Who is a Jew? And who gets to decide?

First of all it must be the sign of bad taste to simply underscore somebody's religion, ethnicity, race, political believes, color of eyes or skin or hair, sexual preferences or affiliations with any social group. Hence make the life determining decisions on it. Any person is innocent unless convicted by Court of Law. And in any case deserve respectful approach. One can imagine how stressful and damaging this situation can be for teenager... :(

A History Lesson
debbyski
by debbyski  12-30-2008    4
"Last month the Chicago Board of Education dropped plans to open the city's first public high school for gay and lesbian students after Mayor Richard M. Daley questioned whether it would isolate children. But Hannah Devane, 17, a student at Harvey Milk, said mainstream schools failed her. She felt alienated and became so depressed, Devane said, she didn't get out of bed in the mornings. She stopped attending classes. When Devane was 13, she heard about the Harvey Milk school in the news and decided to ask her counselor to help her transfer. "Coming here changed my life," she said. "Now, I'm an A student."

Dorothea Lange - Artist With Vision Beyond The Lens Of Any Camera (Errata Clog)
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  10-12-2009    4
In response to my clog post entitled, "Strong Support For Health Care Reform With Public Option," I have participated in some discussions about the stunning work of Dorothea Lange. As many of you may know, Dorothea Lange is the photographer/artist who took the famous picture, "Migrant Mother," which is featured in my clog. I entitled this picture incorrectly as "The Dust Bowl," so please accept my apologies for this error. If any of my clogs ever contain incorrect information of this nature, I ask that my readers let me know right away. Aside from correcting errata, I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight Dorothea Lange's work further in the clips below. I clipped these bits from the My Hero website. Dorothea Lange is an interesting individual who, in my opinion, captured the class struggles in this country better than any artist of her day with a medium that was not then fully realized. Dorothea Lange died on October 16, 1965. If you are not familiar with the life

VEE Day
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2009    1
in Alameda, California, we practiced duck-and-cover as well as earthquake drills. Nothing quaint or or historic about it then. Here’s Reagan speechwriter Anthony R. Dolan at the Wall Street Journal on the power of “Four Little Words” … you remember them: “Tear down that wall” … and the earth-shaking ideas they represented as well as the action that backed them. The popular myth is that the wall kind of toppled over by itself, with a little push from people power. That of course ignores not only the prior 44 years of Cold War … interspersed with several hot ones that cost us tens of thousands of American lives … it also ignores the massive military buildup of the 1980s, the encouragement of liberation movements behind the Iron Curtain, the tough engagement with old-school Soviet leaders and, not least, the cordial engagement with a Soviet leader who realized it was time to throw in the towel. An atmosphere was finally created in which people felt like they could

Zenyatta Simply Perfect in Classic
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2009    1
and she did so in front of a raucous crowd of 58,825 on Saturday at Santa Anita Park. And she did it in spectacular fashion in her first career start against males, taking her typical position at the back of the field under Racing Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and charging down the stretch with authority"her stride lengthening and becoming more powerful with every kick"to inhale the leaders and hit the finish line first, just as she did in each one of the previous 13 starts of her brilliant career. “There are tears coming to my eyes,” said trainer John Shirreffs, who won the Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) last year with Zenyatta and this year’s Ladies' Classic on Friday with Life Is Sweet, becoming the first trainer to achieve the rare double in the same season. “I can’t believe it. “She is a great, great filly. She is all heart. The way the crowd took to her was just amazing. They cheered for her; they clapped for her; they love her.

Why does our society hate children?
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
As a person without kids, I agree entirely about the need for patience. Kids are part of life, and adults should not default to being nasty to or about them. More: Several folks on this and other sites pointed out how much money they would pay for a child-free flight. You know what? I'd pay just as much for a child-friendly flight - where reasonably behaved kids can fly without fear of glares from miserable old ladies, put-off hipsters, and misanthropic businessmen… Indeed, when we took our son on his first cross-country flight, he had a bad time. He screamed, he was in pain from the air pressure, and generally wasn't a happy camper. People were okay, but I still remember That Guy. He came up to me and said, "I have two kids. I've been where you are. Hang in there, it'll get better." In my life, I love my wife, my child, my family, a handful of close friends, and That Guy. I hope he's finding money or falling in love or getting elected mayor somewhere right now.

Republicans Need to Dump the Neoconservatives
blueridge
by blueridge  11-3-2009    1
The republicans need a "tea party" within their own camp! The Bush and present GOP "conservatives" are pushing big government Statism as much as Democrats, with only a different slant. Wars for democracy are a key element of both parties now. There is an insidious philosophy underlying this acceptance of the "natural" growth of statism. Neoconservative columnist David Brooks wrote ... we need "a vigorous One Nation Conservatism ... by making the nation great, individuals are able to join their narrow concerns to a larger national project." Actually, it was originally the Democrats that used to believe in curtailing the powers of the Federal government. (This was after the Civil War where they were called Dixie-crats). Two Is Better Than One
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  11-2-2009    1
♫ I remember what you wore on the first day You came into my life and I thought "Hey, you know, this could be something" 'Cause everything you do and words you say You know that it all takes my breath away And now I'm left with nothing 'Cause maybe it's true That I can't live without you Maybe two is better than one There's so much time To figure out the rest of my life And you thought that it got me coming undone And I'm thinking two is better than one I remember every look upon your face The way you roll your eyes The way you taste You make it hard for breathing 'Cause when I close my eyes and drift away I think of you and everything's okay I'm finally now believing That maybe it's true That I can't live without you Maybe two is better than one There's so much time To figure out the rest of my life And you thought that it got me coming undone And I'm thinking two is better than one ♫
