Why no one listens
gemfemfox
by gemfemfox  1-30-2009    10
To bad news. This article contains an interesting chart showing how the "experts" were 90% bullish on the economy in November 2007, a mere 90 days before the bottom started falling out. And we continue to listen to those people. Makes me feel we deserve the world of hurt that is going to rain down on us. I just don't want to live through it, but I am preparing-as best I can.

Wish You Were Beer
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-18-2009    12
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, it is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver. I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. Remember: "I" before "E," except in Budweiser. I drink only to make my friends seem interesting. Everybody should believe in something; I believe I'll have another drink. Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic

We Need To Do Better For Our Military
sahara
by sahara  11-10-2009
Much of the study focused on 4th Brigade, home unit to most of the violent crime suspects. 4th Brigade was compared head-to-head with 3rd Brigade, which recently returned from Iraq. The 4th Brigade, now in Afghanistan, has suffered a higher casualty rate than other units its size in two deployments, the Army found, losing lives at a rate more than eight times that of 3rd Brigade. Along with the deaths came intense combat that took a mental toll on troops, the Army found. Soldiers in 4th Brigade were more likely than other soldiers to suffer mental illness. The study also found, though, that soldiers feel their careers can be damaged by seeking mental health help and too often feel that enlisted leaders don't support troops with mental illness. The Berlin Wall's Fall [MUSIC VID - TAYLOR SWIFT]
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  11-9-2009
♫ And it's a sad picture, the final blow hits you Somebody else gets what you wanted again You know it's all the same, another time and place Repeating history and you?re getting sick of it But I believe in whatever you do And I'll do anything to see it through Because these things will change, can you feel it now? These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down It's a revolution, the time will come for us to finally win We'll sing hallelujah! We'll sing hallelujah! Oh So we've been outnumbered, raided and now cornered It's hard to fight when the fight ain't fair We're getting stronger now from things they never found They might be bigger but we're faster and never scared You can walk away and say we don't need this But there's something in your eyes says we can beat this 'Cause these things will change, can you feel it now? These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down It's a revolution, the time will come for us to finally win

Tea Party Movement's New Target :The GOP

They feel they were had by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), who urged them to stomach earmarks for the good of the party; by George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove, who urged them to stomach a massive expansion of education and Medicare for the good of the party; and by the rest of the Washington gang that collaborated in the largest expansion of government in their lifetime for the good of the party. Erick Erickson, founder and editor of the conservative RedState blog, said grass-roots activists are done listening. “Republicans are going to have to come our way,” he said, before going on to trash NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele for backing Scozzafava. Their “level of disingenuousness ... is disgusting,” Erickson said. His influential blog is now calling for Sessions to get the boot from the NRCC as a penalty for mishandling the race. Erickson’s bombast may seem overboard, but it captures the dep

It is believed that what we feel on the inside is reflected outwardly. Can we assume that it can also be the other way around. Does it mean that if we smile even when we feel down and out, we would feel better? The human brain is still a mystery and a lot is still needed to be discovered.

Flu Symptoms: What You Might Feel
merrie
by merrie  10-28-2009    1
... and just plain feeling sick. Swine flu may also cause vomiting and diarrhea. These flu symptoms usually last for 3 to 4 days, but cough and tiredness may linger for up to 2 weeks after the fever has gone away. Other family members or close contacts often have a similar illness. For in-depth information, see WebMD's Children and Flu. Children and Flu Some parents think the flu is a stomach bug. But while children may have nausea and/or vomiting with flu, the key influenza symptoms in children include a high fever, chills and shakes, body aches, and a dry hacking cough. http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/flu-guide/children-and-flu-influenza

Slasher Politics
merrie
by merrie  10-25-2009
Per Jigsaw’s instructions, turncoat Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) shepherds the insurance company nitwits to their demise. No reason why the ”Saw” franchise shouldn’t jump on the pop-culture Obama cheerleading train like everyone else in La-la with a little B-flick health-care advocacy. And with the loan officer thing, there’s something for everyone! One thing slasher fans may want to bear in mind, though. When your gaping, bloody saw wounds need to be stitched and stapled up, do you really want to wait in line for the lowest bidder? Boston Herald’s Tenley Woodman gives Saw VI a “D.” No, not for the feel-good politics embedded in the middle of a feel-bad extravaganza. … it is the depraved acts and gore that make these films objectionable. Hate to quibble, but I think that’s what makes them marketable.

California's old-growth redwoods: Tree therapy amid ancient coastal giants
Lexica
by Lexica  10-22-2009
More: The national spotlight is being cast on the park again this month with the Redwood Empire featured in National Geographic magazine. The centerpiece is a fold-out photograph of one of the park's giants, the Iluvatar Tree, the world's third-largest coast redwood at 20 1/2 feet in diameter and 320 feet tall… Of the trails that provide access to old-growth in California, the James Irvine Loop is one of the best. This loop is a 7.5-mile round trip that provides a route past a succession of giants. It's easy enough that most anybody can simply walk a half mile and back to get a feel for an ancient forest. It's long enough that the entire loop delivers a sense of discovery and awe with each grove, and the good, clean feeling that comes with hiking a few hours in a pristine landscape. This trip can change how you feel about things for a long time. Big trees can do that.

Economy fallout: Younger workers less secure, less engaged
Lexica
by Lexica  10-20-2009
More: The key findings: * Employee engagement is down because of the economy; this decrease is most drastic in younger age groups. Additionally, those who do not feel secure in their job experienced a greater decline in engagement after the economic downturn. * Employees report decreased supervisor support. * Employees feel increasingly overloaded with work and feel they are assuming the workload of those who have either left the organization or are less productive because of decreased engagement. * Employees feel less included but also feel teams are less effective after the economic downturn; age played a factor in this analysis. * Perception of job quality decreased likely because of a "command and control" approach many organizations adopt (intentionally or not) during times of economic crisis.

Self-loathing
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  10-17-2009    1
FTA: Here is a trick: Recognize that there are different ways to look at things. Realize that you tend to bump into elephants from the same perspective, characterologically, but that you can change perspective and see things in a different way, just as "real." Understand that you can change your perspective and therefor your reality and that from some perspectives you are more likely to be happy and safe than from others. Resolve that you are going to practice trying to look at things in a variety of ways and pick your reality.
