POPSMovement To Create A New State Who would have thought that there were people left in Kaleefornia and NOregon who were wanting to work timber and fishing: Locals complain that federal and state regulators have hampered the fishing and timber industries to protect forestlands and endangered species such as sucker fish and the spotted owl. Jobs are so scarce that the median income in the area is only two-thirds that of the rest of the state. Most water from the rainy Shasta region is shipped south, with little economic benefit to the area. Even the California sales tax draws sneers.

POPSNew "currency" big in US prisons
Mackerel is hot in prisons in the U.S., but not so much anywhere else, says Mark Muntz, president of Global Source, which imports fillets of the oily, dark-fleshed fish from Asian canneries. Mr. Muntz says he's tried marketing mackerel to discount retailers. "We've even tried 99-cent stores," he says. "It never has done very well at all, regardless of the retailer, but it's very popular in the prisons." Mr. Muntz says he sold more than $1 million of mackerel for federal prison commissaries last year. It accounted for about half his commissary sales, he says, outstripping the canned tuna, crab, chicken and oysters he offers. Unlike those more expensive delicacies, former prisoners say, the mack is a good stand-in for the greenback because each can (or pouch) costs about $1 and few -- other than weight-lifters craving protein -- want to eat it. So inmates stash macks in lockers provided by the prison and use them to buy goods, including illicit ones such as stolen food and home-br

POPSDead Zone in Global Oceans Growing About ten years ago, researchers found that there was a 70 mile dead zone where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico south of New Orleans. At the same time, they found that the delta that helped protect New Orleans from a Katrina level hurricane was also dying. The Mississippi drains 2/3s of the fresh water in the USA. Think about it and vote for someone who can say more than "Drill, Baby Drill and Drill Now!"

POPSFederal sweep targeting illegal immigrants snares 1,150 statewide This reminds me of the failed US war against drugs. Arrest lots of folks at the street level, get on the 6 o'clock news, and leave the big fish profiting from exploiting economic immigrants free to go on fishing for greed driven profits. In the drug war brown and black young men in jail by hordes and money men go their merry way - Shades of the $700 billion bailout!
