abailart
by abailart  7-17-2008    4
Born and raised in London, Nick Brandt studied Film and Painting at St. Martins School of Art. He started photographing in December 2000 in East Africa, beginning the body of work that is his signature subject matter and style. He no longer directs, devoting himself full time to his fine art photography now. Brandt's first book of photographs, "On This Earth", was published in October 2005, by Chronicle Books, with forewords by Jane Goodall and Alice Sebold (author of "The Lovely Bones"). He has had numerous one-man exhibitions between 2004 and 2006, including London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Hamburg, Santa Fe, Sydney, Melbourne and San Francisco.

Fine Art and Advertising
haraya
by haraya  11-29-2006
What if Leonardo DaVinci worked for an ad agency? We would have Mona Lisa in advertisements for Head and Shoulders shampoo. Imagine the possibilities. That is your assignment. The rules for this contest are thus: Take a piece of fine art and turn it into an ad for a company of your choice. Humor is the main focus. Text MAY float on the image; other W1k Photoshop rules apply. As always, quality is a must. We will remove poor entries no matter how much we like you. You'll have 48 hours for this contest, so make your submission count. ---Worth 1000s Contest Guidelines More details on the entries (and other abominations) at the source page.

To believe or not to believe?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-13-2008
, contrasting disbelief and belief showed increased brain response in the left inferior frontal gyrus, the anterior insula and the dorsal anterior cingulate, all associated with responses to negative stimuli, pain perception and disgust. Finally, contrasting uncertainty with both belief and disbelief revealed elevated neural action in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region associated with conflict resolution. What do these results tell us? “Several psychological studies appear to support Spinoza’s conjecture that the mere comprehension of a statement entails the tacit acceptance of its being true, whereas disbelief requires a subsequent process of rejection”

Alberto Gonzales: Bush's Yes Man!
rpassman
by rpassman  5-19-2007
No wonder Bush stands so steadfastly behind his AG. The guy just can't say no to his boss. This intertwining of the political with the running of the Justice Department has gone on in other administrations, both Republican and Democrat. But I think it's being carried to a fine art by this president. They leave no stone unturned to politicize where they think the law will permit it. And they push the line very far. The Bush administration, under the political influence of Karl Rove (the man who understands ethical behavior much in the same way that Chuck Colson, special counsel to Richard Nixon during the Watergate years, did; If you must run over your grandmother to get what you want, then go ahead and leave her for dead) will stoop to any depths to get what it wants.
