Too many calories send the brain off kilter
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-5-2008    1
The researchers report that that increased activity of the IKKß/NF-?B pathway can be divorced from obesity itself -- infusions of either glucose or fat into the brains of mice alone led to this inflammatory brain reaction. Further studies revealed that this activity in the brain leads to insulin and leptin resistance. Insulin lowers blood sugar by causing cells of the body to take it up from the bloodstream. Leptin is a fat hormone important for appetite control. Moreover, the researchers found that treatments preventing the activity of IKKß/NF-?B in the animals' brains protected them from obesity.

Almonds boost weight loss
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-20-2008
According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.”

Red wine's resveratrol may help battle obesity
Mohir
by Mohir  6-16-2008
In the cell-based study, they found that resveratrol inhibited the pre-fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells. Also, resveratrol hindered fat storage. Most interesting, according to Fischer-Posovszky, was that resveratrol reduced production of certain cytokines (interleukins 6 and 8), substances that may be linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as diabetes and clogged coronary arteries. Also, resveratrol stimulated formation of a protein known to decrease the risk of heart attack. Obesity decreases this substance, called adiponectin.

Why Having Big Buttocks Is Good for Your Health
Mohir
by Mohir  5-7-2008    3
Working on mice, the team transplanted fat from one location of the animals' body to the other. Subcutaneous fat removed to the abdomen triggered body weight and fat mass losses, and a decrease in blood sugar levels. The rodents also got more responsive to insulin, the hormone controlling the way in which the body metabolizes sugar. Insulin resistance triggers the type 2 diabetes. When visceral fat was placed to other body regions, it induced no effect.

Tell the FDA, "Don't mess with our chocolate!"
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  4-3-2007    3
This just opens the door for all the cheaper yummy chocolate to become cheaper crappy chocolate. Unless you want to pay Godiva prices for decent chocolate, take the time to tell the FDA not to change the requirements. Go to the source for info and how to help. Deadline for public comment is April 25, 2007.

Why do we gain weight? we eat more.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-4-2008    4
i know it sounds simplistic, but before linking obesity to viruses and other sophisticated theories, one should look straight to the facts, we eat more in quantities, more processed food. We are too reluctant to consciously restrict the availability that we face. a point to think about.

Making fat disappear; or how to augment?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  6-8-2009
"the study borrows strategies from synthetic biology, a field that has for the most part focused on engineering new functions into bacteria and other lower organisms. The study suggests that the same concepts could be applied to mammals: just as we create bacteria that produce biofuels, we could introduce new abilities into the bodies of humans and other animals." A new path in the road of augmenting the specification of a said specie.

Scientists find something good about a big bottom
Deepti
by Deepti  5-7-2008
Researchers have known for some time that fat that collects in the abdomen -- known as visceral fat -- can raise a person's risk of diabetes and heart disease, while people with pear-shaped bodies, with fat deposits in the buttocks and hips, are less prone to these disorders

Wall Street Fat Cats Are Trying to Pocket Billions in Bailout Cash
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-7-2008    1
"We're making homeowners take a big hit, and if there's any justification for any of these bonuses -- which is dubious -- sharing that burden is important." But that's not quite the sharing that Wall Street wanted from the bailout package. Yet, if "change has come to America," as per Obama's promise, then it's high time for Wall Street to shoulder its part -- starting with this bonus season. A decisive move by Obama on this topic would go a long way toward solidifying the central promise of his campaign.
