POPSWhat Obama Might Look Like If He Read Polls And Michael Barone's Column
He had already realized that his sentiments were leading him away from the Whigs and toward the new Republican party, and in 1856 he became a Republican. He quickly came to the fore in the party as a moderate opponent of slavery who could win both the abolitionists and the conservative free-staters, and at the Republican national convention of 1856 he was prominent as a possible vice presidential candidate. Two years later he was nominated by the Republican party to oppose Douglas in the Illinois senatorial race. Accepting the nomination (in a speech delivered at Springfield on June 16), Lincoln gave a ringing declaration in support of the Union: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The campaign that followed was impressive. Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of debates (seven were held), in which he delivered masterful addresses for the Union and for the democratic idea. He was not an abolitionist, but he regarded slavery as an injustice and an evil .....

POPS Inconvenient Goof The embarrassing error cast another shadow over the conference after the controversy over the hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, which appeared to suggest that scientists had manipulated data to strengthen their argument that human activities were causing global warming. For Gaia’s sake, he’s not a scientist, he’s an alarmist! Didn’t the Norwegian Nobel Committee make that clear? He can’t be expected to stick to facty stuff. Too much depends on it. POPSSo Bad even the New York Times takes notice! The rector of the University of Athens, Christos Kittas, was sent to intensive care Sunday, after being beaten by assailants using iron bars and then thrown out of his office Mr. Kittas, who was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday after recovering from a heart attack, called on fellow academics and politicians to tackle the problem on campuses. He said he "felt dead inside watching young people who could be my grandchildren or students commit crimes and vandalize the shrine to free thought." Last week, a professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Gerasimos Sapountzoglou, was targeted by extremists who beat and throttled him when he refused to stop a lecture. Several other academics have suffered similar attacks in Athens and Thessaloniki in recent months.

POPSAl Gore busted on World Stage "It’s unclear to me how this figure was arrived at,” Dr Maslowski said. “I would never try to estimate likelihood at anything as exact as this.” Mr Gore’s office later admitted that the 75 per cent figure was one used by Dr Maslowksi as a “ballpark figure” several years ago in a conversation with Mr Gore. The embarrassing error cast another shadow over the conference after the controversy over the hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, which appeared to suggest that scientists had manipulated data to strengthen their argument that human activities were causing global warming."

POPSParting Ways With The Right Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, etc.) Hatred for President Obama that goes far beyond simply criticizing his policies, into racism, hate speech, and bizarre conspiracy theories (see: witch doctor pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin, Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every other right wing source) And much, much more. The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff. I won’t be going over the cliff with them.

POPSTop Communist Sam Webb on the Healthcare Struggle Employee Free Choice, climate change legislation, immigration reform, and other key battles. Some left and progressive people dismiss this danger, but politics is not only about passing laws, as important as that is " it is also about gaining and maintaining the initiative, building on victories no matter how small, and expanding the breadth and depth of the coalition at every opportunity. It’s higher math, not elementary addition and subtraction. The health care reform fight is not over, of course, since the Senate has yet to act and the balance of power is less favorable there. Still, the House vote gives fresh impetus to the broader movement to bring its weight to bear on Senate deliberations and then on to the reconciliation process where the bill can be improved, including through deletion of toxic elements like the Stupak amendment that would curtail access to abortions.

POPSLies and truth about equality for gays I thought this was a great juxtaposition. One religious (Jewish) bigot declaring that equality for homosexuals is deeply offensive and could destroy religious freedom and free speech... Seriously distorted world-view. The other view, also of a (Reform) Jew, is in favor of egalitarian principles, like ensuring equality and fairness for all.

POPSWhat is Freedom of Press and Speech Worth? More than 80 journalists have been killed this year - it was 30 in the Philippines in one incident. Cowards, wannabe dictators, and people who want to run your life fear, persecute and kill journalists. The unfunny thing is that some "news" organizations seem to delight at inflaming people against the "media" and those who defend free speech and press. Of course they do the same with inflaming people against anyone they don't like and refuse to take responsibility when someone dies. Words and speech have power, they know it. this article demonstrates that truth.

POPSHow To Control Life; Control Carbon
Former EU Environment Minister Margot Wallstrom said, "Kyoto is about the economy, about leveling the playing field for big businesses worldwide." Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper once dismissed U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol as a "socialist scheme." (http://bit.ly/81iMvl) In addition, calls for a global carbon tax have been urged at recent U.N. global warming conferences . In December 2007, the U.N. climate conference in Bali urged the adoption of a global carbon tax that would represent "a global burden sharing system, fair, with solidarity, and legally binding to all nations." (http://bit.ly/5fNMQ5) "A climate change response must have at its heart a redistribution of wealth and resources," said Emma Brindal, a climate justice campaigner coordinator for Friends of the Earth. The Obama administration revealed even more controls in September 2009 when it was announced that the State Department wanted to form a global "Ecological Board of Directors." (http://bit.ly/8hbI4D)

POPSA ray of hope in Britain: Lord Pearson now head of the UKIP wow, believe it or not I met this guy as well! He was one of the main speakers at the Legal Conference of Free Speech and Religion in Washington DC in October. I cannot be anything but amazed at how many of the attendees at that event have been front and center in the news of late. Very encouraging :)

POPS"Teabagger" The term Teabagger is not very PC. Then again it would appear that most people have become less concerned with civility, and more concerned with the egocentric need to discover new terms with which to degrade and dehumanize one another. Sad that they have politicized what was once just common civility, even referring to it as POLITICAL correctness, to a point that now there is an anti-civility movement growing by adults who prefer to maintain the ignorant childishness of name-calling and incivility by invoking that it is merely exercising free speech. Of course free speech entitles us to say whatever we want, even when it is hateful, but treating others, even those with whom you disagree, with human dignity does not take away free speech, nor should this somehow be equated with communism or naziism unless one also would liken the Bible to communist doctrine. Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you... one of many verses. Be civil people.
