My Frog Friends
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  6-15-2009    2
I love frogs and since moving to this current dwelling space I have utterly chuffed by my frog friends that regularly visit or are drawn by the outdoor light. This is "George" he is the biggest, then there is a middle sized one I have not yet named and a smaller one again which I have not named. When the moon is high and I "feel like an insomniac" I go outside to look at the stars and the moon if it is bright, sometimes "George is on my chair" and we share it briefly before he hops off. I genuinely have a preference for wildlife in their "free state" not cultured, not cultivated, not behind bars, with ample habitat to allow them to thrive so that I can continue to enjoy their presence in my life. I love wildlife allowed to BE FREE - as they were born to be just like you and me.

Great Expectations
debbyski
by debbyski  6-14-2009    5
"I filled the pool several days ago. I have since been browbeaten by Keyes for letting the frog break down. I got no thanks to speak of when I fixed it. I have learned by sitting in the back yard that cats have different drinking styles. Some sip directly from the frog fountain, like Keyes. There is a fastidious gray and white visitor who paws the water for quite some time, cleaning away debris before he leans in to drink. There also a very big cat who perches perilously at the very edge of the ledge and will one day need to be fished out. All is well for the moment. My masters, the felines, will get their backs up when I drain the pool for winter. Until then, I will do my best to be of service and keep out of the way."

RIVER DOLPHINS
papananook
by papananook  5-30-2009
River dolphins have no predators, except for humans. In December 2006 the Yangtze river dolphin, called the baiji, succumbed to pollution, propeller blades, dams, and overfishing; it became the first cetacean to be declared "functionally" extinct—meaning the species cannot renew itself, even if a specimen or two still exist. "Losing the baiji is like taking a chain saw to the cetacean tree of life," says Hamilton. "We've lost 20 million years of independent evolution." The Ganges river dolphin is also in grave danger; only a few thousand remain, and they live in some of the most polluted rivers on Earth.
