BBC opens world's biggest online zoo
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-29-2009    6
more: Starting with 370 animals, including four octopuses and a solitary starfish, the databank of clips and still pictures will be reinforced on a daily basis. BBC staff are combing through hundreds of wildlife programmes, from spectaculars such as Planet Earth to regional TV news items, to create an unprecedented collection. Early stars in terms of hits online include Darwin's frog, a tiny resident of forests in Chile, which gives birth through the mouth of the male. The process is repeated in slow motion – another feature of the archive's ability to spy on Earth's wild creatures to an unprecedented extent.

Parasite Causing Deformities in Frogs
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-23-2009
"Once the parasitic crustaceans enter the gills of a tadpole victim, they feed off the tadpole's tissues until male and female parasites mate. The male dies soon after. Meanwhile the fertilized female bores her way partially out of the tadpole. The female worm's head and part of its body then morph into an anchor-like growth attached to the base of the tadpole's tail or to its legs. The parasite's egg sac is attached to this external growth, but part of the female parasite remains inside the tadpole's body and damages internal tissues. " There is more information at the source article.

"The villagers first encountered westerners in the 1950s but were still cut off from television and the cash economy; elders could recall a childhood of stone tools and the arrival of the first metal axe in the village. With the help of a translator (the local language, Kasua, is spoken by fewer than 1,000 people),"

Major pre-Columbian sites found in Puerto Rico
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-12-2009
more (at source): The plaza may contain other artifacts dating from 600 A.D. to 1500 A.D., including piles of refuse from daily life, Rivera said. "I have visited many sites and have never seen a plaza of that magnitude and of those dimensions and with such elaborate petroglyphs," said Miguel Rodriguez, member of the government's archaeological council and director of a graduate school in Puerto Rico that specializes in history and humanities. He is not involved in the excavation project. Archeologists have known since 1985 that the area contained indigenous artifacts. But their extent and significance only became clear this month when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work on removing them so the land could be used for a dam project.

Well, I have only moved one suburb closer to the inner city where I live and whilst it is quieter in one way, it is noisier in another. It is denser living than where I was previously. I have noticed my sleep being disturbed more often. I have started resorting to listening to ambient music at loud volume to drown out the distractions - using headphones of course. So is it any wonder these frogs are experiencing difficulties???
