan, as against other NATO country forces in Afghanistan, you'll see that undoubtedly the US forces are positioned to guard the pipeline route. It's what it's about. It's about money, it's about oil, it's not about democracy."

The reason the UK is in such a precarious position is that energy policy is a short term political football. It always has been, e.g. Thatcher vs. the miners.

Let Them Eat Dirt
merrie
by merrie  4-21-2009    5
from the report. But the mainstream media did not report these conflicts and instead piled on the "global warming" and "carbon offset" bandwagons. The carbon offset market quickly exploded. In fact, $92 billion worth of offsets were estimated to change hands in 2008. But wanton profiteering appears to be the sole rationale for "carbon trading". Put simply, a wide range of respected scientists, environmentalists, researchers, agriculturalists, and activists believe that carbon offsets are a "scam", "fantasy", "fiction", "nonsense", "fraudulent" and worse. And they've been saying so since 2000, though to read the newspaper you wouldn't know it. The World Rainforest Movement, for example, investigated these bizarre financial ties and concluded that the IPCC report must "...be shelved due to their clear conflict of interest and a new report instigated which will be free of the taint of intellectual corruption."

Well...so much for resource conservation You'd think some one of those Russian scientists would be able to figure out a way to extinguish the darn thing, but maybe they just don't care. 35 years burning endlessly is an awful waste I must say. Any combustible gas can be converted into a useful resource.

By reducing the amount of the potent greenhouse gas released into the air, the projects also potentially could turn cow dung into dollars, if a climate bill before Congress becomes law. "Agriculture and agribusiness is what Greeley is all about," Biggi said. "We needed to take that strong traditional economic base and ... merge it with emerging renewable energy and technology." Waste may be the new energy crop in these parts. But elsewhere, communities are looking anew at power sources such as the sun and wind that may exist in their own backyards.

OIL: The Real Purpose for the Afghanistan War and Af-Pak Policy
blueridge
by blueridge  10-17-2009    2
It's not about "terrorism" but an oil pipeline from the Caspian region to Pakistan, thru Afghanistan. The proof is that the invasion was planned before Sept. 11th! This fact should be sufficient to establish Motive, should it not? Now you know why the Taliban and bin Laden got fingered for 9/11, instead of Saudi hijackers, etc. "It's not going to be built until there is a single Afghan government. That's the simple answer." Bush began war in the region in Oct. 2001. May 2002 the BBC reported the immediate result The leaders of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan have agreed to construct a $2bn pipeline to bring gas from Central Asia to the sub-continent . Now look at this map of Military and Oil .
