caffeine in the diet
tabsey
by tabsey  10-4-2008
The caffeine content of coffee depends on the type of coffee bean. Beans from the plant species robusta generally have more caffeine than those from the arabica species. Arabica beans generally produce a more full-bodied flavor. These beans are the ones likely to be found in gourmet coffee shops. The roasting and brewing of coffee also play a part. Contrary to popular belief, darker roasted beans actually have less caffeine. The heat literally roasts out the caffeine.

gado gado - Indonesian steamed vegetable salad with peanut sauce
Lexica
by Lexica  9-15-2008    1
Sudar hopes to open his own Indonesian restaurant some day. Indonesia is made up of more than 17,000 islands, each with its distinctive flavor profile. Sumatra is spicy; Java is sweet. He believes the complexity of the cuisine has yet to be fully explored in this country. "I think the cuisine has a lot of potential here," Sudar says with a smile. "There are no famous Indonesian chefs here yet. I'd like to be the first one."

Mexican regional varieties of tamales
Lexica
by Lexica  9-4-2008    2
Also Chiapas (countless varieties using different herbs, beans, chicharrón (crispy, fried pork rind) and even flower buds), Tabasco (one of Mexico's biggest cattle producers and grows sugar cane, cacao, coffee, corn, rice, peppers, bananas, coconuts, pineapple, watermelon and a variety of exotic fruit. All these, in addition to Maya herbs and spices more often associated with the Yucatán, flavor Tabasco's tamales, which are usually filled with pork, pejelagarto (large freshwater gar), chicken or even iguana), Veracruz (most famous for its fantastically large zacahuil tamale, which can be made up to 12 feet long for festive occasions and contain whole chickens, fish, turkeys, roasts or game, along with chiles, garlic and tomatoes, all wrapped in banana leaves and slow-roasted in a mud-brick and earth pit), and Yucatán (pork and chicken fillings marinated in achiote (with orange and lemon juices) are wrapped with tomato, peppers, onion and toasted garlic in banana leaves, and cooked in a

Travel Advice: How to Make a First Class Sandwich
zizzy
by zizzy  4-8-2008    1
Fennel: The minute lettuce touches something oily, like mayonnaise, it wilts. Fresh, thinly sliced fennel makes for a terrific alternative--its crunch doesn't sag with time. Cucumbers work well too, but they can be watery, so make sure your bread is crusty. Paper: Wrap the sandwich in light, thin paper--the kind used in delis--and slice it in half. Then wrap it in wax or butcher paper, which will keep moisture inside. The outer layer can be used as a makeshift plate. A tasty alternative to consider whether or not an airline provides food service.

Guaranteed Easiest Way to Make Your Own Pickles
willhelm

"Now that your brine has cooled, pour it over the pickles until the jar is full. Screw on your lid (if you’re using a recycled spaghetti sauce jar) or your canning lid and ring (no need to pressure seal.) Now just stick these guys in the fridge for a minimum of 5 days for awesome pickle flavor! They’ll keep in the fridge for weeks (although they are usually gone within days.) "

Downward Spiral of Empire
abailart
by abailart  8-1-2008    4
<<<The human ego loves to be "right", and some people prefer to watch the world burn with great glee and vitriol. But this is not the time for ego my friends; ego is what got us here. We have been called "lunatics", and now we are being called wise women and men, but it isn't about labels. It's about moving into the next phases of collapse with sensitivity, compassion, and humility, realizing that when people take their own lives in the throes of their own private and our collective collapse, there but for the grace of Something Greater goes any of us. Perhaps if they had been willing to look at the truth, they might have been able to hang around a little longer-or not. Nevertheless, our work is to continue waking ourselves and others up, which may be easier than it was five years ago, and meet everyone with kindness and empathy. It was very painful, yet sometimes a little bit fun to be called a lunatic, but now, the lunatics rest their case>>>
