Torture is always wrong
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-3-2009    1
"That's right; sodomy. Forcible anal penetration. The documentation of this and other forms of sexual humiliation is too extensive to be denied or pawned off on a couple of redneck privates. And we know now that sexual humiliation techniques were among those discussed and approved by the National Security Principals Committee, a White House group including Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, George Tenet and John "History will not judge this kindly" Ashcroft. I don't want to come off as minimizing the horror of controlled drowning. It's just that there's something about anal rape that brings the torture issue into sharp focus. Just once, I'd like to hear one of these American Enterprise Institute psychos, the ones that always trot out to defend the neocons' freakish obsessions, have to defend shoving a flashlight up a guy's ass. I want to hear Frank Gaffney or Jonah Goldberg tell me why I shouldn't be fucking mortified that raping prisoners was considere

Onion Study: 74% Of Children Tenting Out In Yard Don't Make It Through The Night
Lexica
by Lexica  8-21-2009
More: "Children should know, however, that if they hear scratching on the side of their tent, it's probably just their older brother trying to scare them," Fredericks said. "And if the scratching suddenly stops, it's most likely because their parents have gone insane and crept up from behind with this really demonic look in their eyes and slit his throat." As dire as these findings may appear, Fredericks claimed there was one way for children camping outdoors to escape their fate. "If they are able to avoid being bitten by poisonous spiders crawling around inside their sleeping bag, can keep all their fingers and toes crossed long enough to ward off Sister Mary, and manage to run back home without the inbred family of cannibal people seeing them first, they may actually stand a chance," said Fredericks, an eerie smile forming on his lips…

 * Watch out for the CSI effect. There is no machine that we can drop an eyelash into and come up with the DNA profile, fingerprints and mugshot of the owner in 2 minutes. * When you see an emergency vehicle behind you with its lights and sirens on: pull to the RIGHT, and Stop. We are usually required to pass cars on the left.

WMD--Weapons of Mosquito Destruction
papananook
by papananook  3-18-2009
"You can say we are very lucky -- the right place at the right time," says astrophysicist Szabolcs Márka, a Columbia University specialist in black holes. He has a grant to develop a "mosquito flashlight" designed to knock out the bugs' eye-like sensors. Scientists around the world are testing ways of thwarting mosquitoes with microwaves, rancid odors, poisoned blood and other weapons that disrupt the sense of sight, smell and heat mosquitoes use to find their prey. There's work on genetically altering a bacterium to infect and kill a mosquito, and a project to build a malaria-free mosquito genetically enhanced to overtake the natural kind. There's also a researcher in Japan who thinks mosquitoes can be a force for good. He is working on transforming them into "flying syringes" that deliver vaccines with every bite.

The Do-Good Imperative
wildcat
by wildcat  7-14-2008    2
How about a windup flashlight crossed with a cell phone charger? It's low tech meets high tech with rugged, toylike charm. Or charcoal made from plant waste instead of wood, developed for Haiti by MIT's D-Lab? Talk about a greener way to barbecue. (The technology might also help save endangered African gorillas. A new study published in Science links organized crime rings cutting trees for charcoal in Congo with a spate of recent gorilla murders.)

Truth About The Media, Simply Stated
Jorjor
by Jorjor  9-14-2008    1
It does no good to argue whether "the media" (as if there is such a monolithic beast) is liberal, conservative, both or neither. What is certain is that they are, indeed, a hungry pack but not as co-operative one, yapping after every scrap lest another member of the swarm get a little extra and tearing at each other's throats rather than consider the public interest. Wolves have more dignity - they hunt co-operatively.

Dying to get back to this incredible place
zalisan
by zalisan  8-6-2008
I am in no way affiliated to Yelapa or Casa's de Isabel. I am very much in love with this space and it's people. Isabel, California native, has been a part of the Yelapa community for over 40 years. She is only one of the very few who have been privileged to visit with the indigenous Huichol Indians. This entire area is also known for the many celebrities that also have been entranced by the overwhelming beauty and serenity. For movie buffs check out remember "Night of the Iguana" with Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr? It was filmed not far from here: http://www.virtualvallarta.com/puertovallarta/puertovallarta/aboutpuertovallarta/picture-perfect-the-histo.shtml. Casa Isabel is located on "The Point," is quiet, and just a ten minute walk from the markets and restaurants in the village. The entire property overlooks a seasonal stream, with two waterfalls running through the canyon.
