Jesus was a Community Organizer, Pilate was a Governor
dulios
by dulios  9-4-2008    10
Thank you to my friend Daniel, who has done community organizing from Harlem to LA to Boston. Thank you to Biko Baker of League of Young Voters, who I once interviewed and was immediately impressed by. Thank you to Saul Alinsky, largely considered the father of community organizing (pictured above). Thank you to all of you I don't know, who every day, make the choice to listen to ordinary people's stories and help them link these stories into a template for honest-to-goodness social change. And, yes, thank you to Barack Obama, for making the choice to be a community organizer so many years ago and for continuing to be proud and loud about the importance of the role of the community organizer for our nation's well-being.

It's so very sad that this even needs to be said. That women need to be shown that it's okay to demand to not be treated like prey.

Has Governor Palin Shifted The Feminist Model?
merrie
by merrie  9-16-2008
She introduced her children, especially little Trig, the one with Down's syndrome. She was displaying a mother's unconditional love, as opposed to the conditional love that insists on a "wanted" child. She did these things unapologetically, quite unafraid of seeming to be a normal, healthy sexist female: one who knows what it is to be a woman and enjoys it. The early feminists were radicals inspired by Simone de Beauvoir, who thought it necessary to show that all sex differences were bourgeois conventions or stereotypes. Simone de Beauvoir had her guy in Jean-Paul Sartre, a high-strung couple if ever there was one. Somehow the Palins make a better model for American women--for all women. In truth some sort of feminism was necessary, but the one we had needs a major correction. Harvey Mansfield is professor of government at Harvard and a member of the Hoover Institution's Taskforce on Virtue and Liberty. He is the author, most recently, of Manliness.

Instant Hate
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  9-11-2008    6
The simple fact of her being a pro-life married mother of five with a thriving political career was--before anything else about her was known--enough for the left and its outliers to target her for destruction. She could not be allowed to contradict symbolically one of the central narratives of the left. How galling it will be to Sarah Palin's many new enemies if she survives this assault and prevails. If she does, her success may be an important moment in the struggle to shape not just America's politics but its culture.

He understood the implications of Obama's passing over Hillary--not that Clinton voters would vote for McCain-Palin (though if even a few do so, it could make a difference), but that his pick of Palin when compared with Obama's shying away from Hillary would show McCain as a bolder and more confident leader. And he had the sense that Palin's anti-establishment conservatism, pro-family feminism, and tough-minded reformism would add something important to his campaign.

Wrong Woman; Wrong Message
debbyski
by debbyski  9-4-2008    19
Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

Mark Morford on the GOP, Palin
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2008
More of this great column: To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks." But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.

I'm glad that Obama realizes that more and more of us are seeing through them to their true nature... Or is he calling all American women communists? Certainly the democrat voting woman of today wants a sugar daddy to take care of her (government nanny statism), but we independent women prefer to provide for ourselves and support one another. Feminism in the democrat party is a zombie of its former self...

Let me know if you know better Laugh : I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson I squeeze the clutch And leave the ground I'll go to heaven, But in a train to hell. I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson And if I die tomorrow It was my destiny I wish much less for life Than my terrible engine's I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson When I feel the way The juddering of my machine, I climbed desires In my guts I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I go to more than one hundred, And I'm filled with fire and blood, Let me die The wind in my hair Let me die The wind in my hair And that would explain the crazy hair tossing...

"All 12 Clinton supporters on the committee supported the penalties." Clinton strategist Harold Ickes: "This committee feels very strongly that the rules ought to be enforced." "The threat that these rules posed to our fundamental beliefs was discovered only ex post facto -- the facto in question being Clinton's current need to seat the delegations whose seatings she had opposed when she thought she'd cruise to the nomination."

Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-5-2008    2
From being a cult figure of the early feminist movement, Anais later rose to international prominence with her writing. She is best known for her diaries but also produced a number of novels and a prose poem in surrealistic style as well as wonderful erotic short stories, published posthumously. Characterized by the use of powerful and, at times, disquieting imagery, her work reveals great sensitivity and perception. In 1973 she received an honorary doctorate from Philadelphia College of Art. She was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1974.<<
