We Still Have To Be Afraid, Heck of A Job, Barry
merrie
by merrie  12-30-2009    5
Even before a Nigerian with Al Qaeda links tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet headed to Detroit, travelers could see we had made no progress toward a technologically wondrous Philip K. Dick universe. We seemed to still be behind the curve and reactive, patting down grannies and 5-year-olds, confiscating snow globes and lip glosses. Instead of modernity, we have airports where security is so retro that taking away pillows and blankies and bathroom breaks counts as a great leap forward. If we can’t catch a Nigerian with a powerful explosive powder in his oddly feminine-looking underpants and a syringe full of acid, a man whose own father had alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a traveler whose ticket was paid for in cash and who didn’t check bags, whose visa renewal had been denied by the British, who had studied Arabic in Al Qaeda sanctuary Yemen, whose name was on a counterterrorism watch list, who can we catch?

"As good a game as she talks, Gaga's real language is visual and, of course, musical. Discussing videos like the one for “Bad Romance,” which she says is about "how the entertainment industry can, in a metaphorical way, simulate human trafficking -- products being sold, the woman perceived as a commodity."

Forty-Eight Years Of Indoctrination
debbyski
by debbyski  6-10-2009    2
"Probably the last thing I ever expected to hear my daughter say was "I'm a lesbian." Marcie is tall, slim, very feminine-looking, with long, wavy blond hair. Makeup and clothes are important to her; she's had boyfriends since the day she was in third grade when she came home and announced that she was in love. She is anything but what I thought of as a "dyke." They had a right to their own lifestyle--just don't make me a witness to it. Maybe they weren't all "weirdos"--but just keep them out of my face. After a lifetime of learning that homosexuality was "perverted," "weird," "unnatural," "sick," against all that God or anyone else prescribed, was I too set in my beliefs, too brainwashed to ever--honestly, sincerely, to the core of my being--accept the concept? At 48 years of age, I was about to find out."

Obamacare and the Tampon Tax
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  10-16-2009    1
And, all the rest of the more expensive, higher-class medical devices used by both men and women -- such as pacemakers, ventilators, X-ray machines, powered wheelchairs and surgical needles -- will be taxed, too. Wanda Moebius, vice president of policy communications at the Advanced Medical Technology Association said, “There was an effort to protect consumers from a tax on a $6.95 box of tampons, but what about the patients who will pay taxes on devices in surgical situations? Health care reform is supposed to make it more affordable, not raising costs, through taxes on the end user.”

'Cahokia: Ancient America's Great City on the Mississippi'
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-5-2009
cont (more at source): And this drama was at the heart of a place we now call Cahokia, ancient America's one true city north of Mexico—as large in its day as London— and the political capital of a most unusual Indian nation. At that time all the stars and planets in the Northern Hemisphere's night sky were visible above Cahokia, situated in a broad expanse of Mississippi River bottomland just east of what is now St. Louis, Missouri. Cahokia's people looked to the Morning and Evening stars for guidance and— inspired by ideas from Mesoamerica, possibly brought back from Cahokian rulers' travels or priests' vision quests— incorporated them into a religion that would displace traditions across the American Midwest, South, and Plains.

David Beckham Admits He's A Hermaphrodite
foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-14-2009    7
In the more free-thinking US, where Beckham plays for LA Galaxy, rules are far more fluid, and it's common to see teams made up of men, women, children and animals taking the field of play. Beckham's wife, Victoria, is expected to make a statement about her own Hermaphroditic state next week. She doesn't like being left out of anything.

Women Are Sort Of More Tentative Than Men
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  9-7-2009    1
Men were tentative when writing about make-up or other stereotypically feminine topics, especially when they thought they were writing to a woman, he found. For example, one man, believing he was corresponding with a woman, wrote: "… maybe girls prefer the quality of products at Sephora over other major department stores? I don't know." Women were tentative when writing about changing flat tires and other stereotypically masculine topics, especially when they thought they were writing to a man. For example, one woman, believing she was giving instructions to a man, wrote: "I think they start out by raising the whole car, or maybe just the one tire with a tire jack?"

The terrible bargain we have regretfully struck: confronting casual misogyny
Lexica
by Lexica  8-14-2009    5
More: There are men who will read this post and think, huffily, dismissively, that a person of color could write a post very much like this one about white people, about me. That's absolutely right. So could a lesbian, a gay man, a bisexual, an asexual. So could a trans or intersex person (which hardly makes a comprehensive list). I'm okay with that. I don't feel hated. I feel mistrusted—and I understand it; I respect it. It means, for me, I must be vigilant, must make myself trustworthy. Every day. I hope those men will hear me when I say, again, I do not hate you. I mistrust you. You can tell yourselves that's a problem with me, some inherent flaw, some evidence that I am fucked up and broken and weird; you can choose to believe that the women in your lives are nothing like me. Or you can be vigilant, can make yourselves trustworthy. Every day. Just in case they're more like me than you think.

poem: "A Strong Woman" by Marge Piercy
Lexica
by Lexica  7-23-2009    4
More: A strong woman is a woman bleeding inside. A strong woman is a woman making herself strong every morning while her teeth loosen and her back throbs. Every baby, a tooth, midwives used to say, and now every battle a scar. A strong woman is a mass of scar tissue that aches when it rains and wounds that bleed when you bump them and memories that get up in the night and pace in boots to and fro. A strong woman is a woman who craves love like oxygen or she turns blue choking. A strong woman is a woman who loves strongly and weeps strongly and is strongly terrified and has strong needs. A strong woman is strong in words, in action, in connection, in feeling; she is not strong as a stone but as a wolf suckling her young. Strength is not in her, but she enacts it as the wind fills a sail. What comforts her is others loving her equally for the strength and for the weakness from which it issues, lightning from a cloud. This is what little girls looked like when I was a kid
Lexica
by Lexica  7-20-2009    5
No pink. No sparkles. No fake high heels – or worse, real high heels. Just a kid, wearing clothes a kid can play in, playing with a toy for kids. Damn, I honestly never thought I'd feel nostalgic for 1981, but you look around at the pink-pink-pink-pretty-princess image that's shoved down girls' throats these days, and suddenly the 1970s standard kids' outfit (t-shirt, Tuffskins jeans, and Keds or other plain, practical sneakers) looks wonderful.

Gender And Society
debbyski
by debbyski  7-13-2009    7
I'd like to talk about gender identity in my personal life. As I grew into adolescence and my girlfriends talked about boys, I felt bored, but I wanted to date to be like the others. An other than heterosexual identity never occurred to me. So I got married and it was a good marriage; I had two beautiful daughters and I genuinely liked men. What kept me from being aware of my sexual orientation before things became so complicated? I think it is because heterosexuality is the only normative relationship in our society, and I was led to believe I was heterosexual when I wasn't. Girls are often discouraged from speaking their own truths so often that they tend to deny or ignore them or set them aside. I often felt like I was playing a role as a feminine creature while putting on lipstick and talking about boys to my friends. I thought this is what a woman is supposed to do. Sometimes I feel anger at society for being herded in that direction.
