POPSFrom Empire to Democracy
(c0nt.)There is a much better solution to the current financial crisis. But it requires discarding what has been conventional "wisdom" for too long: that government intervention in the economy ("big government") must be avoided like the plague, because the "free market" will guide the economy towards growth and justice. Let's face a historical truth: we have never had a "free market", we have always had government intervention in the economy, and indeed that intervention has been welcomed by the captains of finance and industry. They had no quarrel with "big government" when it served their needs. It started way back, when the founding fathers met in Philadelphia in 1787 to draft the constitution. The first big bail-out was the decision of the new government to redeem for full value the almost worthless bonds held by speculators. And this role of big government, supporting the interests of the business classes, continued all through the nation's history. The rationale for taki

POPSWhat exactly is democracy? The right would have us believe that democracy equates to freedom....but freedom to do what - starve, wage wars...or simply to consume, be silent and die as the saying goes.

POPSWe were warned Despite these warnings, Woodrow Wilson signed the 1913 Federal Reserve Act. A few years later he wrote: I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men. -Woodrow Wilson

POPSWho are Blue Star Families for Obama? We are teachers and lawyers, homemakers and small business owners. We coach soccer and volunteer in our children's schools. And at the end of the day, there is often an empty seat at our kitchen table because our loved ones are serving far from home. We are teachers and lawyers, homemakers and small business owners. We coach soccer and volunteer in our children's schools. And at the end of the day, there is often an empty seat at our kitchen table because our loved ones are serving far from home. We represent all branches of the armed services. We come from small towns, and the big city lights. We are wives, husbands, mothers and fathers. We are daughters, sons, and the entire extended family that gives support during deployments. Our backgrounds may be diverse, but we are united in the cause of service to our country. We are the Military Family.

POPSThe Demise of Meritocracy & The Push to Mediocrity "In America these days, we award everyone for merit, from the brilliant to the mediocre. Just as in Little League, everyone gets a trophy. It's the ultimate in populist democratization. Which is why McCain insists, despite all empirical evidence to the contrary, that Sarah Palin 'knows more about energy than probably anybody in the United States of America.' "

POPSWag the Pit Bull Avoid the hard questions, confuse and confound the enemy, and always change the discussion and the topic. The Rovian leaders within the McCain camp know how bad the future is, and this bowing to the ultra-religious-dominionist Cabal is a brilliant, timely, calculated move. On one hand, it throws those insane nuts a handful of crumbs. When she is replaced, (and rest assured, she will be), they will have been pacified. On the other hand, if she somehow manages to survive what is looking more and more like a serious vetting by serious investigators, she pretty much locks up the fundie vote for McCain. Despite being a Creationist nutcase herself. Place your bets: http://www.intrade.net/ I personally place the odds are against her being replaced, maybe she will, i have my doubts, however I do think there are stronger odds that Biden will be, by Hillary. I may be wrong, just my personal bet.

POPSDay Care's New Frontier: Bring Baby to Work For it or against? It is a compelling argument on both sides, however the cost of daycare for infants is huge, in MA it was at $300/wk. and up. Perhaps with more women in leadership roles, this situation can be a priority.

POPSWhite Privilege White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested." White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous

POPSObama: "That's what we're protecting!" Writer says: "This is what first drew me to Obama: his ability to speak fearlessly and unapologetically on behalf of truth and of the principles that make this country a place worth living in."

POPSObama to Palin: 'Don't Mock the Constitution' "We don't always catch the right person," he said. "We may think it's Mohammed the terrorist, but it might be Mohammed the cab driver. You might think it's Barack the bomb-thrower, but it might be Barack the guy running for president."

POPSUS Military Deaths, Just a Number Only, declined, the casualties first suffered, since, the latest, at least 4,153, since....2003 These words used in the article seem to detach themselves from the fact that "our " brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, husbands, and friends are being killed in a war with Iraq. It makes me think that people may be viewing this as just " war " and maybe compared to " the Vietnam War " and not as " the war on terrorism " or " the fight for freedom." Maybe " that " is why people protest this war, not against the soldiers that are led there, but " the Politics behind it ". I may be wrong and you may not care what I think, but I hope " I still have the freedom ", to say it.
